Book excerpt: Frank Hamilton Cushing's stay at Zu_i pueblo from 1879 to 1884 made him the first professional anthropologist actually to live with his subjects. Learning the language and winning acceptance as a member not only of the tribe but of the tribal council and the Bow Priesthood, he was the original participant observer and the only man in history to hold the double title of "1st War Chief of Zu_i, U. S. Ass't Ethnologist." A pioneer in southwestern ethnology, he combined the discipline of science with a remarkable imaginative capacity for identifying with Indian modes of thought and perception?and corresponding gifts of expression.

This book was released on 2002-10-01 with total page 391 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the fall of 1886, Boston philanthropist Mary Tileston Hemenway sponsored an archaeological expedition to the American Southwest. Directed by anthropologist Frank Hamilton Cushing, the Hemenway Expedition sought to trace the ancestors of the Zuñis with an eye toward establishing a museum for the study of American Indians. In the third year of fieldwork, Hemenway's overseeing board fired Cushing based on doubts concerning his physical health and mental stability, and much of the expedition's work went unpublished. Today, however, it is recognized as a critical base for research into southwestern prehistory. This second installment of a multivolume work on the Hemenway Expedition focuses on a report written by Cushing—at the request of the expedition's board of directors—to serve as vindication for the expedition, the worst personal and professional failure of his life. Reconstructed between 1891 and 1893 by Cushing from field notes, diaries, jottings, and memories, it provides an account of the origins and early months of the expedition. Hidden in several archives for a century, the Itinerary is assembled and presented here for the first time. A vivid account of the first attempt at scientific excavatons in the Southwest, Cushing's Itinerary is both an exciting tale of travel through the region and an intellectual adventure story that sheds important light on the human past at Hohokam sites in Arizona's Salt River Valley, where Cushing sought to prove his hypothesis concerning the ancestral "Lost Ones" of the Zuñis. It initiates the construction of an ethnological approach to archaeology, which drew upon an unprecedented knowledge of a southwestern Pueblo tribe and use of that knowledge in the interpretation of archaeological sites.

Book The Music of Hamilton Joe Frank Reynolds

Download or read book The Music of Hamilton Joe Frank Reynolds written by Robert Reynolds and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2016-07-28 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the mid-60s, a group of studio musicians turned an Alka-Seltzer commercial into a novelty hit, "No Matter What Shape (Your Stomach's In)". Unwilling to go on the road to promote it, a new group was formed by Dan Hamilton, Joe Frank Carollo and Tommy Reynolds, who were then credited with the song. When its popularity waned, the three formed a new group using the name "Hamilton, Joe Frank & Reynolds." Their first record resulted in the hit song "Don't Pull Your Love," and earned a Gold record, Reynolds unexpectedly left the band. Soon Hamilton, Carollo and Alan Dennison signed a contract with Playboy Records, with the stipulation they keep their original band name. They struck gold again with their first record for Playboy, "Fallin' In Love." It was Playboy's only #1 pop hit. This is the story about how this great soft rock group came to be. It looks carefully at the group's entire music legacy and explores previously unreleased songs that were discovered during research for the book.

Book Trials of the Earth

Download or read book Trials of the Earth written by Mary Mann Hamilton and published by Hachette+ORM. This book was released on 2017-12-05 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The astonishing first-person account of Mississippi pioneer woman struggling to survive, protect her family, and make a home in the early American South. Near the end of her life, Mary Mann Hamilton (1866 - c.1936) began recording her experiences in the backwoods of the Mississippi Delta. The result is this astonishing first-person account of a pioneer woman who braved grueling work, profound tragedy, and a pitiless wilderness (she and her family faced floods, tornadoes, fires, bears, panthers, and snakes) to protect her home in the early American South. An early draft of Trials of the Earth was submitted to a writers' competition sponsored by Little, Brown in 1933. It didn't win, and we almost lost the chance to bring this raw, vivid narrative to readers. Eighty-three years later, in partnership with Mary Mann Hamilton's descendants, we're proud to share this irreplaceable piece of American history. Written in spare, rich prose, Trials of the Earth is a precious record of one woman's extraordinary endurance and courage that will resonate with readers of history and fiction alike.

Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER Before Gabrielle Hamilton opened her acclaimed New York restaurant Prune, she spent twenty hard-living years trying to find purpose and meaning in her life. Blood, Bones & Butter follows an unconventional journey through the many kitchens Hamilton has inhabited through the years: the rural kitchen of her childhood, where her adored mother stood over the six-burner with an oily wooden spoon in hand; the kitchens of France, Greece, and Turkey, where she was often fed by complete strangers and learned the essence of hospitality; Hamilton’s own kitchen at Prune, with its many unexpected challenges; and the kitchen of her Italian mother-in-law, who serves as the link between Hamilton’s idyllic past and her own future family—the result of a prickly marriage that nonetheless yields lasting dividends. By turns epic and intimate, Gabrielle Hamilton’s story is told with uncommon honesty, grit, humor, and passion.
