Book excerpt: This first of two volumes on the Alien and Sedition Laws, therefore, concentrates as exclusively as possible on the enactment and enforcement of the Federalist measures of 1798 and attempts to assess their influence in shaping the development of the political process of republicanism, with its dual goals of majority rule and individual rights. A second volume, on the Kentucky and Virginia Resolutions, will deal with the opposition to this repressive legislation, the issues which this opposition raised concerning fundamental rights, and the significance of the Resolutions as an exposition upon the nature of the American constitutional system. Together they will form an integrated investigation of the relationship between liberty and authority in a popular form of government, thus constituting a chapter in the evolution of the American civil liberties tradition. - Preface.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fetters of Freedom As everybody knows who is familiar with the making of my many books, but one out of the number I have written is without a preface. Like everybody addicted to the preface habit I have been accustomed to write the preface after everything else has been completed. This time I reverse the practice. Gentle reader, not one word of the story has as yet been put on paper! I am resolved to be honest in at least one book, and my preface shall be not only the thing that goes before, but the thing that is before; hence this beginning. When a man creates a certain number of subjects in the kingdom of his imagination, when he endows them with temper and temperament, when they are imbued with personality, which manifests itself in character and is set forth in characteristics, and finally when he sets them upon the stage of his world of romance, he cannot always be quite sure where they will go, what they will do, what they will say, and what will happen to them. It is harder sometimes to control the child of the imagi nation than it is to direct the real boy or girl. I have had much experience with both kinds of children and I speak with authority! Yet it is an imprudent parent that does not lay some plans for his offspring in the beginning, therefore I have certain designs for my people, young and old. Book The Fetters of Rhyme

Download or read book The Fetters of Rhyme written by Rebecca M. Rush and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2024-12-17 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How rhyme became entangled with debates about the nature of liberty in sixteenth- and seventeenth-century English poetry In his 1668 preface to Paradise Lost, John Milton rejected the use of rhyme, portraying himself as a revolutionary freeing English verse from “the troublesome and modern bondage of Riming.” Despite his claim to be a pioneer, Milton was not initiating a new line of thought—English poets had been debating about rhyme and its connections to liberty, freedom, and constraint since Queen Elizabeth’s reign. The Fetters of Rhyme traces this dynamic history of rhyme from the 1590s through the 1670s. Rebecca Rush uncovers the surprising associations early modern readers attached to rhyming forms like couplets and sonnets, and she shows how reading poetic form from a historical perspective yields fresh insights into verse’s complexities. Rush explores how early modern poets imagined rhyme as a band or fetter, comparing it to the bonds linking individuals to political, social, and religious communities. She considers how Edmund Spenser’s sonnet rhymes stood as emblems of voluntary confinement, how John Donne’s revival of the Chaucerian couplet signaled sexual and political radicalism, and how Ben Jonson’s verse charted a middle way between licentious Elizabethan couplet poets and slavish sonneteers. Rush then looks at why the royalist poets embraced the prerational charms of rhyme, and how Milton spent his career reckoning with rhyme’s allures. Examining a poetic feature that sits between sound and sense, liberty and measure, The Fetters of Rhyme elucidates early modern efforts to negotiate these forces in verse making and reading.
