This book was released on 2018-02-08 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Free Trade and Tariffs: A Speech Delivered on July 20, 1881, to the Penge and Anerley Liberal Association I will attempt to tabulate, as well as possible from the confused and conflicting expressions of these retro grade economists, some statements as to the objects they have in view, and their method of obtaining them. We are told, then, that the course they advocate is good for purposes of revenue; secondly, that it will protect and foster our industries; thirdly, that it is useful in coercing foreign nations into granting us more liberal terms, or to punish them if they exclude our trade; and, further, this policy is commended on the ground of its adoption by foreign nations, and the success which is said to attend its practice. Download or read book The Free Trade Policy of the Liberal Party written by James E. Thorold Rogers and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-03 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Free Trade Policy of the Liberal Party: A Speech Delivered at Pendleton, September 30, 1868 ON Wednesday evening, September 80th, 1868, at the Pendleton Club, Charlestown, Henry Rawson, Esq., in the chair, Professor J. E. Thorold rogers spoke as follows upon the free trade policy of the Liberal party. Mr. Chairman and Gentlemen, - There are, perhaps, several reasons Why at the plesent crisis the attention, not of you only, but also of all the electors throughout Great Britain and Ireland, should be called to that financial history which is implied in the heading to the address I purpose giving you this evening. My friend, Mr. Rawson, has alluded to the fact that the great battle of free trade - that is, the liberation of your bread from the tax of the monopolist - was achieved 22 years ago. As a consequence, a very large number of persons in this meeting must be unaware of how great and continuous were the struggles by which that victory was won. We are told in the sacred page that, after the great blessing of plenty, during a time of dearth, was secured by the Wisdom which the Divine inspiration bestowed upon the Patriarch Joseph, in the course of time another generation arose which knew not Joseph, and that the people thereupon fell under the power of the Egyptians. Gentlemen, you may apply this historical fact to your selves. If you lose sight of those who in times past, by their policy, vindicated to you a free market, both for your food and for your labour, you may be quite certain that the Egyptians will be down upon you again, and constrain you to make your bricks without straw. Book The ABC of Free Trade

Download or read book The ABC of Free Trade written by Edward North Buxton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-28 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The ABC of Free Trade: An Address, Delivered to the West Ham Liberal Association, March 6, 1882 A Historian of our own time wrote, three or four years ago, "There is no more chance of reaction against Free Trade in England than there is of a reaction against the rule of three." This proves again the wisdom of the advice, "Don't prophesy unless you know." A party, encouraged thereto by the rash and ignorant speeches of one of its leaders, and the weak vacillation of the other, driven to straits for want of a cry, has seized upon the opportunity given by the recent depression to revive the exploded fallacies of forty years back, in the hope of winning here and there a county seat. People are perhaps beginning to see through this move, but many even now have not had the time or inclination to familiarise themselves with the facts and the arguments which satisfied our forefathers, and it seems necessary again to furnish every elector with the reasons against a reaction which, if successful, would be full of misfortune for this country. It is not enough to be Free Traders by tradition; we must be Free Traders by conviction, and be able to give a reason for the faith that is in us. We cannot afford to rest on our oars in the matter. Book Roads Were Not Built for Cars

Download or read book Roads Were Not Built for Cars written by Carlton Reid and published by Island Press. This book was released on 2015-04-09 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Roads Were Not Built for Cars, Carlton Reid reveals the pivotal—and largely unrecognized—role that bicyclists played in the development of modern roadways. Reid introduces readers to cycling personalities, such as Henry Ford, and the cycling advocacy groups that influenced early road improvements, literally paving the way for the motor car. When the bicycle morphed from the vehicle of rich transport progressives in the 1890s to the “poor man’s transport” in the 1920s, some cyclists became ardent motorists and were all too happy to forget their cycling roots. But, Reid explains, many motor pioneers continued cycling, celebrating the shared links between transport modes that are now seen as worlds apart. In this engaging and meticulously researched book, Carlton Reid encourages us all to celebrate those links once again.
