Book excerpt: Excerpt from Free Prisoners Following, were two hearts almost broken by the loss Of the sweet spirits that had filled them for a little season, and left them dreary and void at their flight. Over the way was a vine-covered cottage, very humble, but ever so cheery, where a young mother bent anxiously and lovingly over her two cherubs, lest they, too, might take wings and fly away. Fever was sweeping the purest and sweetest from mothers' hearts and breasts. Every hour struck a death-knell. Pesti lence was everywhere in the heated, poisonous atmosphere. It seemed as if the great Creator had need Of very precious jewels in his heavenly mansion, for the harvester was merciless. The rich man's children died and were buried; the poor young mother's lived. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book A Fastidious Prisoner Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Fastidious Prisoner Classic Reprint written by Albert Edward Winship and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-04 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Fastidious Prisoner Both the adjectives and illustrations are chosen for their effect, rather than for their relation to fact. If the article were sure to be carefully read, there would be no occasion to reply to it, for it furnishes its own internal evidence of unreliability. For twenty-five years the writer has undoubtedly been giving private rehearsalsof prison experiences, enlarging upon them as his imagination broadened and intensified, until at last he has gone into print, more anxious to live up to his oral versions than to keep within the bounds of reason. Upon this theory only can one account for such a story. When the adjectives and the overstatements are eliminated, this recital of Cold Cheer is little more than a petulant complaint that as prisoners of war they were not feasted and feted as distinguished guests. All that we ask is that it be read with the distinct understanding that its author writes of war times; that he was a prisoner of war, and was fed and clothed by the government. He makes four general charges abusive treatment, cruelty, starvation, and freezing to death. He bases the charge of abusive treatment upon the fact that prisoners were sometimes struck because they would not cease talking when an officer was pass ing. It is a matter of official report that it was practically impossible for an officer to go through the camp without beinginsulted. It was more difficult to disci pline the prison in this regard than it was our own camp. The prisoners would stroll near the sentry and mutter epithets, for which, if spoken under other circum stances, they would have been imme diately chastised. I recall a Sunday when they were holding open-air services. The preacher, in a prolonged prayer, plied anathemas so thick and fast, amid jubilant Amens, that I asked for authority to see that he ceased praying to be heard of men. This was not granted, and he continued to shout his abuse of the soldiers, officers, Yankee land, and the President. I never knew a case in which a man was slapped in the face for it, but I knew a thousand men who were ready for such a fray. I presume some men yielded to the provocation when officers or visitors were insulted. Suffice it to say that the abuse was provoked. Book The Works of Victor Hugo Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Works of Victor Hugo Classic Reprint written by Victor Hugo and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-18 with total page 702 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Works of Victor Hugo These Greek capitals, black with age, and quite deeply graven in the stone, with I know not what signs peculiar to Gothic caligraphy imprinted upon their forms and upon their attitudes, as though with the purpose of revealing that it had been a hand of the Middle Ages which had inscribed them there, and especially the fatal and melancholy meaning contained in them, struck the author deeply. He questioned himself; he sought to divine who could have been that soul in torment which had not been willing to quit this world without leaving this stigma of crime or unhappi ness upon the brow of the ancient church. Book Reminiscences of a Prisoner of War and His Escape Classic Reprint

Download or read book Reminiscences of a Prisoner of War and His Escape Classic Reprint written by Daniel Avery Langworthy and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-17 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reminiscences of a Prisoner of War and His Escape Soon after my escape from captivity and my arrival at the home of my father-in - law, at Elmira, New York, where my good wife was, my sister Sarah, who was older than myself, and her husband, came to see me. She sat down by my side and said: Now Daniel, tell me all about it. How you were captured, how treated while a prisoner of war, how you made your escape and worked your way from Columbia, South Carolina, to Elmira. She held me to a strict account until she had the full story. I then told her that if after that I should be asked about it I would refer them to her (she would have given a good narrative), but unfortunately she is not living now. I have never been much inclined to talk about my prison life, nor had thought of writing about it until recently when some of my comrades, who had been talking with me about it, sug gested and strongly urged that I write it out. The result of which is these reminiscences. Doubtless I could have told this story betterfifty years ago, for, as I did not keep a diary or any memorandum, it is entirely from mem ory, yet the events made a fixed impression on my mind and I believe that what I have herein narrated is correct. I was born January 3rd. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
