Despite national recognition as President of Actors’ Equity Association (AEA), pioneering efforts as co-founder of the American Negro Theatre, high visibility as one of the first black performers on television, and the notoriety of being blacklisted by the House Un-American Activities Committee, Frederick Douglass 0‘Neal remains a man about whom Americans naively ask: "Who was Frederick Douglass O’Neal?" The same question might be asked of numerous other historically significant black Americans. This book, which examines O’Neal’s sixty-year professional career until his retirement from AEA, adds a few significant pages to this missing history.

Book A Political Companion to Frederick Douglass

Download or read book A Political Companion to Frederick Douglass written by Neil Roberts and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2018-06-29 with total page 490 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Frederick Douglass (1818--1895) was a prolific writer and public speaker whose impact on American literature and history has been long studied by historians and literary critics. Yet as political theorists have focused on the legacies of such notables as W. E. B. Du Bois and Booker T. Washington, Douglass's profound influence on Afro-modern and American political thought has often been undervalued. In an effort to fill this gap in the scholarship on Douglass, editor Neil Roberts and an exciting group of established and rising scholars examine the author's autobiographies, essays, speeches, and novella. Together, they illuminate his genius for analyzing and articulating core American ideals such as independence, liberation, individualism, and freedom, particularly in the context of slavery. The contributors explore Douglass's understanding of the self-made American and the way in which he expanded the notion of individual potential by arguing that citizens had a responsibility to improve not only their own situations but also those of their communities. A Political Companion to Frederick Douglass also considers the idea of agency, investigating Douglass's passionate insistence that every person in a democracy, even a slave, possesses an innate ability to act. Various essays illuminate Douglass's complex racial politics, deconstructing what seems at first to be his surprising aversion to racial pride, and others explore and critique concepts of masculinity, gender, and judgment in his oeuvre. The volume concludes with a discussion of Douglass's contributions to pre-- and post--Civil War jurisprudence.

Book Every Step a Struggle

Download or read book Every Step a Struggle written by Frank Manchel and published by New Acdemia+ORM. This book was released on 2007-01-31 with total page 599 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “This fascinating collection of interviews is ‘must reading’ for anyone interested in the cultural politics of race in America. A unique historical resource.” —Denise Youngblood, author of Cinematic Cold War This book pays tribute to the sacrifices and achievements of seven individuals who made difficult and controversial choices to ensure that black Americans shared in the evolution of the nation’s cultural heritage. Transcriptions and analyses of never-before-published uncensored conversations with Lorenzo Tucker, Lillian Gish, King Vidor, Clarence Muse, Woody Strode, Charles Gordone, and Frederick Douglass O’Neal reveal many of the reasons and rationalizations behind a racist screen imagery in the first three-quarters of the twentieth century. This primary source, replete with pictures, documentation, and extensive annotations, recounts through the words of important participants what happened to many film pioneers when a new generation of African-Americans rebelled against the nation’s stereotyped film imagery. “The author has taken a unique approach and may have even created a new genre of writing: theinterview embellished with scholarly commentary. It is a fascinating experiment . . . This book belongs in every research library and in all public libraries from mid-size to large cities. It fills in lacunae between existing studies.” —Peter C. Rollins, Emeritus Editor-in-Chief of Film & History

Book Frederick Douglass in Washington D C

Download or read book Frederick Douglass in Washington D C written by John Muller and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2012-10-02 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Reconstruct[s] Douglass’s life in the nation’s capital, both at home and in the halls of power, in ways that no other biographer has done” (Leigh Fought, author of Women in the World of Frederick Douglass). The remarkable journey of Frederick Douglass from fugitive slave to famed orator and author is well recorded. Yet little has been written about Douglass’s final years in Washington, DC. Journalist John Muller explores how Douglass spent the last eighteen years of his life professionally and personally in his home, Cedar Hill, in Anacostia. The ever-active Douglass was involved in local politics, from aiding in the early formation of Howard University to editing a groundbreaking newspaper to serving as marshal of the District. During this time, his wife of forty-four years, Anna Murray, passed away, and eighteen months later, he married Helen Pitts, a white woman. Unapologetic for his controversial marriage, Douglass continued his unabashed advocacy for the rights of African Americans and women and his belief in American exceptionalism. Through meticulous research, Muller has created a fresh and intimate portrait of Frederick Douglass of Anacostia. Includes photos! “Muller’s book connects Douglass to the city and neighborhood the way no other project has yet been able to . . . you’re able to re-imagine the man and re-consider the possibilities of the place he once lived.” —Martin Austermuhle, DCist

But how can we better understand the lives and experiences of those who endured it? Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass is a harrowing first hand look at the brutal indignities of slavery in the nineteenth century, and the society that allowed it to happen. To better understand our shared present, we need to fully grapple with our difficult past. Douglass’ Narrative is a key piece of that puzzle. Book The Frederick Douglass Papers

Download or read book The Frederick Douglass Papers written by Frederick Douglass and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2009-12-08 with total page 723 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume of The Frederick Douglass Papers represents the first of a four-volume series of the selected correspondence of the great American abolitionist and reformer. Douglass’s correspondence was richly varied, from relatively obscure slaveholders and fugitive slaves to poets and politicians, including Horace Greeley, William H. Seward, Susan B. Anthony, and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. The letters acquaint us with Douglass’s many roles—politician, abolitionist, diplomat, runaway slave, women’s rights advocate, and family man—and include many previously unpublished letters between Douglass and members of his family. Douglass stood at the epicenter of the political, social, intellectual, and cultural issues of antebellum America. This collection of Douglass’s early correspondence illuminates not only his growth as an activist and writer, but the larger world of the times and the abolition movement as well.
