Book excerpt: In 1982, a unique event took place in the Tasmanian wilderness that changed theenvironmental and political landscape of Australia forever. The fledgling TasmanianWilderness Society (TWS) ran a mass, non-violent, direct-action campaign to stopa dam being built and save the last wild river in Tasmania -- the Franklin. The campaign grew at a phenomenal pace. It saw over 1400 arrests in the SouthWest Tasmanian Wilderness, a change of Federal Government, and a High Courtcase that finally determined to stop the dam and protect the World Heritage listedFranklin and Gordon rivers. This bookreveals some of the untold stories of the direct action that took place on theFranklin and Gordon rivers and in the surrounding forests. It pays respect to thosewho took the journey Up River and fills a gap in the historical accounts of this event.Focussing on just one part of the overall campaign, the Up Riverstories look behind the media images of the time and tell how they actually cameabout. They reveal how the Up River mob -- a diverse group of activists under theauspices of the TWS -- organised the logistics of the campaign on the River: ran the camps, drove the boats, guided folk along the tracks to get arrested, and, after the blockade ended, maintained an ongoing presence to monitordestruction throughout the summer and into the cold heart of winter.

  • Pages : 64 pages

Download or read book South Coast Track written by John Chapman and published by . This book was released on 2017-10 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contains comprehensive track notes for walking the South Coast Track in Tasmania. The guide has 9 -1:50,000 colour topographic maps of the entire track, 50 colour photographs plus gradient profiles of the track. This is an all colour production with full track notes for both directions along the trail. The colour topographic maps and notes have been colour coded for each direction to reduce confusion about which notes are currently being followed. This is one of the world's great wilderness walks and takes 6 to 8 days to walk. Most plan for 7 days and it is suggested to carry one spare days food in case of river floods causing delays. For those wishing to explore further than the South Coast Track, then the larger guide book South West Tasmania which also includes the South Coast Track should be considered. This book is actually a subset of that larger guide and we would expect walkers to use one or the other but not both. Note that the maps in South West Tasmania for the South Coast Track are a smaller scale (1:100,000) and there is less detail in the track notes as that book is designed for more experienced walkers.

Book Tasmania s Wilderness Battles

Download or read book Tasmania s Wilderness Battles written by Greg Buckman and published by Allen & Unwin. This book was released on 2008-06-01 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Tasmania's old-growth forests, its wild, untamed rivers and its remote, rugged mountain peaks are etched in the minds of most Australians but these wilderness areas have been the focus of bitter conflict between government, big business and environmentalists for the past 30 years. Although told mostly from an environmentalist's point of view, this book is a factual record of events. Beginning in the 1970s with the flooding of Lake Pedder, it takes the reader through the heady days of the Franklin River blockade and the more recent battles for Tasmania's old-growth forests, culminating with the controversial proposal for the Gunns pulp mill in the Tamar Valley. Unfolding events reveal something of how politics is done in the island state and why a climate of suspicion and mistrust persists among the various interest groups. These battles also have had ramifications for the whole of Australia. They have played a defining part in the shaping of the Green party as well as The Wilderness Society and The Australian Conservation Foundation. Never before has Tasmania been examined through the prism of conflicting values over wilderness. This approach shows what influence this single issue has had upon Tasmania's recent history."--Provided by publisher.

Book The Tasmanian Dam Case 30 Years on

Download or read book The Tasmanian Dam Case 30 Years on written by Michael Coper and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In one of the great contests between State and federal power, the Tasmanian Dam Case pitted the immovable object of Tasmania's commitment to a massive hydro-electric project against the irresistible force of the Commonwealth's determination to protect the environment. Who would prevail? Was it more important to create jobs and provide cheap power, or to preserve the natural beauty of the Tasmanian wilderness? On whom did the Australian Constitution confer the power to decide this question? By the narrowest of majorities, the High Court decided in 1983 that the Commonwealth had the final say, and upheld legislation that prohibited the construction of a dam on the Gordon River below the Franklin. Because of the passions aroused by the case, the Court took the unprecedented step of issuing a statement explaining that its job was not to decide whether the proposed dam was a good idea or not, but to determine whether this was a matter of State or federal power. Yet this issue was just as hotly contested. Could any subject be brought within federal power merely by the presence of an international treaty on that subject? Would affirming this proposition destroy the intended balance between State and federal power? Would denying the proposition disable Australia from full participation in international affairs? Three decades after the High Court's decision, these and other questions of law and policy remain of vital importance. This book brings together a fascinating collection of commentaries on the impact of the decision, and how the hopes and fears following the decision have played out. This stimulating and timely book contains reflections from then Commonwealth Attorney-General Gareth Evans, then High Court Justice Sir Anthony Mason and leading Indigenous lawyer Professor Mick Dodson. The book also examines some novel questions, such as whether the outcome of the case was inevitable, how similar issues have played out in Canada, and whether better conservation outcomes are more likely to come from the Commonwealth or the States. These and other chapters offer fresh perspectives on one of the most important cases in High Court history.
