Book excerpt: This book examines the possibilities of political theorizing in the writings of early nineteenth-century German women and develops a new theory of reading women's domestic fiction. Drawing on feminism, new historicism, and hermeneutics for its theoretical framework, the study suggests significant changes to Jürgen Habermas's concept of the public sphere and women's role within it. The book re-evaluates the genre of domestic fiction and traces its use by women writers for political symbolism. Through novels, educational treatises, conduct manuals, poetry, and history books for women and children Caroline Fouqué, the principal voice in this study, and other authors of the period participated in the key debates of the early nineteenth century, among them the anguished discussions about the crisis in masculinity after the defeat of the Prussian army in 1806, the discourses of national identity, the construction of a national past, and the reorganization of the feudal state.

Book Medieval German Voices in the 21st Century

Download or read book Medieval German Voices in the 21st Century written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-11-08 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As witnessed by a tremendous upsurge in medieval research, academic meetings, innovative interpretive approaches, enrolment numbers, and public interest, Medieval Studies are proving once again to be a vibrant field of investigations both inside and outside of academia. Nevertheless, there is a tendency among colleagues and administrators in the field of Germanistik/German Studies to exclude the earlier period as an exotic and irrelevant subject matter. The contributors to this volume, all of whom teach at North American universities, make a strong case for the paradigmatic function of medieval German literature for the general field of Germanistik, and argue that many of the most recent changes in our discipline related to the German Studies paradigm have been foreshadowed by Medieval Studies where interdisciplinarity, comparative approaches, the consideration of Mentalitätsgeschichte, theology, history, art history, even gender studies, and the history of everyday life have often constituted the conditio sine qua non. Some of the authors in this volume argue for the relevance of medieval German literature by investigating concrete cases taken from the Middle Ages, others show how modern German literature has been deeply influenced by medieval texts. The purpose of this volume is not to privilege medieval literature over modern literature, but instead to reclaim the premodern period as an important and relevant field of investigation within contemporary German Studies.

Book Women in German Yearbook

Download or read book Women in German Yearbook written by Jeanette Clausen and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 1994-06-01 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The tenth volume of Women in German Yearbook offers new perspectives on issues of gender and sexual identity. Richard McCormick analyzes, through a reading of G. W. Pabst's film Geheimnisse einer Seele, social anxieties about gender identity in Weimar popular culture. Elizabeth Mittman discusses Christa Wolf and Helga K”nigsdorf as different "embodiments" of the drastically altered eastern German public sphere in 198990. Ruth-Ellen B. Joeres suggests that the homosocial content of letters by early nineteenth-century German women writers created a social sphere distinct from those usually identified as public or private.Marjorie Gelus analyzes the obsessive focus on sex and gender in three of Kleist's stories. Gail Hart argues that Kleist's defeminization of "Anmut" in his "Marionettentheater" essay reinforces the exclusivity of a male homosocial universe. The relationship of masochism to female erotic desire is the subject of Brigid Haines's examination of Lou Andreas-Salomä's Eine Ausschweifung. Silke von der Emde investigates Irmtraud Morgner's use of postmodern strategies to promote feminist goals. Susan Anderson rereads Monika Maron's Die _berlÜuferin, analyzing the self-emancipatory effects of fantasy.A cluster of articles providing feminist perspectives on the Holocaust is introduced by Ruth Kl_ger's "Dankrede zum Grimmelshausen-Preis." Karen Remmler discusses the relationship between memory and the portrayal of female bodies in two recent Holocaust narratives. Suzanne Shipley examines the significance of exile in the autobiographies of two women who fled Austria for New York. Sigrid Lange introduces Marie-Therese Kerschbaumer's Der weibliche Name des Widerstands, a challenge to Austria's attempts to minimize its role in Nazi persecutions. Miriam Frank provides an overview of lesbian literature and publishing practices in Germany, and Luise Pusch reports on a recent attempt at language censorship in the German parliament. The volume closes with the editors' look at Women in German after twenty years.Jeanette Clausen is an associate professor of German at Indiana UniversityPurdue University at Fort Wayne. She is coeditor of German Feminism and since 1987 has coedited the Women in German Yearbook.Sara Friedrichsmeyer is a professor of German at the University of Cincinnati, Raymond Walters College, and author of The Androgyne in Early German Romanticism. Book The Flight of the Silvers

Download or read book The Flight of the Silvers written by Daniel Price and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2015-01-06 with total page 626 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For fans of Blake Crouch, the propulsive first book in the genre-bending Silvers trilogy, in which six ordinary people become extraordinary when they find themselves the sole survivors of an apocalypse that lands them on an Earth far different from our own—one on which they have X-Men-like powers to manipulate time. Without warning, the world comes to an end. The sky looms frigid white. The electric grid falters. Airplanes everywhere crash to the ground, and finally, the sky comes down in a crushing sheet of light, taking out everything and everyone with it—except for Hannah and Amanda Given. Saved from destruction by three fearsome and powerful beings who adorn them each with an irremovable silver bracelet, the Given sisters suddenly find themselves on a strange new Earth where restaurants move through the air like flying saucers and the fabric of time itself is manipulated by common household appliances. Upon arrival to this alternate America, Hannah and Amanda are taken to a science laboratory where they meet four other survivors from their world, all of whom wear matching silver bracelets—a mordant cartoonist, a shy teenage girl, a brilliant young Australian, and a troubled ex-prodigy. While being poked and prodded by scientists who may be friends or enemies, the group discovers that it’s not only their world that is different—they are different. Each has the power to manipulate time with their bare hands…a power they can’t always control. With no one but each other to trust, “the Silvers” must find out what exactly happened to their world and why it was that they were spared. But with unexpected new enemies emerging from around every corner, their quest for answers will quickly become a cross-country quest for survival.

Book Frauen und Geschlechter Bilder Rollen Realit ten in den Texten antiker Autoren der r mischen Kaiserzeit

Download or read book Frauen und Geschlechter Bilder Rollen Realit ten in den Texten antiker Autoren der r mischen Kaiserzeit written by Christoph Ulf and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is an outcome of the FWF project P14853 "Ethnographie - Gender-Perspektive - Antikerezeption". The research project intended to connect ancient ethnography, gender studies and the running methodological debate. For this purpose the collaborators to the project organised two workshops. The volume contains the revised papers held at the first workshop Frauenbild und Geschlechterrollen bei antiken Autoren der römischen Kaiserzeit at the University of Innsbruck, 5.-8. 3. 2003. According to the goal of this workshop the papers connect the theoretical debates of postmodernism und feminism with the daily work of historians or philologists. Each paper touches , in some way or other, the premise underlying the mentioned project that an author's profile can be uncovered by comparing his text with other texts synchronically and diachronically. Most of the papers deal with the Roman imperial period. As a whole they cover the time span from the 5th century BCE to the 6th century CE. But they are not arranged chronologically but systematically. First comes a methodological introduction (C. Ulf and K. Schnegg) connected with a description of the papers. The first section then contains five articles pointing at the 'basis and kind of text and its lecture' (Grundlagen und Formen der Texte und der Textlektüre). The authors deal with Augustine, archaeological remains, and modern movies as well. Seven articles focusing on the topic 'historical realities within texts' (Historische Realität(en) im Text) build up the second section. They deal with the attic democray, Augustean propaganda, and authors from Cornelius Nepus to Synesios of Cyrene. In the last section 'text levels and pictures of sexes' (Textebenen und Bilder der Geschlechter) the reader finds articles concerning some aspects of ancient ethnography and the gender perspective of authors from Tacitus to Ennodius. The volume offers, in a broad chronological spectrum, varied perspectives on and ways of dealing with texts by separating consciously the search for historical realities form the interpretation of texts.
