Download or read book The Last British Bullfighter written by Frank Evans and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2010-01-13 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Last British Bullfighter tells the astonishing story of Frank Evans, the only recognised British matador. The son of a Salford butcher, his dream began after he'd saved enough money to attend a wedding in Spain. He was so entranced by life there that he remained, earning a living as a waiter before finally getting his first chance to enter the arena in 1966 as a rookie matador in the closed world of Franco's Spain. Frank went on to gain the widespread admiration of his fellow matador, critics and audiences, who nicknamed him 'El Ingles'. After four decades of blood, guts, passion and artistry (not to mention foot-long welts and a perforated buttok), he was forced to retire in 2005 with a shot knee and a failing heart. But retirement didn't suit Evans, despite being a successful businessman away from the ring, and so after a quadruple bypass and reconstructive knee surgery, he again donned his cape at the age of 65 and, incredibly, stepped back into the ring. He has vowed to stay there until he can no longer lift the sword. Evans has lived a colourful life in and out of the arena. The Last British Bullfighter is a fascinating insight into the sport, with its ritual, drama, protocol and politics, but it is also the story of a likely lad from Salford who ran away to fulfill a dream - a dream he is still living four decades later.
Download or read book American Witness written by RJ Smith and published by Da Capo Press. This book was released on 2017-11-07 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the author of the acclaimed James Brown biography The One comes the first in-depth biography of renowned photographer and filmmaker Robert Frank, best known for his landmark book The Americans. As well-known as Robert Frank the photographer is, few can say they really know Robert Frank the man. Born and raised in wartime Switzerland, Frank discovered the power and allure of photography at an early age and quickly learned that the art meant significantly more to him than the money, success, or fame. The art was all, and he intended to spend a lifetime pursuing it. American Witness is the first comprehensive look at the life of a man who's as mysterious and evasive as he is prolific and gifted. Leaving his rigid Switzerland for the more fluid United States in 1947, Frank found himself at the red-hot social center of bohemian New York in the '50s and '60s, becoming friends with everyone from Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg, and Peter Orlovsky to photographer Walker Evans, actor Zero Mostel, painter Willem de Kooning, filmmaker Jonas Mekas, Bob Dylan, writer Rudy Wirlitzer, jazz musicians Ornette Coleman and Charles Mingus, and more. Frank roamed the country with his young family, taking roughly 27,000 photographs and collecting 83 of them into what is still his most famous work: The Americans. His was an America nobody had seen before, and if it was harshly criticized upon publication for its portrait of a divided country, the collection gradually grew to be recognized as a transformative American vision. And then he turned his back on certain success, giving up photography to reinvent himself as a film and video maker. Frank helped found the American independent cinema of the 1960s and made a legendary film with the Rolling Stones. Today, the nonagenarian is an embodiment of restless creativity and a symbol of what it costs to remain original in America, his life defined by never repeating himself, never being satisfied. American Witness is a portrait of a singular artist and the country that he saw.

Download or read book Healthcare Reform and Interest Groups written by Dr. Frank Evans and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rural Australia has faced many economic and demographic disadvantages. Advances in medical technology and economic reforms have led to the closure or near closure of many rural hospitals. Since the late 1980s, the Australian government has increased their focus on the quality and functionality of rural health. Most notable was the development of a rural health strategy and the introduction of flexibly funded, integrated health services, otherwise known as Multipurpose Services (MPS). Healthcare Reform and Interests Groups explores the resistance that the MPSs encountered from rural health professionals and rural communities in Australia. The MPS program in Victoria provided an opportunity to review the response of structural interest groups when the status quo is challenged. Healthcare Reform and Interest Groups analyzes the development of the MPS program in Victoria, in particular the processes and outcomes associated with the development of an MPS in Corryong, a small town in Victoria. The study led to the testing of findings in other Victorian communities. The goal of the study was to understand why the Victorian MPS program, developed to help improve the distribution of rural health services, was met with such resistance. With interesting analysis of the power and conflict issues between rural general practictioners, the government, and healt bureaucrats, Healthcare Reform and Interest Groups examines the critical role of the community in Australia's healthcare reform.
Download or read book Ava Gardner written by Ava Gardner and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2013-07-02 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ava Gardner was one of the most glamorous and famous stars in Hollywood in the 1940s and 1950s. Her list of films includes The Killers, Showboat and Mogambo, for which she was nominated for an Academy Award for best actress, and her co-stars included Clark Gable, Gregory Peck, Burt Lancaster, Humphrey Bogart, Charlton Heston, and Richard Burton - the A-list of male Hollywood stars. Married three times - to Mickey Rooney, Artie Shaw, and Frank Sinatra - the first two lasted only about a year each whilst her marriage to Sinatra lasted several. She had a long-running affair with Howard Hughes, and a briefer one with George C. Scott, among others. In Ava Gardner, she has much to say about her husbands and lovers, and some of her co-stars,all of whom get Gardner's unflinchingly honest treatment. Ava Gardner is irresistibly candid and surprising. She began the book because, as she told Evans, 'it's either write the book or sell the jewels and I'm kinda fond of the jewels.' At the time of their collaboration Gardner was living in London, where she had lived for decades, smoking and drinking heavily. Having suffered a stroke that damaged the left side of her face and her left arm she had trouble sleeping and was often depressed - the glamorous wardrobes replaced by grey. Her story could itself have been depressing except for her wit and wickedness, which are on full display in this book. This book tells the story of her life as she wanted to tell it. Ava Gardner is the autobiography that Ava Gardner began with writer Peter Evans in 1988. She never finished it and decided against publishing it because of its frankness. She later collaborated on a tamer autobiography, which was published at her death in 1990. After Gardner's death, her estate authorised the book to be published much as she and Evans had originally conceived it.
Download or read book Valuation for M A written by Chris M. Mellen and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2018-04-16 with total page 459 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Determine a company's value, what drives it, and how to enhance value during a M&A Valuation for M&A lays out the steps for measuring and managing value creation in non-publicly traded entities, and helps investors, executives, and their advisors determine the optimum strategy to enhance both market value and strategic value and maximize return on investment. As a starting point in planning for a transaction, it is helpful to compute fair market value, which represents a “floor” value for the seller since it by definition represents a value agreed upon by any hypothetical willing and able buyer and seller. But for M&A, it is more important to compute investment value, which is the value of the target company to a strategic buyer (and which can vary with each prospective buyer). Prepare for the sale and acquisition of a firm Identify, quantify, and qualify the synergies that increase value to strategic buyers Get access to new chapters on fairness opinions and professional service firms Find a discussion of Roger Grabowski's writings on cost of capital, cross-border M&A, private cost of capital, intangible capital, and asset vs. stock transactions Inside, all the necessary tools you need to build and measure private company value is just a page away!
Download or read book Frank Aiken written by Bryce Evans and published by Merrion Press. This book was released on 2014-04-14 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Revolutionary; statesman; polymath: Frank Aiken cuts a colossal figure in twentieth century Irish history. However, he remains a controversial figure regarded as a war criminal by some and a principled proponent of National liberation by others. In this engaging biographical collection, contributors scrutinise Aiken s thoughts and actions at several critical junctures in modern Irish and world history, taking readers through the War of Independence, Civil War, the birth of the new state, the Second World War, the Cold War and the modern Northern Ireland Troubles. Divided into two sections Nationalist and Internationalist and based on an unrivalled breadth of testimony from academics, family members, rivals and colleagues, this study ultimately details the footprints Aiken left on the national and international political stage. Aiken owed his early eminence to military rather than political leadership; he was commandant of the 4th Northern Division of the IRA during the War of Independence and was driven to undertake the most daring and spectacular feats of the Irish Civil War. He went on to become the Chief of Staff of the Anti-Treaty IRA but was expelled for backing de Valera s plan for a Republican government the beginnings of Fianna Fáil. Thereafter his instrumental role was to be political: a Minister for Defence, Finance, and External Affairs over the course of the following decades; he was to oversee much success and controversy in the burgeoning state. This biography represents the first deserving assessment of a monumental personality in 20th century Irish History.

Book excerpt: A philosopher and an artist join hands in this book to reclaim philosophy as an art. Their book shows how patriarchal biases have infected formal logic, higher mathematics, and the scientific method. It demonstrates the harmful impact of these biases on women, gay people, artists, indigenous societies, and the natural environment. Among the many thinkers discussed is Ludwig Wittgenstein. A surprising connection is uncovered between Wittgenstein's theories of logic and language on one hand and his conflicted attitude toward his homosexuality on the other. -- adapted from back cover
