Book The Master Trend

Download or read book The Master Trend written by Cheryl Russell and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-10-07 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Baby Boom generation is leading the nation into the future. Having elected one of its own to the White House, this generation - the largest and best educated in history - is poised to place its imprint on the 21st century. Cheryl Russell - acclaimed author of 100 Predictions for the Baby Boom and former editor-in-chief of American Demographics - meets the challenge of predicting the daunting future of this most singular of generations. Russell perceptively shows why members of the Baby Boom generation, born between 1946 and 1964, have always embraced their independence. This individualism has become the master trend of our time. But the Baby Boom generation is now finding itself in the midst of a midlife crisis as it is pulled in one direction by its sense of individualism and in another by its children. Baby Boomers, known for following the beat of their own drummer, are suddenly awakening to the urgent need to bring society together for the sake of their children's future. The Baby Boom generation prizes individualism so highly that it has become the first generation of what Cheryl Russell calls "free agents." Like Curt Flood - baseball's first free agent - the Baby Boomers play by their own rules. Free agents have become both the creators and the eager customers of a new, fast-paced, hotly competitive "personalized economy" that seizes on cutting-edge technologies to produce the innovative and custom-designed products and services the world so sorely needs. Will this personalized economy bring prosperity to Americans? Can the free agents of the Baby Boom generation make life better for all of us? Will they learn to work together for the good of society? Most important, what kind of society are the Baby Boomers leaving to their children? In a culture that values individualism above all, what will happen to the unprepared millions who are trapped in the margins of society? In a world where the disparity between rich and poor has grown dramatically what kind of tensions will arise? The Baby Boom generation is now laying the foundation for the next century. The choices it makes today will reshape America either into a society of turmoil and danger or into a brave new world of cooperation and prosperity. In this landmark work, Cheryl Russell presents the blueprint by which the Baby Boom generation will leave its legacy for the future

Book Hegel s Idea of Freedom

Download or read book Hegel s Idea of Freedom written by Alan Patten and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 1999-08-19 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Freedom is the value that Hegel most greatly admired and the central organizing concept of his social philosophy. Alan Patten offers the first full-length treatment in English of Hegel's idea of freedom - his theory of what it is to be free and his account of the social and political contexts in which this freedom is developed, realized, and sustained. Patten's investigation illuminates and resolves a number of central questions concerning Hegel's ethics and political theory. Is Hegel's outlook unacceptably conservative? Can freedom be equated with rational self-determination? Is there any special connection between freedom and citizenship? By offering interpretations of Hegels views on these and other questions, Patten develops an original 'civic humanist' reading of Hegel's social philosophy that restores to its proper, central place Hegel's idea of freedom. The book is written in a clear and jargon-free style and will be of interest to anyone concerned with Hegel's ethical, social, and political thought and the sources of contemporary ideas about freedom, community, and the state.

Book Why Men Won t Commit

    Book Details:
  • Author : George Weinberg
  • Publisher : Simon and Schuster
  • Release : 2012-12-11
  • ISBN : 1471108457
  • Pages : 313 pages

Download or read book Why Men Won t Commit written by George Weinberg and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2012-12-11 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why are men afraid to commit? Dr Weinberg answers this question in WHY MEN WON'T COMMIT and shows women how to help their men change their minds. Dr Weinberg considers that men have four basic needs (the need to be special, to travel light, for loyalty and for emotional closeness) and if they feel that these aren't being met they will develop bad gut reactions against their girlfriends, which will most likely mystify these women. The problem for women and men is that men themselves couldn't tell you about these needs because they've grown up establishing a 'masculine pretence' that forbids them from showing emotion or discussing problems. Dr Weinberg's WHY MEN WON'T COMMIT provides a bridge between the two sexes that will lead to greater understanding, greater commitment and greater happiness. This is a unique approach to an age-old problem because it shows women why they needn't play games, or lose their own dignity, to help men commit. An informed, practical, straight-talking guide to men, or as Dr Weinberg calls them 'the fragile sex', WHY MEN WON'T COMMIT is invaluable to every woman who feels her single life must end - and soon!

Book Free Will Agency and Meaning in Life

Download or read book Free Will Agency and Meaning in Life written by Derk Pereboom and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2014-01-31 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Derk Pereboom articulates and defends an original conception of moral responsibility. He argues that if determinism were true we would not be morally responsible in the key basic-desert sense at issue in the free will debate, but that we would also lack this kind of moral responsibility if indeterminism were true and the causes of our actions were exclusively states or events. It is possible that if we were undetermined agent causes—if we as substances had the power to cause decisions without being causally determined to cause them—we would have this kind of free will. But although our being undetermined agent causes has not been ruled out as a coherent possibility, it's not credible given our best physical theories. Pereboom then contends that a conception of life without the free will required for moral responsibility in the basic-desert sense would nevertheless allow for a different, forward-looking conception of moral responsibility. He also argues that our lacking this sort of free will would not jeopardize our sense of ourselves as agents capable of rational deliberation, that it is compatible with adequate measures for dealing with crime and other threatening behavior, and that it allows for a robust sense of achievement and meaning in life. Pereboom's arguments for this position are reconfigured relative to those presented in Living without Free Will (2001), important objections to these arguments are answered, and the development of the positive view is significantly embellished.

Book Lead the Work

Download or read book Lead the Work written by John W. Boudreau and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2015-08-03 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A detailed look at the evolution of employment and its far-reaching implications Lead the Work takes an incisive look at the evolving nature of work, and how it's affecting management and productivity at the organizational level. Where getting things done once meant assigning it to an employee, today's leaders are increasingly at risk if they fail to recognize that talent can float into and out of an organization. Long-term employment has given way to medium- or short-term employment, marking the first step in severing the bond that once fixed an individual inside an organization. Getting work done by means other than an employee was once considered a fringe event, but now leading organizations are accepting and taking advantage of the notion that talent has shown itself to be mutable. This book explores this phenomenon in detail and provides a new roadmap to help managers navigate this new environment. The workplace has undergone many changes over the years, but the emerging trend away from traditional employment represents a massive shift that has profound implications for the business model of every organization, large or small. This book describes how management is changing, and how managers must adapt to survive. Examine the dispersed organization and the changing nature of employment Learn how work is becoming impermanent and individualized Find new strategies for managing and leading Get up to speed on the decision science for the new era Workplaces evolve like biological beings; only the strong survive, and it's the competitive edge that ensures continued success. Lead the Work describes the new landscape, and shows you how to adapt and thrive.
