Book A Souvenir of Niagara Falls Showing Summer and Winter Views of Niagara Falls and Their Surroundings Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Souvenir of Niagara Falls Showing Summer and Winter Views of Niagara Falls and Their Surroundings Classic Reprint written by James Bayne Company and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-04-25 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Souvenir of Niagara Falls: Showing Summer and Winter Views of Niagara Falls and Their Surroundings What a visit to Niagara Falls would cost; they had no established price for anything. They endeavored to read their victim, judge from his appearance how much money he was liable to have in his possession, his gullibility, and deal with him accordingly. The writer will never forget his first visit to Niagara Falls in 1866. (he was somewhat younger then and less experienced in the ways of depraved humanity.) Before he got away from them he was thoroughly convinced that he had surely fallen among thieves and robbers, and was very thankful to get away with the same clothes he had when he arrived. To think of carrying away any cash was absurd. However, there have been great changes wrought since that time. In 1885 the State of New York purchased 107 acres of land in the immediate vicinity of the Falls, comprising all of Goat and other islands; also a strip of land on the main shore extending from the new Suspension Bridge below the Falls to Port Day, about two miles above. The appraisers of this property awarded the owners removed all objectionable buildings, and laid out beautiful drives and walks. The Canadian government soon followed the example of the Americans and purchased an area of 154 acres, at an expense of and named it Victoria Park. In 1888 it was opened up to the public. What nature has done for Niagara has been widely supplemented by the actions of two great nations. Thus by the gener osity of the two great commonwealths the public has been given free access to one of the greatest natural curiosities of the world. Every facility has been afforded the tourists to see the sights to the best possible advantage and at the least possible expense. If you wish to walk around there are no restrictions. If you wish to take a carriage the prices are very moderate and regulated by the State. In fact all charges for services rendered the tourists are under restrictions and very moderate. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Loyal Lass: A Story of the Niagara Campaign of 1814 It was getting dark in the woods which ran along above the deep gorge through which whirled and rushed the waters of the Niagara River, and Marianne Reyburn unconsciously hurried her steps; for, though a frontier lass and fearless to a degree, she was alive to the dangers which lay hidden in the forest, and at this particular time she felt a new apprehension, for there were mutterings of a war with England, and that meant - what, she hardly knew. It might include other dangers beside the Indian horrors of which her grandmother was always ready to tell her. Those tales of the early settlements, of the days of Frontenac, of the Seven Years' War, and of the "Hungry Year," were what had fed her childhood's fancy, and even now she listened to them with wide-open eyes and parted lips. Book Illustrated Guide to Toronto by Way of Niagara Falls

Download or read book Illustrated Guide to Toronto by Way of Niagara Falls written by Canada Railway News Company and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-07 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Illustrated Guide to Toronto by Way of Niagara Falls: With Indexed Map of the City, Showing Street Car Lines For centuries the Falls of Niagara have commanded the attention and admiration of the world, but never to a greater degree than at the present time. When the spindles of industry crowded close up to their magnificent beauty, mankind worshipped their sublimity and saw in them grandeur that demanded protection from the inroads of enterprise and speculative capital. The Niagara Falls of to-day is the Temple of Nature, and the fact that the Governments of two countries, United States and Canada, have seen fit to assume the great responsibility of taking charge of the lands about Niagara Falls to preserve their beauty and restore the locality to a primeval state, where mankind can roam free for all time, is designed to make this paradise still more beautiful and attractive. Travellers from all countries and all climes visit them and bow in admiration, freely accepting them as one of the grandest works of nature and of God's handiwork. Prospect Point is where the best View of the American Falls can be had and enjoyed; also on the rocks at the foot of the inclined railway in Prospect Park, looking at the downpour of water, you marvel at the greatness and beauty of the mighty flood. Still another impressive view can be had from a pretty look-out point on Goat. Island, which takes in all the beauty and grace of Luna Island and the upper steel arch bridge and stretches far down the Gorge nearly to the Whirlpool Rapids. The Horseshoe or Canadian Falls can be seen to advantage from the deck of the steamer Maid of the Mist. It is said that fully ten times as much water passes over the Horseshoe fall as over the American fall, and this fact is recognized when the Horseshoe is viewed from below. Terrapin Point on Goat Island is still another spot where the Horseshoe fall shows its majesty and power. Book Transactions of the American Dental Association at the Eighteenth Annual Session

Download or read book Transactions of the American Dental Association at the Eighteenth Annual Session written by Geo. H. Cushing and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-12-06 with total page 754 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Transactions of the American Dental Association at the Eighteenth Annual Session: Held at Niagara Falls, Commencing on the 6th of August, 1878 It is here suggested that the chairman of each section divide his subject into as many parts or heads as a proper analysis or dissection will permit, and by correspondence or otherwise obtain the Conclusions of each member of his section upon all or any one or more of these parts and embody these conclusions with his own in the report prepared by him for the Association. Of course these conclusions should be based on careful investigation and supported by facts, because no proposition or statement has any value in a scientific point of view unless so based and supported; and one great Object in the introduction and adoption of this system is to bring the diverse views, theories, and propositions which are at this time or may in future come before our profession, to that test, and thus establish and fortify the true and eliminate those having no solid foundation. It would probably be well for this Association to constitute the chair men of the several sections a committee to mature and adopt some general plan, and, as far as they can, the details of the work of the sections. While it would be desirable that all the members of the Association should have the benefit of the discussions elicited in the sections while making up the reports, yet that is impossible. As now, the consideration Of the report made would afford the best occasion for profitable discussion and instruction. It will be readily understood that while the treatment of the past history and former developments of a subject may make the first two or three reports of a section lengthy, yet, when they shall have been disposed of, the current condition of such subject will probably furnish matter for only brief reports, and at that time, therefore, the number of divisions and sections reported in the following resolutions will not be too great, though at present it may seem cumbersome: Resolved, That the membership of this Association be, and is hereby, divided into twelve permanent sections, each section to be composed of such members as may elect to unite and form that section.
