Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This richly illustrated volume--the result of nearly a century of scholarship--tells the story of Franklin County's change through the lens of its remarkable architectural heritage. The original houses were modest dwellings of frame, log, and occasionally stone construction; wealthier farmers ornamented their houses in the Georgian and Federal styles. Mills, churches, and country stores provided focal points for the largely rural population. Later generations built impressive residences in the Greek Revival and Italianate styles. Cotton and tobacco undergirded economic development well into the twentieth century, attracting railroads and industry that contributed to the growth of Louisburg, Bunn, Franklinton, Youngsville, and other communities. Churches provided important support to the African American community, as did educational institutions like the county's many Rosenwald schools. Craftsman bungalows, Ranch houses, and notable examples of Modernist design enlivened county architecture during the twentieth century.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Franklin sits on a hill above the Little Tennessee River. The surveyors who chose the site in 1820 admired its beauty, laying out the town with Main Street facing the Cowee Mountains to the east and the Nantahala Range to the west. Though ringed by rugged summits, Franklin was linked to population centers by well-worn trails. It soon developed into the market center of southwestern North Carolina, a role it retains today, especially for the building trades, furniture, and jewelry. Richly blessed with gems and minerals, the town was once touted as the Gem Capital of the World. Franklin is also justly proud of its crafters, including quilters, woodworkers, potters, basket makers, and glass artists. The Franklin Press, founded in 1886, is the oldest business in the county. The Macon County Historical Society, operating in the old Pendergrass Store, and the Franklin Gem and Mineral Museum are perennial favorites with tourists. Franklin is also a gateway town for the Appalachian Trail, which passes nearby, attracting hikers almost year-round. Franklin showcases the rich commercial and community history of this North Carolina mountain town."

Download or read book Franklin County North Carolina Marriage Abstracts 1789 1868 written by and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The first recorded marriages in the Carolina area came in 1741 with the passage of a[n] act similar to that of Virginia requiring a bond to ensure the validity of the proposed marriage. That act remained in its basic unchanged form until it was modified in 1868 with the current state license process. These bonds form the core of the records abstracted here. The materials were first copied by youths during the depression under the National Youth Administration Project, a make-work assistance program created in the depths of the Great Depression... Later during the 30s the Historical Records Project, a creation of the Works Progress Administration (WPA) , organized the youth's transcriptions and the final copies were made under the supervision of the Genealogical Society of Utah. The original surviving marriage bonds are housed in the archives of the North Carolina Historical Commission in Raleigh, NC... The current work has been abstracted directly from these WPA 'originals'. In all, 3,114 marriages are included in the present work"--page iii.
