Book excerpt: The Fraser Timber Supply Area (TSA) covers about 1.1 million hectares in south-eastern mainland British Columbia, of which about 280,000 hectares are currently considered as being available for timber harvesting. After a brief description of the TSA, this report reviews the principles for determining the allowable annual cut for the TSA and presents an accounting of the factors and the rationale used in making that determination. These factors include the role of the base-case timber supply forecast, the land base contributing to timber harvesting, the existing forest inventory, the expected rate of forest growth, regeneration delay, areas not satisfactorily restocked, silvicultural systems, decay and wastage, integrated resource management objectives, alternative harvest flows, and timber processing facilities. The appendix contains relevant sections of provincial forestry legislation and a summary of public input to the Timber Supply Review for the Fraser TSA.
