Book Save the Bees with Natural Backyard Hives

Download or read book Save the Bees with Natural Backyard Hives written by Rob McFarland and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2015-11-10 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: You don't need to live on a farm to raise happy, healthy honeybees. All it takes is a small backyard and the guidance of Rob and Chelsea McFarland, founders of HoneyLove - a Los Angeles-based nonprofit dedicated to protecting honeybees and educating a new generation of urban, suburban and rural beekeepers. Beekeeping is a relaxing and intriguing hobby that requires little time. It yields fresh, local honey beekeepers can keep or share, and bees help pollinate nearby gardens, trees and crops, which need help. Around the country, bee populations are declining - in part because bees raised to pollinate crops are not as durable as wild bees. Save the Bees with Natural Backyard Hives has the solution. Save the Bees with Natural Backyard Hives will walk readers through the inexpensive and easy to use equipment, their method for acquiring a hive for free, caring for the bees as they grow their colony, harvesting honey and prepping their bees for the cooler months. With the approach in this book, readers will learn to attract wild bees, which while hybridized, are hardier than genetically homogenized bees that are raised in labs. Factory-farmed bees are often advertised as "natural" but are more susceptible to disease and tend to require farmers to use chemicals and pesticides to keep them alive. This approach does not use chemicals or pesticides and, instead, opts for natural care and management. With minimal upkeep, the hives will pollinate local crops and flowers and provide a bounty of delicious, all-natural, backyard honey.

Download or read book Free Bees written by Grant F. C. Gillard and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2012-12-24 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Want to start keeping honey bees? If you are struggling to get started in beekeeping, you know it costs a ton of money to buy all the equipment. Shipping charges are increasing every year. Costs continue to go up. Bees, in certain times during the season, are in short supply. But during the spring, you can line up to acquire your bees for "free!"Yes, the bees are free but there will always be a cost in terms of your time and motivation. But the good news is those costs are relative. And the GREAT news is that you can catch swarms of “free” bees without incurring the out-of-pocket cash costs of buying a package of bees or a nuc. You can catch free bees to replace winter dead-outs. You can catch free bees to expand your apiary. You can catch free bees to increase the number of locations where you keep bees or even expand your hives to start a pollination service. In a nutshell, you don't have to buy bees and incur the out-of-pocket expenses that hold a lot of hopeful people back from enjoying a wonderful hobby that holds tremendous business potentials. If that's enough information, I encourage you to order this book. If you're just mildly curious, keep reading.Like a lot of people, we usually have more time than money and the bees are out there for the expense of our time. I've been keeping honey bees since 1981. This book is about my experiences finding, catching and keeping free bees. With this book and the information within, you'll likewise be able to position yourself to receive free bees and save a bunch of money. Or at least you won't have to shell out those hard earned dollars to buy bees. And as you peruse this manuscript, let me give you some great news: never before have there been so many opportunities for free bees. First, the horror stories coming out of the southern United States with respect to “Africanized,” or “killer” bees has the general public on high alert. The fear of honeybees, ANY honeybee, is at an all-time high (though I think this fear is rather senseless and irrational). When people see bees, they want someone else to deal with them, and deal with them NOW! And every time I rescue a swarm, I'm bombarded with questions, “Are those the killer bees?”Second, with the loss of honeybees to Colony Collapse Disorder, or CCD for short, never has there been a time when people do not want to kill honeybees. They believe there is a shortage of honeybees (a debatable topic skewed by selective reporting from our news media). They want to give the honeybee every opportunity to survive. But not in their backyard. And this is kind of a paradoxical irony: They don't want to kill the bees, but they don't want them around. The bottom line comes to the reality that the general public is looking for people, beekeepers like you and me, to come remove and retrieve honeybees and take them away. Never before has the opportunity for beekeepers been greater than now. The general public goes crazy when they find a swarm of honeybees and they'll make fifteen phone calls looking for someone to take the bees off their hands. It would be easier to kill the bees, but there is a new thread woven into the public consciousness that recognizes it's just wrong to do so.The result is more people in the general population are looking for specialized people (beekeepers like you and me) to come and get rid of their bees. People hail you as a hero! I like doing this because I get free bees out of the deal! This manuscript is about finding those opportunities so people call you. You can acquire a bunch of free bees with a little effort and a little time. I have done this, and I'll show you how you can, too. There are many ways to collect free bees, and ultimately, you'll have to choose the method that works best for you. I'll explain all those details in this book.

Book Treatment Free Beekeeping

Download or read book Treatment Free Beekeeping written by David Heaf and published by Ibra & Nbb. This book was released on 2021-01-04 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since varroa arrived in Europe and America in the 1980s, most beekeepers have found it necessary to treat their colonies with chemicals in order to avoid heavy colony losses. But a minority of beekeepers have managed to care for their colonies without the use of chemicals and have done so with not just tolerable colony losses, but with losses that are sometimes equal to or smaller than the losses of those beekeepers who treat with chemicals. With the help of thirty examples of treatment-free beekeepers in Europe and America, including famous names in varroa-resistant bee breeding, this book documents the encouraging success and growing popularity of beekeeping without chemicals, and details the bee husbandries of the beekeepers presented.

Book Bees as Superorganisms

  • Author : Robin Moritz

Download or read book Bees as Superorganisms written by Robin Moritz and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The honeybee (Apis melli/era L. ) is one of the better studied organisms on this planet. There are plenty of books on the biology of the honeybee for all, the scientist, the beekeeper, and the layman. In view of this flood of publications one is tempted to ask: why does it require another one? The answer is simple: a new one is not required and we do not intend to present a new book on "the honeybee". This would really just add some more inches to the already overloaded bookshelf without sub stantial new information. Instead, we intend to present a book on the honeybee colony. This of course immediately releases the next question: so what is the difference? Although the difference may look insignificant at first glance, we try to guide the reader with a fundamentally different approach through the biology of honeybees and eusocial insect societies in general. The biology of individual colony members is only addressed when it is necessary to explain colonial mechanisms, and the colony as a whole, as a biological unit, which is the main focus of this treatise. Both of us felt that all current textbooks on bee biology put too much emphasis on the individual worker, queen or drone in the colony. Often it is com pletely neglected that the colony is a very significant (if not the most significant) biological structure in bee biology.

Book The Beekeepers How Humans Changed the World of Bumble Bees Scholastic Focus

Download or read book The Beekeepers How Humans Changed the World of Bumble Bees Scholastic Focus written by Dana L. Church and published by Scholastic Inc.. This book was released on 2021-03-02 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dive deep into the world of this everyday insect -- and the science behind its uncertain future. Bumble bees are as familiar to most of us as the flowers these fuzzy insects feed upon. But did you know that the bees in your garden could be escapees from a local greenhouse, or descended from stowaways on a Viking ship?Bumble bees are a vital part of our lives and Earth's ecosystems, so much so that we've commercialized their breeding and shipped them across states, countries, and ecosystems for our benefit. However, all of that human interference has consequences. Bumble bees are pushing out native species and altering ecosystems worldwide. Pesticide use has led to the spread of disease in local colonies. And some species may be disappearing entirely. The Beekeepers is an expertly researched overview of bumble bees -- from hive hierarchies to how their brains work -- and the passionate humans and scientists who are fighting for their survival. With a thoughtful and accessible voice, researcher Dana Church introduces readers to the fascinating world of bumble bees, how and why some are thriving while others are floundering, and how both experts and regular citizens are working to ensure their future. Equal parts endearing, frustrating, and hopeful, this scientific narrative is essential for readers looking to understand and make an impact on our changing world.
