Book The Story of Greece and Rome

Download or read book The Story of Greece and Rome written by Antony Spawforth and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2018-01-01 with total page 403 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The extraordinary story of the intermingled civilizations of ancient Greece and Rome, spanning more than six millennia from the late Bronze Age to the seventh century The magnificent civilization created by the ancient Greeks and Romans is the greatest legacy of the classical world. However, narratives about the "civilized" Greek and Roman empires resisting the barbarians at the gate are far from accurate. Tony Spawforth, an esteemed scholar, author, and media contributor, follows the thread of civilization through more than six millennia of history. His story reveals that Greek and Roman civilization, to varying degrees, was supremely and surprisingly receptive to external influences, particularly from the East. From the rise of the Mycenaean world of the sixteenth century B.C., Spawforth traces a path through the ancient Aegean to the zenith of the Hellenic state and the rise of the Roman empire, the coming of Christianity and the consequences of the first caliphate. Deeply informed, provocative, and entirely fresh, this is the first and only accessible work that tells the extraordinary story of the classical world in its entirety.

Book The Greek Mesolithic

Download or read book The Greek Mesolithic written by Nena Galanidou and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book is the first major review of the Mesolithic age of Greece," writes Colin Renfrew "If the (Franchthi Cave publications) represent a first milestone in mesolithic studies in the Aegean, this volume certainly constitutes a second. It establishes a perspective going beyond that of the single key site, allowing earlier finds such as those from Sidari on Corfu to be re-assessed, and including more recent discoveries at the Theopetra Cave, at the Cave of Cyclope on Youra, and from the Klisoura Gorge. The book moreover develops a number of methodological advances, along with a careful review of the chronology. It embarks also upon detailed investigations of the fauna and microfauna."

Book Communities Landscapes and Interaction in Neolithic Greece

Download or read book Communities Landscapes and Interaction in Neolithic Greece written by Apostolos Sarris and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2018-08-17 with total page 512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The last three decades have witnessed a period of growing archaeological activity in Greece that have enhanced our awareness of the diversity and variability of ancient communities. New sites offer rich datasets from many aspects of material culture that challenge traditional perceptions and suggest complex interpretations of the past. This volume provides a synthetic overview of recent developments in the study of Neolithic Greece and reconsiders the dynamics of human-environment interactions while recording the growing diversity in layers of social organization. It fills an essential lacuna in contemporary literature and enhances our understanding of the Neolithic communities in the Greek Peninsula.

Book Palaeolithic and Mesolithic Sailors in the Aegean and the Near East

Download or read book Palaeolithic and Mesolithic Sailors in the Aegean and the Near East written by Adamantios Sampson and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2019-08-05 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Old theories for the origins of domesticated animals and plants from the East and the spread of farming and husbandry in Europe have affected generations of archaeologists, resulting in several theories of migrations of populations. However, there is no evidence in the archaeological record of population movements from the East, while so far the contribution of the pre-Neolithic populations of the Aegean has been neglected. This book shows that Mesolithic hunter-gatherers developed a dense maritime network on the Aegean islands and contributed to the Neolithisation process, transferring domesticated species from the East to the Aegean through Cyprus. Their great specialization in fishing and long journeys was due to a tradition that had roots in the Palaeolithic period. This text is based on practical experience from excavations and surface surveys over the past 25 years in Mesolithic and Neolithic sites in the Aegean Basin and continental Greece.
