Book Free Russia Classic Reprint

Download or read book Free Russia Classic Reprint written by William Hepworth Dixon and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-14 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Free Russia Svobodnaya Rossia - Free Russia-is a word on every lip in that great country; at once the Name and Hope of the new empire born of the Crimean war. In past times Russia was free, even as Germany and France were free. She fell before Asiatic hordes; and the Tartar system lasted, in spirit, if not in form, until the war; but since that conflict ended, the old Russia has been born again. This new country - hoping to be pacific, meaning to be Free - is what I have tried to paint. My journeys, just completed, carried me from the Polar Sea to the Ural Mountains, from the mouth of the Vistula to the Straits of Yeni Kale, including visits to the four holy shrines of Solovetsk, Pechersk, St. George, and Troitsa. My object being to paint the Living People, I have much to say about pilgrims, monks, and parish priests; about village justice, and patriarchal life; about beggars, tramps, and sectaries; about Kozaks, Kalmuks, and Kirghiz; about workmen's artels, burgher rights, and the division of land; about students' revolts and soldiers' grievances; in short, about the Human Forces which underlie and shape the external politics of our time. Two journeys made in previous years have helped me to judge the reforms which are opening out the Japan-like empire of Nicolas into the Free Russia of the reigning prince. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Free Russia, Vol. 3: The Organ of the English "Society of Friends of Russian Freedom"; November 1st, 1892 Of the many plans for raising funds the expedient of issuing paper money has found most favour with the present government; six issues have been ordered since last year. This is undoubtedly an easy way, but a dangerous one too, which cannot be resorted to ia definitely. With the 200, ooo, ooo roubles interest on foreign loans to be paid in gold, the depreciation of paper money falls heavily upon the exchequer of the state, as it does upon the general industry of the country. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When we think of our country, we feel proud of it for other and better reasons than its great size. We know how its extent compares with that of other nations; we know that the United States covers an area almost equal to that of Europe, and, more favored than that Grand Division, is situated on the two great highways of commerce, the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. Europe is as far from the latter, as Asia is from the former; and these highways, powerful means toward creating prosperity, remain at the same time barriers whereby nations that find greater delight in the arts of war than in those of peace, are restrained from disturbing our national progress. At the beginning of this twentieth century the nations upon which depends the world's peace or war, happiness or misfortune, are the United States, Great Britain, Germany, France, Austria-Hungary, Italy, Russia, Japan, and in the near future China. Here we see that Europe, although little larger in area than the United States, is represented by seven nations, Asia by two, and the Western Hemisphere by one which by its institutions stands for peace and progress, for law and order. Hence we, its citizens, are known all over the world as Americans.

Book My Disillusionment in Russia

Download or read book My Disillusionment in Russia written by Emma Goldman and published by Standard Ebooks. This book was released on 2022-01-05T03:31:26Z with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1919, at the height of the anti-leftist Palmer Raids conducted by the Wilson administration, the anarchist activist and writer Emma Goldman was deported to the nascent Soviet Union. Despite initial plans to fight the deportation order in court, Goldman eventually acquiesced in order to take part in the new revolutionary Russia herself. While initially supportive of the Bolsheviks, with some reservations, Goldman’s firsthand experiences with Bolshevik oppression and corruption prompted her titular disillusionment and eventual emigration to Germany. In My Disillusionment in Russia, Goldman records her travels throughout Russia as part of a revolutionary museum commission, and her interactions with a variety of political and literary figures like Vladimir Lenin, Maxim Gorky, John Reed, and Peter Kropotkin. Goldman concludes her account with a critique of the Bolshevik ideology in which she asserts that revolutionary change in institutions cannot take place without corresponding changes in values. My Disillusionment in Russia had a troubled publication history, since the first American printing in 1923 omitted the last twelve chapters of what was supposed to be a thirty-three chapter book. (Somehow, the last chapters failed to reach the publisher, who did not suspect the book to be incomplete.) The situation was remedied with the publication of the remaining chapters in 1924 as part of a volume titled My Further Disillusionment in Russia. This Standard Ebooks edition compiles both volumes into a single volume, following the intent of the original manuscript. This book is part of the Standard Ebooks project, which produces free public domain ebooks.

Book The Story of Russia Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Story of Russia Classic Reprint written by Robert van Bergen and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-10-01 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of Russia Other large rivers rise on the Valdai plateau. The Dnieper runs south, passing by Kief, and empties in the Black Sea, near Odessa. The Dwina runs northward, seeking the icy Arctic, which it enters by way of the \vhite Sea near Archangel. The Diina takes a westerlv course towards the Gulf of Riga where it empties near the city of that name. Of greater importance are the small streams which feed Lakes Ladoga and Onega, because they connect Central Russia with the Baltic Sea by means of the Neva. European Russia is usually divided into four zones or belts, from the character of the soil and the nature of its productions; their general direction is from south west to northeast. In the north, as a Screen against the Arctic blast, is the policssa or forest region, densely covered with lindens, birches, larches, and sycamores, with oaks on the southern fringe. These forests are invaluable to Russia where, in the absence of mountains, stone is scarce. The houses are built of wood, and fires are of common occurrence. Both lumber and fuel are supplied by these forests which originally extended to Novgorod, Moscow, and Jaroslaf. The increase in population together with the growing demand for lumber, have caused extensive clearings; but the area covered by the forests is so large, that the supply is well-nigh inexhaustible. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ukraine, Poland and Russia and the Right of the Free Disposition of the Peoples It would be a grave error to regard the struggle of the Poles and Russians against the Ukrainians as a result of the European war, or to seek the explanation of it in Bolshevism. The world war has only served to crystal lize the relations between the Russians, Ukrainians and Poles, and when Russian Bolshevism appeared on the scene the war between these nationalities had been in existence already for a long While. Book Russia of the Russians Classic Reprint

Download or read book Russia of the Russians Classic Reprint written by Harold Whitmore Williams and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-06 with total page 508 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Russia of the Russians The fundamental difference between Russian and English history is the difference between the great plain and the island. English history tells of the upbuilding by an island people of the greatest maritime empire in the world. Russian history tells how a people whose original home lay between the slopes of the Carpathians and the Dnieper gradually, with toil, pain and effort, secured possession of the greatest plain in the world and so created the broadest of land empires. There are curious analogies, striking points of resemblance in the process of empire-building in both countries. But the fundamental difference between the island and the plain, between a sea and a land empire makes itself constantly felt, and largely accounts for striking differences between the two nations in character, social structure and political development. The island constitutes a secure physical basis for national effort. It guarantees seclusion and privacy. It renders intercourse with the outside world dependent far less on the will of outsiders than on the islanders themselves. The island nation is largely protected against outside interference. It is in a much better position than continental nations to concentrate its energies on ques ions of internal development. Its social structure is compact and highly organised. Imperial expansion beyond the seas does not alter the essential characteristics of the structure, it only throws them into greater relief. In thinking of the British Empire one thinks primarily and mainly of England. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Young Folks History of Russia Classic Reprint

Download or read book Young Folks History of Russia Classic Reprint written by Nathan Haskell Dole and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-10 with total page 536 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Young Folks' History of Russia It has been well said by a recent author that the aim of all the great reforms made in Russia since Peter the Great has been to undo what he did or tried to do. That struggle is still going on, and with Such throes that it sometimes seems as though the building itself must fall in ruins. The history of modern Russia is the history of a transition, and must needs be unfinished until the transition is complete. The death of an emperor or the execution of an assassin is not the end of an epoch. In a book for young people a long list of authorities may be spared; it is sufficient to state that the facts have been drawn from the best sources, - Russian, German, French, and English. In the first part Russian names have been done away with English equivalents take their places. A table follows for convenience. In all cases difficult words are avoided so far as possible, and it is hoped that this Young Folks' History of Russia is at least readable.
