Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Free Joe, and Other Georgian Sketches In the year Of our Lord 1840, when a negro-specu lator Of a Sportive turn Of mind reached the little village Of Hillsborough on his way to the Mississippi region, with a caravan of likely negroes Of both sexes, he found much to interest him. In that day and at that time there were a number of young men in the village who had not bound themselves over to repentance for the various misdeeds Of the flesh. To these young men the negro-speculator (major Framp ton was his name) proceeded to address himself. He was a Virginian, he 'declared; and, to prove the statement, he referred all the festively inclined young men Of Hillsborough to a barrel Of peach-brandy in one of his covered wagons. In the minds of these young men there was'less doubt in regard to the age and quality of the brandy than there was in regard to the negro-trader's birthplace. Major Frampton might or might not have been born in the Old Dominion, - that was a matter for consideration and inquiry, - but there could be no question as to the mellow pungency of the peach-brandy. Book Free Joe and Other Georgian Sketches 1887 by Joel Chandler Harris

This book was released on 2016-02-25 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The name of Free Joe strikes humorously upon the ear of memory. It is impossible to say why, for he was the humblest, the simplest, and the most serious of all God's living creatures, sadly lacking in all those elements that suggest the humorous. It is certain, moreover, that in 1850 the sober minded citizens of the little Georgian village of Hillsborough were not inclined to take a humorous view of Free Joe, and neither his name nor his presence provoked a smile. He was a black atom, drifting hither and thither without an owner, blown about by all the winds of circumstance, and given over to shiftlessness.

This book was released on 2021-03-29 with total page 4380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The American author and creator of the folk character Uncle Remus, Joel Chandler Harris produced a wide body of works, reflecting his life and interests in the Deep South. As a young journalist, he established a reputation as a brilliant humorist and writer of dialect. His Uncle Remus stories secured for Harris a place in American literature. The format was an instant success — a wise and genial old black man, Uncle Remus narrates tales of Brer Rabbit, Brer Fox and other animals to the son of a plantation owner, while interweaving his philosophy of the world about him. Harris’ later novels reveal his ability as a writer of ‘local color’, exploring important issues facing the South after its Reconstruction. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the early nineteenth century, the southern poor white had a reputation for comic vulgarity and absurd violence; postbellum writers saw him as a quaint peasant; the 1920s transformed him into a revolutionary proletarian. Of the literary treatments discussed, Steinbeck's Grapes of Wrath emerges as a skillful compromise of documentary accuracy and political daring by reviving the tradition of degeneracy. Book Encyclopedia of American Humorists

Download or read book Encyclopedia of American Humorists written by Steven H. Gale and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-14 with total page 578 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1988, this book contains entries on famous American Humorists. Humor has been present in American literature, from the beginning, and has developed characteristics that reflect the American character, both regional and national. Although American literature was, in the past, treated as inferior to British literature, there has always been a large popular audience for the genre, which this book shows. The figures with entries in this encyclopedia not only amuse in their writing, but also aim to enlighten- setting out to expose the foibles and foolishness of society and the individuals who compose it. It is the manner in which these authors try to accomplish this end that determines whether they appear in the volume. Indeed, the book will demonstrate that the best humor has at its base, a ready understanding of human nature.
