Book excerpt: Their meddling is meant to stop a Christmas wedding-not spark another romance Miles, Lord Bartlett, and the young widow Lady Jane Westwood had no designs to spend another Christmas in each other's company, but an unforeseen circumstance forces them to do just that. Miles' mother and Jane's dear friend, a retired sergeant, decide to marry after having been acquainted for only ten days. Miles and Jane quickly form an alliance with a single aim in mind: to stop this seemingly ill-fated union. Jane, who faced a similar situation in her first marriage, is certain the disparity in their social stations can only lead to disaster, while Miles is convinced the sergeant is pursuing his mother for her wealth alone. Among Christmas carols and evergreen boughs, Miles and Jane soon find themselves battling not only the romance of the season but also their growing attraction to each other. Will their meddling antics bring love this Christmas season, or only heartbreak? A clean and wholesome Regency romance novella, Frankincense and Folly is full of charming characters, witty dialogue, and Christmas magic. The books in this series can be read alone and in any order. Book 1: Silver Bells and Secrets Book 2: Sugar Plums and Scandal Book 3: Frankincense and Folly Book 4: Ivy and Intrigue (coming Winter 2024)

Book Interpreting Old Testament Wisdom Literature

Download or read book Interpreting Old Testament Wisdom Literature written by David G. Firth and published by InterVarsity Press. This book was released on 2017-03-21 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In popular perception, Wisdom literature is a "self-help" or "philosophy" section of the Old Testament library—the odd and interesting bits of canonical mortar between History and Prophets. Themes that are prominent elsewhere in the Old Testament receive only scant attention in the wisdom books. Proverbs, Job, and Ecclesiastes focus on everyday life rather than on God's special dealings with the nation of Israel. But Old Testament scholarship has come to see the wisdom of the wise as reflecting an aspect of the Israelite worldview, not something totally foreign. The covenant beliefs are presupposed, even if rarely rising to the surface. Wisdom must be learned from parents, teachers, and friends, but it is ultimately a gift from God—not primarily intellectual but intensely practical. The issues addressed—justice, faith, wealth, suffering, meaning, sexuality—are highly relevant today. The focus of this volume is on both wisdom books and wisdom ideas. The first section surveys recent developments in the field of Old Testament wisdom, and the second section discusses some issues that have arisen in Proverbs, Job, and Ecclesiastes, and examines the Song of Songs as a wisdom text. The final section explores wisdom in Ruth, in some Psalms, and in the broader field of Old Testament narrative (from Joshua to Esther), while also examining wisdom, biblical theology, the concept of retribution in wisdom, and the vexed issue of divine absence. The following contributors are featured: Christopher B. Ansberry Craig G. Bartholomew Lennart Boström Ros Clarke Katharine J. Dell David G. Firth Gregory Goswell Ernest C. Lucas Brittany N. Melton Simon Stocks Lindsay Wilson

Book The Modern Library Essential World History 4 Book Bundle

Download or read book The Modern Library Essential World History 4 Book Bundle written by Edward Gibbon and published by Modern Library. This book was released on 2012-02-27 with total page 2474 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Revisit a world of conquest, exploration, and imperial adventure with this Modern Library eBook bundle that includes Edward Gibbon’s The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, Francis Parkman’s Montcalm and Wolfe, William H. Prescott’s History of the Conquest of Mexico, and Theodore Roosevelt’s The Naval War of 1812. THE DECLINE AND FALL OF THE ROMAN EMPIRE (ABRIDGED) Edward Gibbon’s masterpiece, which narrates the history of the Roman Empire from the second to the fifteenth centuries, is widely considered the greatest work of history ever written. This abridgment retains the full scope of the original, while emphasizing elements ignored in all other abridgments—in particular the role of religion in the empire and the rise of Islam. MONTCALM AND WOLFE The result of more than forty years of passionate research, Montcalm and Wolfe is the epic story of Europe’s struggle for dominance of the New World. Thought by many to be Francis Parkman’s greatest work, it is a riveting read and an essential part of any military history collection. HISTORY OF THE CONQUEST OF MEXICO William H. Prescott’s sweeping account of Cortés’s subjugation of the Aztec people has endured as a landmark work of scholarship and dramatic storytelling. This pioneering study presents a compelling view of the clash of civilizations that reverberates in Latin America to this day. THE NAVAL WAR OF 1812 Published when its author, Theodore Roosevelt, was only twenty-three years old, The Naval War of 1812 was immediately hailed as a literary and scholarly triumph, and it is still considered the definitive book on the subject. Roosevelt’s inimitable style and robust narrative make The Naval War of 1812 enthralling, illuminating, and utterly essential to every armchair historian.
