Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Frank Merriwell's Champions Ping! pang! crash! Frank Merriwell, making a sharp turn in a narrow mountain path, felt his bicycle strike something which gave under his weight with a snapping, musical sound, and almost precipitated him ever the handle bars of his machine. Bart Hodge, who was close behind, checked himself with difficulty, and sang out: "What's wrong, Frank?" "Smashed a music box, I guess," answered Frank, leaping down and coming back. In single file behind Frank Merriwell and his chum, Bart Hodge, came the other members of the bicycle party - fat and lazy Bruce Browning; the gallant Virginian, Jack Diamond; merry-hearted Harry Rattleton; the Yankee youth, Ephraim Gallup; the Dutch boy, Hans Dunnerwust; the lad with Irish blood in his veins and a brogue to boot, Barney Mulloy, and Toots, the colored boy, who when at home worked around the Merriwell homestead. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Frank Merriwell Down South The man who lay on a bed of grass in one corner of the wretched adobe hut turned a reproachful look on the little professor. Book Frank Merriwell s Secret Classic Reprint

Download or read book Frank Merriwell s Secret Classic Reprint written by Burt L. Standish and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-14 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Frank Merriwell's Secret Frank Merriwell, the all-round athlete of Yale, whose integrity and honest endeavor in the path of right and justice had made for him a host of friends, and as many enemies, had become involved in "an affair of the heart." So far as Merriwell was concerned, it had been brought about entirely unwittingly. It is a very fine thing for a young man to stop a runaway horse and save the life of a young girl - that's what Merriwell did. But when the young girl afterward sets the young man up as "her hero," complications are likely to follow - that's what Winnie Lee did. And then Inza Burrage came to New Haven for a visit. Frank and Inza had been friends at Fardale when Frank was a student at the military academy. Frank had told Winnie all about Inza, and their friendship. At first Winnie had been jealous, but she had put this feeling aside until Inza herself put in an appearance at New Haven. Then, when Inza had gone away, and the boys had pronounced her a "peach," and spoke of her as Merry's "best girl," all her old jealousy returned, and she resolved to use her arts to "cut out" Inza. Immediately Winnie seemed to forget there was such a person in the world as Frank Merriwell, and she took care to bestow her sweetest smiles on the very fellows Merry most disliked. Book Frank Merriwell and the Fiction of All American Boyhood

Download or read book Frank Merriwell and the Fiction of All American Boyhood written by Ryan K. Anderson and published by University of Arkansas Press. This book was released on 2015-09-25 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gilbert Patten, writing as Burt L. Standish, made a career of generating serialized twenty-thousand-word stories featuring his fictional creation Frank Merriwell, a student athlete at Yale University who inspired others to emulate his example of manly boyhood. Patten and his publisher, Street and Smith, initially had only a general idea about what would constitute Merriwell’s adventures and who would want to read about them when they introduced the hero in the dime novel Tip Top Weekly in 1896, but over the years what took shape was a story line that capitalized on middle-class fears about the insidious influence of modern life on the nation’s boys. Merriwell came to symbolize the Progressive Era debate about how sport and school made boys into men. The saga featured the attractive Merriwell distinguishing between “good” and “bad” girls and focused on his squeaky-clean adventures in physical development and mentorship. By the serial’s conclusion, Merriwell had opened a school for “weak and wayward boys” that made him into a figure who taught readers how to approximate his example. In Frank Merriwell and the Fiction of All-American Boyhood, Anderson treats Tip Top Weekly as a historical artifact, supplementing his reading of its text, illustrations, reader letters, and advertisements with his use of editorial correspondence, memoirs, trade journals, and legal documents. Anderson blends social and cultural history, with the history of business, gender, and sport, along with a general examination of childhood and youth in this fascinating study of how a fictional character was used to promote a homogeneous “normal” American boyhood rooted in an assumed pecking order of class, race, and gender.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Frank Merriwell's Skill These words came from neither the barefooted boy nor the man who was maltreating him. They were spoken by a tall, gawky, country - looking young fellow dressed in a bicycle suit, who had just issued from a hotel in Fort Worth, Texas, and thus, by accident, came upon the struggle that was taking place before the door. Ou the veranda in front of the hotel sat a young man who was laughing as if greatly amused by the struggles and cries of the unfortunate boy. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Frank Merriwell's False Friend: A Story for Boys He was needed at Yale, for he had been chosen captain of the baseball-team, and the men were in training for the Easter trip to the South. His absence and the uncertainty of his return seemed to have a most baleful influence upon them, for they failed to turn out with enthusiasm for work in the cage, and they plainly lacked the needed spirit that year after year has led Yale gladiators to stand ready to sacrifice anything and everything, but honor, for the glory of Old Eli. This book was released on 2017-12-20 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Frank Merriwell's Lads, or the Boys Who Got Another Chance Wendell had forced a careless smile and assured him that he did understand perfectly. Not for the world would he have shown any of the fellows how hard hit he was at the blow which had come so unexpectedly. He would take his medicine without whimpering, if only to disappoint the fellows who would have been far too glad to see him shamed and humiliated. Yes, he' understood - perfectly. He was a fool not to have expected it and been on the lookout for a move of this sort. He might have known that it would come sooner or later. Phillips had never liked him, even at the start, and the feud between himself and Don Shasta, the quarter back, one of the captain's closest friends, rapidly widened the breach.
