Book Causation Freedom and Determinism

Download or read book Causation Freedom and Determinism written by Mortimer Taube and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-14 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, first published in 1936, divides into roughly two parts: a re-examination of historical material; and a positive theory of causation suggested by the results of this re-examination. The historical study discloses an ambiguity in the meanings of causation and determinism; it discloses also that this ambiguity is transferred to the meaning of freedom.

Book Natural Categories and Human Kinds

Download or read book Natural Categories and Human Kinds written by Muhammad Ali Khalidi and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2013-05-16 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The notion of 'natural kinds' has been central to contemporary discussions of metaphysics and philosophy of science. Although explicitly articulated by nineteenth-century philosophers like Mill, Whewell and Venn, it has a much older history dating back to Plato and Aristotle. In recent years, essentialism has been the dominant account of natural kinds among philosophers, but the essentialist view has encountered resistance, especially among naturalist metaphysicians and philosophers of science. Informed by detailed examination of classification in the natural and social sciences, this book argues against essentialism and for a naturalist account of natural kinds. By looking at case studies drawn from diverse scientific disciplines, from fluid mechanics to virology and polymer science to psychiatry, the author argues that natural kinds are nodes in causal networks. On the basis of this account, he maintains that there can be natural kinds in the social sciences as well as the natural sciences.

Book Free Will and God s Universal Causality

Download or read book Free Will and God s Universal Causality written by W. Matthews Grant and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2019-05-16 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The traditional doctrine of God's universal causality holds that God directly causes all entities distinct from himself, including all creaturely actions. But can our actions be free in the strong, libertarian sense if they are directly caused by God? W. Matthews Grant argues that free creaturely acts have dual sources, God and the free creaturely agent, and are ultimately up to both in a way that leaves all the standard conditions for libertarian freedom satisfied. Offering a comprehensive alternative to existing approaches for combining theism and libertarian freedom, he proposes new solutions for reconciling libertarian freedom with robust accounts of God's providence, grace, and predestination. He also addresses the problem of moral evil without the commonly employed Free Will Defense. Written for analytic philosophers and theologians, Grant's approach can be characterized as “neo-scholastic” as well as “analytic,” since many of the positions defended are inspired by, consonant with, and develop resources drawn from the scholastic tradition, especially Aquinas.

Book Free Will Causality and the Self

Download or read book Free Will Causality and the Self written by Atle Ottesen Søvik and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2016-09-12 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A major goal for compatibilists is to avoid the luck problem and to include all the facts from neuroscience and natural science in general which purportedly show that the brain works in a law-governed and causal way like any other part of nature. Libertarians, for their part, want to avoid the manipulation argument and demonstrate that very common and deep seated convictions about freedom and responsibility are true: it can really be fundamentally up to us as agents to determine that the future should be either A or B. This book presents a theory of free will which integrates the main motivations of compatibilists and libertarians, while at the same time avoiding their problems. The so-called event-causal libertarianism is the libertarian account closest to compatibilitsm, as it claims there is indeterminism in the mind of an agent. The charge of compatibilists, however, is that this position is impaired by the problem of luck. This book is unique in arguing that free will in a strong sense of the term does not require indeterminism in the brain, only indeterminism somewhere in the world which there plausibly is.

Book Scientific and Political Freedom in Islam

Download or read book Scientific and Political Freedom in Islam written by Uriya Shavit and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2017-02-24 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book critically explores the modernist-apologetic Islamic approach to the relation between revelation and science and politics which, for over a century, has been a central part of Arab discourses on the future of Muslim societies. The main thesis of the book is that the modernist-apologetic approach has great potential to be a force for liberalization, but also possesses inherent limitations that render its theory on the relation between revelation and freedom self-contradictory.

Download or read book Causality and Science written by NALINI KANTA BRAHMA and published by PHI Learning Pvt. Ltd.. This book was released on 2007-09-22 with total page 83 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Causality and Science may at first sound as abstract and, perhaps, as esoteric subjects. For, while one seems to touch on the transcendental and the metaphysical realm, the other seems to be rooted on terra firma. However, while reading through this compact and concise book, written with great clarity and precision, one comes to realize that there is no clash between these two, and indeed reconciliation between them is possible. The author, with his remarkable erudition and scholarship, contends that the whole conception of science is so much bound up with the causal concept that it seems hardly possible that science could ever be able to do without it. He argues that space, time and causality are the three categories on which science is built. The book also shows that of the four causesÑmaterial, formal, efficient, and final, how the material and efficient causes are given prominence. In this process, the book demonstrates the inadequacy of the empirical view of causation, and shows that material cause combines with the efficient and final causes, or how these coalesce into one and only the adequate cause remains. There is no antagonism between the noumenon and the phenomenon or the Brahma and the MŒyŒ. Even though relativity may reign supreme for many, the author says that there is no opposition between perfect spontaneity and freedom and law and system on the one hand, and causality and determinism on the other. Ultimately, a reconciliation between causality and freedom can be effected, and the Reality that there is neither ÔfreeÕ nor ÔunfreeÕ, but trans-cends both the qualities can emerge as the Absolute which can solve for ever all oppositions. The book would be of interest to students of philosophy and any reader who has a philosophical and scientific bend of mind to delve deeper into the relation between causality and science.
