Book excerpt: Excerpt from Frederick York Powell a Life and a Selection From His Letters, and Occasional Writings, Vol. 1 of 2 The following Memoir, like all such labours, is something of a mosaic; and many of the clearer and happier colours in the pattern are due to York Powell's friends. For the adding and inlaying, as well as for the choice of all materials, the editor has to answer. Various reasons have led me to include more of the handiwork of others than is common in biographies. I have come on few letters written by Powell before his twenty-eighth year, though in recompense there are some lively pictures of his youth and boyhood. He kept no diary. Hardly any of the letters he received, except those from Dr. Gudbrand Vigfusson, are in existence. I did not know him till he was thirty-five, and we were neighbours for only a few years, though we regularly met and corresponded. Another reason for quoting freely is that there were many sides, and thus many readings, of Powell. There is but one voice as to the strength and beauty of his affections. But his mind was so hospitable that he touched many persons and circles far apart from one another: 'different packs of cards' (as one of his oldest friends writes) 'which were never dealt out together.' Book excerpt: This book traces the transformation of history from a Romantic literary pursuit into a modern academic discipline during the second half of the nineteenth century, and shows how this change inspired Victorians to reconsider what it meant to be a historian. This reconceptualization of the ‘historian’ lies at the heart of this book as it explores how historians strove to forge themselves a collective scholarly persona that reflected and legitimised their new disciplinary status and gave them authority to speak on behalf of the past. The author argues that historians used the persona as a replacement for missing institutional structures, and converted book parts to a sphere where they could mould and perform their persona. By ascribing agency to titles, footnotes, running heads, typography, cover design, size, and other paratexts, the book makes an important shift in the way we perceive the formation of modern disciplines. By combining the persona and paratexts, it offers a novel approach to themes that have enjoyed great interest in the history of science. It examines, for example, the role which epistemic and moral virtues held in the Victorian society and scholarly culture, the social organization and hierarchies of scholarly communities, the management of scholarly reputations, the commercialization of knowledge, and the relationship between the persona and the underpinning social, political, economic, and cultural structures and hierarchies. Making a significant contribution to persona studies, it provides new insights for scholars interested in the history of humanities, science, and knowledge; book history; and Victorian culture.

The foremost American historian and a leading public intellectual in the first half of the twentieth century, Beard participated actively in the debates about American politics and foreign policy surrounding the two world wars. Drake takes this famous man's life and rewrites his intellectual biography by placing the European dimension of Beard's thought at the center. This radical change of critical focus allows Drake to correct previous biographers' oversights and, in Charles Austin Beard, present a far more nuanced appreciation for Beard's life than we have read before. Drake proposes a restoration of Beard's professional reputation, which he lost in large part because of his extremely unpopular opposition to America's intervention in World War II. Drake analyzes the stages of Beard's development as a historian and critic: his role as an intellectual leader in the Progressive movement, the support that he gave to the cause of American intervention in World War I, and his subsequent revisionist repudiation of Wilsonian ideals and embrace of non-interventionism in the lead-up to World War II. Many of his dire predictions about the inevitable consequences of pre-World War II American foreign policy have come to pass. Drake shows that, as Americans tally the ruinous costs—both financial and moral—of nation-building and informal empire, the life and work of this prophet of history merit a thorough reexamination.
