Download or read book Free to Work written by James D. Schmidt and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 1998 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this intriguing and innovative work, James D. Schmidt examines federal efforts to establish "free labor" in the South during and after the Civil War by exploring labor law in the antebellum North and South and its role in the development of a capitalist labor market. Identifying the emergence of conservative, moderate, and liberal stances on state intervention in the labor market, Schmidt develops three important case studies--wartime Reconstruction in Louisiana, the Thirteenth Amendment, and the Freedmen's Bureau--to conclude that the reconstruction of free labor in the South failed in large part because of the underdeveloped and contradictory state of labor law. The same legal principles, Schmidt argues, triumphed in the postwar North to produce a capitalist market in labor.
Download or read book Beyond Free College written by Eileen L. Strempel and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2021-01-15 with total page 183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beyond Free College outlines an audacious national agenda—consistent with, but far more comprehensive than, the current “free college” movement—that builds on the best of US higher education’s populist history such as the G.I. Bill and the community college transfer function. The authors align a wide constellation of higher education trends—online learning, prior learning assessment, competency-based learning, high school college-credit— with a rapidly shifting student transfer environment that privileges college credit as the pivotal educational catalyst to boost access and completion. The book’s agenda seeks greater productive investment in postsecondary education by privileging a single metric—lower-cost-per-degree-granted—as the animating driver of a transfer pathway that will fulfill the potential of its historical, progressive innovators. Beyond Free College’s goal is as simple as it is urgent: To galvanize higher education advocates in an effort to reorganize, reorient, and reignite the transfer function to serve the needs of a neotraditional student population that now constitutes the majority of college-goers in America; and in ways that advance completion, not just access to higher education.
Download or read book Free Choice for Workers written by George C. Leef and published by Jameson Books (IL). This book was released on 2005 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a captivating chronicle of the fifty-year "David-Goliath" struggle between the bosses of Big Labor and Americans opposed to their coercive power.Few Americans realize their freedom to say "no" to compulsory unionism is largely the result of the valiant efforts of the National Right to Work Committee and its Legal Defense Foundation. Big business and the Republican Party have usually avoided the battle, leaving only Right to Work and its hundreds of thousands of grass roots supporters to defend employee freedom to get or keep their jobs without being forced to pay dues or join a union.Leef's narrative covers the New Deal legislation that gave Big Labor its initial monopoly power, and then the inspiring, decades-long struggle in Washington and the states to reduce the abusive power of labor bosses. The book also teaches a crucial lesson for those involved in public policy wars, regardless of their political philosophy -- that principled and dedicated idealists can prevail against strong special interest groups if they fight for a just cause.

Download or read book Free Spells that Work written by Dayanara Blue Star and published by Dayanara Blue Star. This book was released on 2015-03-28 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For hundreds of years, pagans and witches have used spell casting as a means of changing their lives and expressing their spirituality. Learning to cast spells is an artful meditation, a valuable way to get in touch with your true desires, gain personal insight and magnetize the wealth of positivity that flows through the Earth and the spiritual plane. Your altar and spell casting tools provide a physical medium for the energy and intention manifested from the deepest part of your soul. Intention affects all of your actions, on both conscious and subconscious levels. You are a link in the chain of energy that flows within everything that exists. Everyone has the ability to channel this energy and use it in pursuit of their goals and desires. While this energy is extremely powerful, you need not be an experienced mage to conjure positivity through spiritual practice. You can cast effective spells using even the simplest tools, because the power comes from within yourself. Spell casting isn’t the same as making a wish; it is planting the seeds of intention so that your desires may grow and flourish. Pagan tradition has long recognized that intuition, psychic energy, and motivation are elements of the mind that can be combined harmoniously and channeled together to achieve various goals. In mainstream circles, many people look toward the power of ‘affirmations’ to improve their life. While the language is different, it is quite similar to the methods Wiccans and other pagans have been using since the ancient times. By using spells, you’re creating a dialogue with the flow of energy from all realms of the Universe. You can think of the results as a response to your communication, and these results may surprise you. Cast your spells with an open heart and an honest mind, and be as honest with yourself as possible. The spells listed in this book can be altered to suit your specific needs and desires, and it is always best to go with your intuition---go with what ‘feels’ most true to you. Spells do not work if you yourself do not believe what you’re saying or doing, so make it meaningful. It is my pleasure to share my knowledge I’ve obtained through years of studying and practicing the craft. My spiritual journey is always evolving, and I cherish the ability to help others along with their journeys as well. The more you practice, the more in tune you will be with your own unique connection with the cosmic flow of energy that is the very pulse of Life. Use your creativity, keep an open mind, and the path toward whatever you are seeking will unfold before you, with new illuminations along the way. Love and light to all! Dayanara Blue Star

Download or read book More Work Or More Free Time written by Charles Siegel and published by Omo Press. This book was released on 2022-01-10 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Americans believe we need rapid economic growth to create jobs and avoid unemployment - but that is because we do not have the choice of working shorter hours. The Dutch have a better model. By law, they can choose to work part time, which means they avoid unemployment by creating the amount of work people actually want rather than by creating full-time jobs. We have reached the point where economic growth no longer brings significant benefits. International comparisons show that higher income no longer improves a nation’s happiness, health, or educational achievement significantly after it reaches about two-thirds of the current American level. And postwar America’s push to promote automobile use to stimulate the economy actually made our cities less livable. The average American employee works 25% more than the average Dutch employee, but the available measures of well-being show that all the extra work doesn’t do us any good. In the course of this century, most nations of the world could emerge from poverty and have a comfortable middle-class standard of living if we can avoid ecological crisis. But that is a big “if.” To create a sustainable economy with a high quality of life, it is essential for the world to follow the Dutch model of shorter work hours and slower growth rather than the postwar American model of long work hours and rapid growth. But no mainstream politician is talking about the crucial issue of work time.

Download or read book Raising Free People written by Akilah S. Richards and published by PM Press. This book was released on 2020-11-01 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No one is immune to the byproducts of compulsory schooling and standardized testing. And while reform may be a worthy cause for some, it is not enough for countless others still trying to navigate the tyranny of what schooling has always been. Raising Free People argues that we need to build and work within systems truly designed for any human to learn, grow, socialize, and thrive, regardless of age, ability, background, or access to money. Families and conscious organizations across the world are healing generations of school wounds by pivoting into self-directed, intentional community-building, and Raising Free People shows you exactly how unschooling can help facilitate this process. Individual experiences influence our approach to parenting and education, so we need more than the rules, tools, and “bad adult” guilt trips found in so many parenting and education books. We need to reach behind our behaviors to seek and find our triggers; to examine and interrupt the ways that social issues such as colonization still wreak havoc on our ability to trust ourselves, let alone children. Raising Free People explores examples of the transition from school or homeschooling to unschooling, how single parents and people facing financial challenges unschool successfully, and the ways unschooling allows us to address generational trauma and unlearn the habits we mindlessly pass on to children. In these detailed and unabashed stories and insights, Richards examines the ways that her relationships to blackness, decolonization, and healing work all combine to form relationships and enable community-healing strategies rooted in an unschooling practice. This is how millions of families center human connection, practice clear and honest communication, and raise children who do not grow up to feel that they narrowly survived their childhoods.
