Book The Dawn of Dutch

Download or read book The Dawn of Dutch written by Michiel de Vaan and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2017-12-14 with total page 633 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Low Countries are famous for their radically changing landscape over the last 1,000 years. Like the landscape, the linguistic situation has also undergone major changes. In Holland, an early form of Frisian was spoken until, very roughly, 1100, and in parts of North Holland it disappeared even later. The hunt for traces of Frisian or Ingvaeonic in the dialects of the western Low Countries has been going on for around 150 years, but a synthesis of the available evidence has never appeared. The main aim of this book is to fill that gap. It follows the lead of many recent studies on the nature and effects of language contact situations in the past. The topic is approached from two different angles: Dutch dialectology, in all its geographic and diachronic variation, and comparative Germanic linguistics. In the end, the minute details and the bigger picture merge into one possible account of the early and high medieval processes that determined the make-up of western Dutch.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Discover eight remarkable women war photographers who have documented harrowing and unforgettable crises and combat around the world for the past eighty years. Women have been on the front lines of war for more than a century. With access to places men cannot go, the women who photograph war lend a unique perspective to the consequences of conflict. From intimate glimpses of daily life to the atrocities of war, this exhibition catalog reveals the range and depth of eight women photographers' contributions to wartime photojournalism. Each photographer is introduced by a brief, informative essay followed by reproductions of a selection of their works. Included here are images by Lee Miller, who documented the liberation of Dachau and Buchenwald. The first woman journalist to parachute into Vietnam, Catherine Leroy was on the ground during the Tet Offensive. Susan Meiselas raised international awareness around the Somoza regime's catastrophic effects in Nicaragua. German reporter Anja Niedringhaus worked on assignment in nearly every major conflict of the 1990s, from the Balkans to Libya, Iraq to Afghanistan. The work of Carolyn Cole, Françoise Demulder, Christine Spengler, and Gerda Taro round out this collective profile of courage under pressure and of humanity in the face of war.

Book excerpt: So what if you have talent? Then what? When John Waters delivered his gleefully subversive advice to the graduates of the Rhode Island School of Design, the speech went viral, in part because it was so brilliantly on point about making a living as a creative person. Now we can all enjoy his sly wisdom in a manifesto that reminds us, no matter what field we choose, to embrace chaos, be nosy, and outrage our critics. Anyone embarking on a creative path, he tells us, would do well to realize that pragmatism and discipline are as important as talent and that rejection is nothing to fear. Waters advises young people to eavesdrop, listen to their enemies, and horrify us with new ideas. In other words, MAKE TROUBLE! Illustrated with slightly demented line drawings by Eric Hanson, Make Trouble is a one-of-a-kind gift, the perfect playbook for gaming the system by making the system work for you.

Book F ck Y u

    Book Details:
  • Author : Rankin
  • Publisher :
  • Release : 2014

  • Pages : 0 pages

Download or read book F ck Y u written by Rankin and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Insults fly on every page of Rankin's forthcoming book. What a fucking rude bunch these celebrities are! 'Fuck You Rankin' collates Rankin's most iconic shots. Each portrait sees the famed photographer being given the one finger salute by some of his boldest subjects. The series of notoriously cheeky photographs, exclusive outtakes from a number of shoots, sees the likes of Katy Perry, Miley Cyrus, Robbie Williams and Heidi Klum (you know the shot) flipping the bird left, right and centre. And what is the relevance of this obscene Western hand gesture? Is it really that obscene? Well, history states that this very rude finger is a symbol of a handful of topics unsuitable for the dinner table. So, Rankin being Rankin, thought he'd curate a book of many famous middle fingers. How rude! Starring: Dizee Rascal, Cheryl Cole, Abbey Clancey, Damian Lewis, Damien Hirst, Katy Perry, Keith Richards, Miley Cyrus, Ray Winstone, Robbie Williams, Ronnie Wood and many more.
