Book Frank Lloyd Wright Historic American Buildings Survey

Download or read book Frank Lloyd Wright Historic American Buildings Survey written by Marc Rochkind and published by . This book was released on 2012-05-24 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Historic American Buildings Survey (HABS) was started in 1933 as one of the New Deal make-work programs, to employ jobless architects, draftspeople, and photographers. Its purpose is to document the nation's architectural heritage, especially those buildings that are in danger of ruin or deliberate destruction. Today, the HABS is part of the National Park Service and its repository is in the Library of Congress, much of which is available online at loc.gov.Of the tens of thousands HABS buildings, I found 44 Frank Lloyd Wright designs that have been digitized. Each HABS survey includes photographs and/or drawings and/or a report. I've included here what the Library of Congress had-sometimes all three, sometimes two of the three, and sometimes just one. There might be a single photo or drawing, or, such as in the case of Florida Southern College (in volume two), over a hundred. While all of the documents in this book are on the Library of Congress website, they're inconvenient to access. It's time consuming to download the drawings as PDFs, which is what you have to do if you want to see their detail. The reports are separate PDFs, too. But I've done all that for you here, and even turned the drawings on their side so that they fill the page. The photographic reproduction isn't as good as it would be with a more expensive production process, but then each volume would cost at least twice what it does.None of the text in this book other than this introduction is from me. The photo captions are verbatim from the Library of Congress, and all of the documents are shown without alteration, except that I adjusted the brightness and contrast of a few of the photos and converted the few color photos to B&W. No photos were cropped or straightened, and I've retained the negative edges. A few reports that have only one page that says "Photographs" or "Drawings" have been left out, as they contain no useful information.CONTENTS OF VOLUME 1 (this volume)American System-Built HomesAuldbrassEmil Bach HouseBarnsdall ParkBarnsdall Park - Hollyhock HouseBarnsdall Park - Residence ABeth Sholom SynagogueF. Download or read book Frank Lloyd Wright s Fallingwater written by Catherine W Zipf and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-12-30 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New Deal Book Award 2022 Honourable Mention Frank Lloyd Wright’s Fallingwater explores the relationship between the economic tumult in the United States in the 1930s, Frank Lloyd Wright, and the construction of his most famous house, Fallingwater. The book reinterprets the history of this iconic building, recognizing it as a Depression-era monument that stands as a testimony to what an American architect could achieve with the right site, client, and circumstance, even in desperate economic circumstances. Using newly available resources, author Catherine W. Zipf examines Wright’s work before and after Fallingwater to show how it was influenced by the economic climate, public architectural projects of the Great Depression, and America’s changing relationship with Modernist style and technology. Including over 50 black-and-white images, this book will be of great interest to students, historians, and researchers of art, architecture, and Frank Lloyd Wright.

Book The Georgia Catalog Historic American Buildings Survey

Download or read book The Georgia Catalog Historic American Buildings Survey written by John Linley and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 1982 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the elegant townhouses of Savannah to the towering hotel and office complexes of Atlanta, the state of Georgia has a distinguished architectural tradition. No other work documents this rich heritage as comprehensively as The Georgia Catalog. Prepared under the auspices of the Historic American Buildings Survey, this carefully researched and beautifully illustrated volume will be an invaluable resource for architects, preservationists, historians, and those who own the historic houses or who simply are interested in Georgia’s architectural legacy. The book is in two parts. The first is a history of and guide to the architecture of the state. John Linley begins his survey with the remains of prehistoric civilization and the architecture of the first European settlers. He traces the development of a native architecture in the state, the flowering of the Greek Revival style, the functional architecture of commerce and industry, and the energy and imagination of urban architecture in the late twentieth century. The text reflects the author’s interest in the rationale and logic that produced the architecture and in the lessons that the past has for the present and the future. He also emphasizes the influence of climate, ecology, landscape, and city planning on both historic and contemporary architecture. The second section of The Georgia Catalog is a complete, updated listing of nearly four hundred sites in the Historic American Buildings Survey. Each entry gives the precise location of the site; a brief description of the structure; the date of construction and the name of the architect, if known; changes in name structure, or location of the building; its present condition; any facts of historical significance; and the number and dates of drawings, photographs, and data sheets in the HABS collection at the Library of Congress. To add to its value as a guide, the volume also includes a glossary of architectural terms and a list of Georgia properties that are included in the National Register of Historic Places, have been designated National Landmarks, or are part of the Historic American Engineering Record.
