Book excerpt: Excerpt from Frances Mary Buss, and Her Work for Education In a life written by a friend for friends there must of necessity be more of the intimacy of private friendship than in a record written dispassionately for an unknown public. The world in general knows Frances Mary Buss as a public worker - capable, energetic, successful. By her friends she was loved as one of the most womanly of women - true, and tender, and loyal. Her work, to which all women of this generation owe so much, must assume prominence in the story of her life; but what is most desired is to show her as she was to her friends. Book excerpt: Frances Mary Buss, who began her teaching career at fourteen, was only twenty-three when she founded the North London Collegiate School, the forerunner and model of Girls’ High Schools throughout the country. Her friend Dorothea Beale was for nearly fifty years Principal of Cheltenham Ladies College, which she changed from an insignificant local school into a school and college with a comprehensive teacher training department and with upwards of a thousand pupils. She was also the founder of St.Hilda’s College, Oxford. Imbued with strong religious principles and endowed with immense energy and industry, the two women exercised a powerful influence on the development of women’s education in Britain. Yet both had to contend with bitter opposition and disillusionment. This is the first joint biography of Miss Buss and Miss Beale and it gives a fascinating comparison of their methods and widely differing characters. The author had access to hitherto unpublished material, and gathered information from pupils of both schools and from others who knew the two headmistresses, ensuring that the book, whilst full of anecdotes, is also authoritative.

Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1896 edition. Excerpt: ... VII FAMILY LOVE By many brothers their sisters are scarcely less loved and trusted than their wives. Mary Lyon was all that a true sister should be. Her presence amongst her brothers and sisters was like that of a ministering spirit. Her going forth from them left sadness and tears behind. Her return caused joy and gladness. Every girl who desires to become a good woman must begin by being a good daughter and a good sister. The want of knowledge of these duties, and not acting upon the knowledge, will show itself in later life. Consider the sister whose indifference to her brother's feelings causes him to find pleasures away from home. She does not dream that she has duties to him. She is perhaps vain, trifling, ignorant, idle, careless in her dress, because "only Tom is at. home." He naturally concludes that all girls are like the one that he knows best, a conclusion which destroys his respect for all girls and women. If she has not sufficient love for her brother, interest in his pursuits, his happiness, and his success, to make her willing to exercise some selfdenial for his sake, surely we are justified in saying, "She will not have sufficient interest in the welfare of others to take much trouble on their behalf. Her failure as a sister at home foretells her failure as a woman." John Angell James says: "Every woman, whether rich or poor, married or single, has a circle of influence, within which, according to her character, she is exerting a certain amount of power for good or evil. Every woman, by her folly or by her wisdom, is adding something to our national elevation or degradation. To a certain extent women are the preservers of a nation's welfare. A community is not likely to be overthrown where woman fulfils her mission (i.e....

Book How Different from Us a Biography of Miss Buss Miss Beale

Download or read book How Different from Us a Biography of Miss Buss Miss Beale written by Josephine Kamm and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book The Reform of Girls Secondary and Higher Education in Victorian England

Download or read book The Reform of Girls Secondary and Higher Education in Victorian England written by Joyce Senders Pedersen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-12-15 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1987, this title was first submitted as a doctoral dissertation at the University of California, Berkeley in 1974. Completed just as the years of expansion in higher education were drawing to a close, it reflects the growing doubts of the period as to the ability of formal education provision alone to effect major changes in the distribution of socio-economic privilege at the group level, whether as between the sexes, classes, or ethnic groups. Reforms in women’s education had traditionally been dealt with as a small part of the women’s emancipation movement. This book approaches the education reforms in a different way and begins with the question of which social groups participated in the movement. Seen from this point of view, a primary interest of the reforms is the function they served in promoting a redefinition of the status and roles of a social elite.

Book The Victorian Girl and the Feminine Ideal

Download or read book The Victorian Girl and the Feminine Ideal written by Deborah Gorham and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-10-09 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Victorian England, the perception of girlhood arose not in isolation, but as one manifestation of the prevailing conception of femininity. Examining the assumptions that underlay the education and upbringing of middle-class girls, this book is also a study of the learning of gender roles in theory and reality. It was originally published in 1982. The first two sections examine the image of women in the Victorian family, and the advice offered in printed sources on the rearing of daughters during the Victorian period. To illustrate the effect and evolution of feminine ideals over the Victorian period, the book’s final section presents the actual experiences of several middle-class Victorian women who represent three generations and range, socioeconomically, from lower-middle class through upper-middle class.
