Download or read book Franklin Township Hunterdon County written by Dan Campanelli and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2010 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Franklin Township is a picturesque, rural oasis with rich soils and sparkling streams in the heart of Hunterdon County. Settled in the early 1700s by Quakers, it was touched by the Revolutionary War. Although the township was never occupied by British troops, New Jersey deputy quartermaster general Moore Furman's gristmill supplied flour for George Washington's troops. Its beginnings as a farming and milling community remain at the heart of Franklin. Agriculture continues to hold cultural, historic, and scenic importance, and Hiram Deats, who manufactured a cast-iron plow patented by his father, John, in 1828, is still honored. Charming villages and hamlets boast 99 historic stone structures and 183 frame homes built before 1900. This idyllic area stands as proof that nature and bucolic farmland still hold sway in one of the nation's most densely populated states.

Download or read book Franklin Lakes written by Borough of Franklin Lakes and Colin Knight and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2022-09-12 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first Dutch settlers arrived in the area that would become Franklin Lakes in the 1600s and soon developed a strong agricultural community as a part of Franklin Township. Communities were developed around Crystal Lake and Campgaw, and by the late 1860s, a new railroad would bring further development to the growing community. Prominent families such as the Ackermans, Demarests, Pulises, Storms, and Zabriskies were leaders in the area, and their marks on the landscape of the town are evident today in the surviving homes, road names, and descendants. After Franklin Lakes became an independent municipality in 1922, new housing developments, businesses, and amenities were created. The community continues to grow and improve while retaining strong ties to its history.

Download or read book Franklin The Autobiography and Other Writings on Politics Economics and Virtue written by Benjamin Franklin and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2004-10-21 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Benjamin Franklin is one of the best known and most widely admired figures in American history. His wit and charm make him endearing; his practical intelligence and commitment to middle-class virtues like thrift and industry make him admirable. Indeed to many he is 'the first American'. Ironically, this identification of Franklin with American popular culture diminishes the breadth and depth of his contributions to modern political thought. The present volume provides the textual foundation for a fuller understanding of Franklin's thought, and represents a major addition to the Cambridge Texts series. Readers interested in the Autobiography will find a new and complete edition based on the original manuscript. Those interested in the full range of Franklin's political ideas will find a selection of his most important letters, essays and pamphlets. Alan Houston's lucid introduction brings life to these texts and sets them in their proper historical context.
