Book Misadventures of a Civil War Submarine

Download or read book Misadventures of a Civil War Submarine written by James P. Delgado and published by Texas A&M University Press. This book was released on 2012-03-06 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2001, while vacationing on Panama’s Pacific coast, maritime archaeologist James P. Delgado came upon the hulk of a mysterious iron vessel, revealed by the ebbing tides in a small cove at Isla San Telmo. Local inquiries proved inconclusive: the wreck was described as everything from a sunken Japanese "suicide" submarine from World War II to a poison-laden "craft of death" that was responsible for the ruin of the pearl beds, decades before. His professional interest fully aroused, Delgado would go on to learn that the wreck was the remains of one of the first successful deep-diving submersibles, built in 1864 by Julius H. Kroehl, an innovator and entrepreneur who initially sought to develop his invention for military use during the Civil War. The craft’s completion coming too late for that conflict, Kroehl subsequently convinced investors that it could be used to harvest pearls from the Pacific beds off Panama, in waters too deep for native pearl divers to reach. In Misadventures of a Civil War Submarine, Delgado chronicles the confluence of technological advancement, entrepreneurial aspiration, American capitalist ambition, and ignorance of the physiological effects of deep diving. As he details the layers of knowledge uncovered by his work both in archival sources and in the field excavation of Kroehl’s ill-fated vessel, Delgado weaves the tangled threads of history into a compelling narrative. This finely crafted saga will fascinate and inform professional archaeologists and researchers, naval historians, students and aficionados of maritime exploration, and interested general readers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When hurricanes, earthquakes, wildfires, and other disasters strike, we count our losses, search for causes, commiserate with victims, and initiate relief efforts. Amply illustrated and expansively researched, Inventing Disaster explains the origins and development of this predictable, even ritualized, culture of calamity over three centuries, exploring its roots in the revolutions in science, information, and emotion that were part of the Age of Enlightenment in Europe and America. Beginning with the collapse of the early seventeenth-century Jamestown colony, ending with the deadly Johnstown flood of 1889, and highlighting fires, epidemics, earthquakes, and exploding steamboats along the way, Cynthia A. Kierner tells horrific stories of culturally significant calamities and their victims and charts efforts to explain, prevent, and relieve disaster-related losses. Although how we interpret and respond to disasters has changed in some ways since the nineteenth century, Kierner demonstrates that, for better or worse, the intellectual, economic, and political environments of earlier eras forged our own twenty-first-century approach to disaster, shaping the stories we tell, the precautions we ponder, and the remedies we prescribe for disaster-ravaged communities.

Book The Sea and Civilization

Download or read book The Sea and Civilization written by Lincoln Paine and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2015-10-27 with total page 802 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A monumental retelling of world history through the lens of the sea—revealing in breathtaking depth how people first came into contact with one another by ocean and river, lake and stream, and how goods, languages, religions, and entire cultures spread across and along the world’s waterways, bringing together civilizations and defining what makes us most human. The Sea and Civilization is a mesmerizing, rhapsodic narrative of maritime enterprise, from the origins of long-distance migration to the great seafaring cultures of antiquity; from Song Dynasty human-powered paddle-boats to aircraft carriers and container ships. Lincoln Paine takes the reader on an intellectual adventure casting the world in a new light, in which the sea reigns supreme. Above all, Paine makes clear how the rise and fall of civilizations can be linked to the sea. An accomplishment of both great sweep and illuminating detail, The Sea and Civilization is a stunning work of history.

Sail was made on the vessel and they got her safe into port; they took the Life-boat with them, and returned her again to the station as soon as possible, uninjured. The boat is spoken of as being a first-rato one, and were the boats provided with organized crews, it would be rare to hear of the loss of life, and much property would in consequence be saved. Respectfully, your obdt. seryt., (Signed, ) J. N. Schillinger. Wm. E. Knight, Boarding Officer, Balize. Balize Boarding Station, March 20th, 1852. To Joseph Francis, Esq., Respected Sir, --Agreeable to your request, respecting the peculiarities of your splended Metallic Boat, I beg leave very respectfully to report as follows: I take particular pleasure in informing you, that after giving her a fair trial, I feel proud to say, she answers every purpose for which she was intended. She pulls, tows and sails well, and in fact she is perfectly safe, just such a boat as we stood in need of; she is far superior to either of the other boats that have been sent out here. She has been much admired by those that call themselves good judges. I take pride in informing you that she is built very much to my entire satisfaction, as I feel assured she will answer every purpose for which she was intended. N. B. Dear sir, there is one thing I beg leave to call your particular atttention to: You have sent out 15 feet oars with the boat; the boat requires 11 feet oars, as we have a strong current of the old Mississippi to pull against; we find also that the mast and sail is also too small by one-half, but those things are nothing, as the boat's crew can very soon alter the above. Wishing you every success, I am truly, very respectfully, Your obdt. servt., Wm. R. Knight,

Book The U S Life Saving Service

Download or read book The U S Life Saving Service written by Ralph C. Shanks and published by Costano Books. This book was released on 1996 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Subtitled Heroes, Rescues and Architecture of the Early Coast Guard, this very complete record of the people, technology, architecture and exploits of the U.S. Life-Saving Service is a large-format book illustrated with 446 photographs and maps. It is especially strong on the wonderful and regionally varied architecture of the Service's stations, of which there were more than today's mariners or beachcombers can imagine -- 41 on the New Jersey coast, 31 on Lake Michigan, 13 on Cape Cod alone. In the last half of the nineteenth century, when coasting vessels numbered in the tens of thousands, the stations and their beach patrols were a necessity, and the surfmen managed dramatic rescues, many of which are recounted here.
