Download or read book Frank Merriwell s Lads Or the Boys Who Got Another Chance Classic Reprint written by Burt L. Standish and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-08-21 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Frank Merriwell's Lads, or the Boys Who Got Another Chance Wendell had forced a careless smile and assured him that he did understand perfectly. Not for the world would he have shown any of the fellows how hard hit he was at the blow which had come so unexpectedly. He would take his medicine without whimpering, if only to disappoint the fellows who would have been far too glad to see him shamed and humiliated. Yes, he' understood - perfectly. He was a fool not to have expected it and been on the lookout for a move of this sort. He might have known that it would come sooner or later. Phillips had never liked him, even at the start, and the feud between himself and Don Shasta, the quarter back, one of the captain's closest friends, rapidly widened the breach. Book Frank Merriwell at Yale

Download or read book Frank Merriwell at Yale written by Burt L. Standish and published by Wildside Press LLC. This book was released on 2008-01-01 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Frank Merriwell was the fictional creation of Gilbert Patten, who wrote under the pseudonym Burt L. Standish. The model for all later American juvenile sports fiction, Merriwell excelled at football, baseball, crew, and track at Yale while solving mysteries and righting wrongs. He played with great strength and received traumatic blows without injury. A biographical entry on Patten noted that Frank Merriwell "had little in common with his creator or his readers." Patten offered some background on his character: "The name was symbolic of the chief characteristics I desired my hero to have. Frank for frankness, merry for a happy disposition, well for health and abounding vitality." Merriwell's classmates observed, "He never drinks. That's how he keeps himself in such fine condition all the time. He will not smoke, either, and he takes his exercise regularly. He is really a remarkable freshie." Merriwell originally appeared in a series of magazine stories starting April 18, 1896 ("Frank Merriwell: or, First Days at Fardale") in Tip Top Weekly, continuing through 1912, and later in dime novels and comic books. Patten would confine himself to a hotel room for a week to write an entire story.

The five novels in this unique anthology are classic examples of the form, which encompassed Westerns, early science fiction, detective and mystery yarns, and Revolutionary War historicals. From the handsome gambler "Dashing Diamond Dick" and the daring inventor in "Over the Andes with Frank Reade, Jr., in His New Air-Ship" to the mythic baseball player in "Frank Merriwell's Finish," here are some of the most valiant heroes and notorious rogues in the pantheon. Read together, these novels are fascinating time capsules from a young nation in love with its larger-than-life characters.
