Book Global Glam and Popular Music

Download or read book Global Glam and Popular Music written by Ian Chapman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-02-12 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first to explore style and spectacle in glam popular music performance from the 1970s to the present day, and from an international perspective. Focus is given to a number of representative artists, bands, and movements, as well as national, regional, and cultural contexts from around the globe. Approaching glam music performance and style broadly, and using the glam/glitter rock genre of the early 1970s as a foundation for case studies and comparisons, the volume engages with subjects that help in defining the glam phenomenon in its many manifestations and contexts. Glam rock, in its original, term-defining inception, had its birth in the UK in 1970/71, and featured at its forefront acts such as David Bowie, T. Rex, Slade, and Roxy Music. Termed "glitter rock" in the US, stateside artists included Alice Cooper, Suzi Quatro, The New York Dolls, and Kiss. In a global context, glam is represented in many other cultures, where the influences of early glam rock can be seen clearly. In this book, glam exists at the intersections of glam rock and other styles (e.g., punk, metal, disco, goth). Its performers are characterized by their flamboyant and theatrical appearance (clothes, costumes, makeup, hairstyles), they often challenge gender stereotypes and sexuality (androgyny), and they create spectacle in popular music performance, fandom, and fashion. The essays in this collection comprise theoretically-informed contributions that address the diversity of the world’s popular music via artists, bands, and movements, with special attention given to the ways glam has been influential not only as a music genre, but also in fashion, design, and other visual culture.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the face of unparalleled growth and a truly global audience, the popularity of contemporary art has clearly become a double-edged affair. Today, an unprecedented number of museums, galleries, biennial-style exhibitions, and art fairs display new work in all its variety, while art schools continue to inject fresh talent onto the scene at an accelerated rate. In the process, however, contemporary art has become deeply embedded not only in an expanding art industry, but also the larger cultures of fashion and entertainment. Buskirk argues that understanding the dynamics of art itself cannot be separated from the business of presenting art to the public. As strategies of institutional critique have given way to various forms of collaboration or accommodation, both art and museum conventions have been profoundly altered by their ongoing relationship. The escalating market for contemporary art is another driving force. Even as art remains an idealized activity, it is also understood as a profession, and in increasingly obvious ways a business, particularly as practiced by star artists who preside over branded art product lines.

Book excerpt: In light of a large selection of previously unpublished personal archives - documents, photographs and films - this title explores Picasso's 'Olga period' by contextualising his work during this period and by questioning the contrast between the subject and its portrayal. A favourite model since their meeting in 1917, Olga Khokhlova, a Russian ballet dancer who married Picasso in July 1918, is the most represented female figure in the artist's work of the late 1910s and 1920s. Picasso renders the ambiguity of his first wife, her beauty, her Ingres-like contours, and her deep, pensive, melancholy, in many of his most famous portraits. The exhibition that this book accompanies brings to light materials conserved by Olga's family until recently, including memorabilia of her life as a dancer, photos of Picasso, their son Paul, and their daily life together, and their travels to Barcelona, Naples, and Monte Carlo. AUTHORS: Emilia Philippot is curator for Picasso Museum of Paris. Joachim Pissarro is an art historian, curator and director of Hunter College art galleries. Bernard Ruiz-Picasso is co-founder of Foundacion Almine y Bernard Ruiz-Picasso para el Arte (FABA). Book excerpt: Paradise Atop the Hudson revisits a time when life was simpler, albeit the definitive baptism under fire for the novel's saintly protagonist, Adam Sean Furano, whose life is turned upside-down after he is ferociously bullied after being set up by a friend who is envious of his loving family. The fictional work is set in Fairview, New Jersey (a small town located directly across from Manhattan) during the late 1960s and early 1970s, and lovingly recreates a community known for the closeness of its residents and year-long events, including the San Paolino Italian Feast, the Firemen's Bazaar, parades, fireworks, and a remarkable community fabric that brings together so many families and individuals via the churches, schools, eateries, entertainment venues, sporting leagues, Scout troops, local mischief, the town library and stores. The novel further examines the era through the period's popular music, movies, television shows and sports, and there is a constant interplay between good and evil, emboldened by the use of Catholic symbolism. Though the novel's main characters and many events are fictional, some supporting characters are real-life and are identified, and at the end of the story, a massive "Who's Who?"-styled acknowledgment appendix pays tribute to past and present residents of Fairview and Cliffside Park, as well as many other authors, bloggers and online friends of the writer who have impacted him in various ways. A section on those residents who have passed on far too young, and a section of names completes this homage to a special place, where growing up was a privilege. The novel's critical occurrence takes place at Palisades Amusement Park in Cliffside Park.

Book Crafting Textiles in the Digital Age

Download or read book Crafting Textiles in the Digital Age written by Nithikul Nimkulrat and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2016-09-08 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In an era of increasingly available digital resources, many textile designers and makers find themselves at an interesting juncture between traditional craft processes and newer digital technologies. Highly specialized craft/design practitioners may now elect to make use of digital processes in their work, but often choose not to abandon craft skills fundamental to their practice, and aim to balance the complex connection between craft and digital processes. The essays collected here consider this transition from the viewpoint of aesthetic opportunity arising in the textile designer's hands-on experimentation with material and digital technologies available in the present. Craft provides the foundations for thinking within the design and production of textiles, and as such may provide some clues in the transition to creative and thoughtful use of current and future digital technologies. Within the framework of current challenges relating to sustainable development, globalization, and economic constraints it is important to interrogate and question how we might go about using established and emerging technologies in textiles in a positive manner.

Authors David Carrier and Joachim Pissarro have studied alternative and underground art cultures for years. Here, they've compiled the ultimate collection of creative works that celebrate the beauty and art in anything and everything, challenging the reader's perception of what is and what isn't art.
