Older people were firmer than nowadays. If someone did something wrong, not only did they get whipped by the old folks, but they told the person's parents and they got another one. Oh! Those golden memories will last a lifetime.

Book excerpt: "Franklin County, Massachusetts is an area brimming with anecdotes of American history, from the Colonial period ...through the Revolution, the Civil War, the opening and industrialization of the country to today's information age, the county has had a vital role. The photographs collected in this book open a window on the latter part-- photography came to the county in the 1840s-- of that story. The Recorder, with the help of readers and local historical organizations, has collected a fascinating sampling."-- p. 7.

Book Remembering Franklin County

Download or read book Remembering Franklin County written by Luann Yetter and published by American Chronicles. This book was released on 2009 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Snow swirled around the first Sandy River settlers in the winter of 1780, testing pioneering spirits. But the founders proved tough and able, incorporating Farmington in 1794 and soon establishing other towns, raising crops, building roads and institutions and bringing Franklin County to life. Former Lewiston Sun Journal columnist Luann Yetter describes the early years, the rumored Indian attack that led to the discovery of Rangeley Lakes, the World War I sacrifices of Company K and the Weld baseball player who managed Babe Ruth's Red Sox to two World Series championships. Yetter also notes the delinquent debt collected by Paul Revere, the murder suspect who made history by (unsuccessfully) defending himself and the near total destruction wrought by the flood of 1869. Describing war, wealth, industry and oddity, she reveals the richness of Franklin County's past.

Book History of Franklin County

Download or read book History of Franklin County written by William T. Martin and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 542 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Franklin County: A Collection of Reminiscences of the Early Settlement of the Country; With Biographical Sketches, and a Complete History of the County to the Present Time It is the design of this Work to preserve for the people of Franklin County an imperishable record of its early history - now existing only in the memory of the more aged settlers, and in scattering and detached papers and records, which are every year wasting away. To write the history of a single county, may to some appear like a very small business; while to others it is considered very desirable that some one should do so in every county. How else are the names and memory of our early settlers and friends to be preserved? And who is there that would not be pleased to look back, or to have his children look back, upon some record of his early days, and of departed friends? And how else Should strangers, settling among us, so readily obtain acknowledge of our institutions and public characters, as by some such local publication? Book excerpt: Be it Moonshine or Country Music, Franklin County has something for everyone and a story to entertain anyone In the fall of 1785, the Virginia General Assembly voted to create a new county in the southwestern part of the state. The new county, named after Benjamin Franklin, was formed from parts of Bedford and Henry Counties. In January 1786, the first court in Franklin County convened and the county government was established. Native sons who have risen to national prominence include African American educator Booker T. Washington and the only Confederate commander to lead an attack on Washington, DC, during the Civil War, Gen. Jubal A. Early. With an area of 712 square miles, the county includes the communities of Ferrum, Endicott, Sontag, Glade Hill, Snow Creek, Henry, Penhook, Union Hall, Burnt Chimney, Callaway, Wirtz, Redwood, Scruggs, Sydnorsville, and the town of Boones Mill. The county seat of Rocky Mount was incorporated after Rocky Mount and another village, Mount Pleasant, combined in 1873. Having acquired the title of the Moonshine Capital of the World during Prohibition, Franklin County is also the eastern anchor of Virginia's music heritage trail, the Crooked Road.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Created from a portion of Crawford County in 1837, Franklin County is divided by the Arkansas River into two sections, each with its own county seat: Ozark in the North and Charleston in the South. Northern Franklin County is remote, mysterious, and beautiful, while the southern area enjoys graceful and vastly productive prairie lands. The combination of fertile soil and mild climate in the Ozark Mountains produces fruit, vineyards, precious stones, granite, and forests. Evocative images such as the young girls posing in the Altus schoolyard paint a poignant and revealing picture of everyday life in Franklin County. Coal mining played a large part in the lives of residents, and photographs of soot-covered miners display the hardships of this difficult work. With over two hundred photographs gathered from local collections, this book illustrates the history and culture of Franklin County in vivid detail, with captions that are both entertaining and informative.
