Download or read book Aboriginal Pathways written by John Gladstone Steele and published by Univ. of Queensland Press. This book was released on 2015-09-18 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first European chroniclers of Indigenous Culture in Australia looked for the sensational, often neglecting its more significant features. In his fourth book on Queensland’s early history, J. G. Steele corrects this imbalance with a detailed account of the Indigenous people of the subtropical coast at the time of their earliest contact with white settlers. The region described is centred on Brisbane, extending along the coast to Fraser Island, to Evens Head in New South Wales, and inland to the Great Dividing Range. Drawing on early accounts, photographs, place-names, languages, legends, archeology, and museum collections, Aboriginal Pathways provides a wealth of fascinating and important material, much of it relevant to debates on Indigenous land rights and sacred sites of the 1980s.

Book Constructions of Colonialism

Download or read book Constructions of Colonialism written by Ian J. McNiven and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 1999-01-01 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most famous shipwreck sagas of the 19th century took place on the tropical coast of north-east Australia. In 1836 the Stirling Castle was wrecked off the Queensland coast and many of the crew, together with the captain's wife, Eliza Fraser, were marooned on Fraser Island. Early sensationalized accounts represent Mrs Fraser as an innocent white victim of colonialism and her Aboriginal captors as barbarous savages. These "first contact" narratives of the white woman and her Aboriginal "captors" impacted significantly on England and the politics of Empire at an early stage in Australia's colonial history. The text critically examines the Eliza Fraser episode by bringing together an interdisciplinary team of authors, artists, members of the Fraser Island Aboriginal community and academics in the areas of cultural and women's studies, literature, history, anthropology, archaeology, the visual and creative arts. This book Essays include feminist analyses of the incident, investigations of textual and visual representations of Aboriginal people, and considerations of the role played by Elisa Fraser as creative inspiration for the arts. The text explores the constructions of Empire, colonialism, identity, femininity, savagery, otherness, captivity and survival.

Book Ecological Vulnerability

  • Author : Katie Woolaston
  • Publisher : Cambridge University Press
  • Release : 2022-06-23
  • ISBN : 1009063227
  • Pages : 247 pages

Download or read book Ecological Vulnerability written by Katie Woolaston and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2022-06-23 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Humans are responsible for biodiversity loss in many related and sometimes conflicting ways. Human-wildlife conflict, commonly defined as any negative interaction between people and wildlife, is a primary contributor to wildlife extinction and a manifestation of the destructive relationship that people have with wildlife. The author presents this 'wicked' problem in a social and legal context and demonstrates that legal institutions structurally deny human-wildlife conflict, while exacerbating conflict, promoting values consistent with individual autonomy, and ignoring the interconnected vulnerabilities shared by human and non-human species alike. It is the use of international and state law that sheds light on existing conflicts, including dingo conflict on K'Gari-Fraser Island in Australia, elephant conflict in Northern Botswana, and the global wildlife trade contributing to COVID-19. This book presents a critical analysis of human-wildlife conflict and its governance, to guide lawyers, scientists and conservations alike in the transformation of the management of human-wildlife conflict.

Book Traveling with Skeptics

Download or read book Traveling with Skeptics written by Ken Ewell and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2009-11 with total page 494 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traveling with Skeptics is the much anticipated sequel to the critically acclaimed book, Traveling with Philosophes. However, due to the author's honest and straightforward portrayal of the people of France, he has incurred the wrath and condemnation of the French literary and intellectual establishment, with many persons voicing harsh opinions as regards this unique and insightful work. Insignificant writers cannot be crushed, they lie too flat beneath the foot. Honore de Balzac The art of writing is the art of discovering what you believe. Clearly, this most presumptuous writer believes in nothing. Gustave Flaubert Since a person is never happy except at the price of some ignorance, this writer must be the happiest man in the world. Anatole France As soon as he ceased to be mad he became merely stupid. As soon as he ceased to be stupid he became merely this writer. Marcel Proust This author should be deconstructed with the aid of a guillotine. Jacques Derrida There is but one truly philosophical problem, and that is this author's suicide ... or murder. Albert Camus If Hell is other people, then this writer can go to Hell. Jean-Paul Sartre

Book Australia New Zealand and the Pacific

Download or read book Australia New Zealand and the Pacific written by Donald S. Garden and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2005-08-19 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fascinating study of the environmental history of Australia, New Zealand, and the islands of the Pacific, from the time of the dinosaurs to the present day. Of interest to students and academics alike, this book provides a much-needed synthesis of the recent literature on the environmental history of Australia and Oceania. Part of ABC-CLIO's Nature and Human Societies series, this book maps out the key trends in the region's environmental history, charting the creation of the Australian continent from the ancient land mass of Gondwanaland to the arrival of humans. Especially fascinating are the chapters highlighting how successive waves of human migration created environmental havoc throughout the region, leading to the collapse of the Easter Island civilization and the spread of nonindigenous flora and fauna. From the controversies over the reasons why creatures such as the marsupial lion and the giant kangaroo became extinct to such contemporary problems as deforestation and global warming, this book contains sobering lessons for us all.

Book Regional Impacts of Resource Developments

Download or read book Regional Impacts of Resource Developments written by C. C. Kissling and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-08-23 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1984. Australia is a resource-rich country deriving a significant proportion of its export earnings from trade in these resources. At the same time, the country is young, sparsely populated beyond the coastal fringe, particularly in the resource-rich areas, and environmentally fragile. The consequences of resource exploitation in these areas have far-reaching policy implications. A range of these concerns is canvassed in this volume, encompassing the views of policy-makers, planners and academics. Five chapters address social and economic impacts ranging over manufacturing and tertiary industry, immigration and labour markets, employment and population and the provision of educational facilities. Many of these are seen in microcosm in the Hunter Valley, New South Wales. Two contributions offer an international perspective, one in another federal system – Canada – and one where Australian interests are participating in resource extraction – Papua New Guinea. The issues raised are fundamental to Australia's development in the 1980's and of importance to everyone connected with the development and planning of Australia's future.

Book Coastal Management in Australia

Download or read book Coastal Management in Australia written by Nick Harvey and published by University of Adelaide Press. This book was released on 2010 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The coast is one of our most valuable assets but how is it being treated and what is being done to look after it? COASTAL MANAGEMENT IN AUSTRALIA is the first book to provide a comprehensive overview of this important subject. Interesting case studies are used to illustrate human impact on coastal processes as well as demonstrating the global significance of the coast and the international imperative to manage it properly. COASTAL MANAGEMENT IN AUSTRALIA introduces the background to the various coastal management systems operating in Australia and illustrates these with 'real world' examples from the different states and territories. Since this book was first published yet another parliamentary inquiry has been added to some 30 years of national inquiries into coastal management, with further calls for national co-ordination. In addition, the Australian government has focused attention on the potential risks of climate change for the Australian coast. Both authors have national and international coastal expertise; significant academic teaching experience in coastal processes and coastal management; coastal planning and policy skills; and have extensive government expertise in coastal management.
