Book excerpt: Andy Lanning had a five-thousand dollar price on his head. In the span of a few hours, the quiet, young blacksmith had turned into the most hunted outlaw on the range. It all started when he was goaded into a fight with the town bully. Believing he'd killed his tormentor, he fled with a posse led by bloodthirsty Bill Dozier in hot pursuit. When Andy returned Dozier's fire, he not only killed Dozier but signed his own death warrant. Deputy marshal Hal Dozier would never let his brother's death go unavenged.

Book Free Range Lanning a Western Story Classic Reprint

Download or read book Free Range Lanning a Western Story Classic Reprint written by George Owen Baxter and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-29 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Free Range Lanning a Western Story Beside the rear window of the blacksmith shop Jasper Lanning held his withered arms folded against his chest. With the dispassionate eye and the aching heart of an artist he said to himself that his life work was a failure. That life work was the young fellow who swung the sledge at the forge, and truly it was a strange product for this seventy-year-old veteran with his slant Oriental eyes and his narrow beard of white. Andrew Lanning was not even his son, but it came about in this way that Andrew became the life work of Jasper. Fifteen years before the father of Andy died, and Jasper rode out of the mountain desert like a hawk dropping out of the pale-blue sky; for the clan spirit of the Lannings was as strong as the clan spirit of the Campbells and Stewarts in the old days. Jasper buried his brother without a tear, and then sat down and looked at the slender child who bore his name. Andy was a beautiful boy. He had the black hair and eyes, the well-made jaw, and the bone of the Lannings, and if his mouth was rather soft and girlish he laid the failing to the weakness of childhood. Jasper had no sympathy for tenderness in men. His own life was as littered with hard deeds as the side of a mountain with bowlders. But the black, bright eyes and the well-made jaw of little Andy laid hold on him, and he said to himself: "I'm fifty-five. I'm about through with my saddle days. Book Computers Chess and Long Range Planning

Download or read book Computers Chess and Long Range Planning written by Michail M. Botvinnik and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 97 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mihail Moiseevich Botvinnik is an electrical engineer by profession; during World War II he headed a high-tension laboratory in the Urals and was decorated by the USSR for his accomplishments. At present, he is the head of the alternating-current machine laboratory at the Moscow Institute of Power Engineering. He is also a world-renowned chess player. He was born in 1911, and by 1935 had become a Grandmaster of Soviet chess. In 1948 he won the world chess championship and held the title until 1963 (except for a two-year break). His chess style has been characterized as deep, objective, serious, and courageous. In this book, the quality of his thinking is revealed in his study of the basic thought processes of master chess players, and his reduction of these processes to mathematical form. This formalization of thought processes is a contribution to science at three levels: at the immediate level, it provides a basis for a computer program that seems likely to succeed in playing chess; at the middle level, game-playing programs help us to study and rationalize the processes of planning and decision-making; and, at the highest level, the study of the mind in action, as in the game of chess, leads to an understanding of human thought and of the human psyche.

I'll settle down and turn out one piece of work that'll last after I'm gone, and last with my signature on it!" That was fifteen years ago. And for fifteen years he had labored to make Andy a man according to a grim pattern which was known in the Lanning clan, and elsewhere in the mountain desert. His program was as simple as the curriculum of a Persian youth. On the whole, it was even simpler, for Jasper concentrated on teaching the boy how to ride and shoot, and was not at all particular that he should learn to speak the truth. But on the first two and greatest articles of his creed, how Jasper labored!
