Download or read book Exploring Language in a Multilingual Context written by Bettina Migge and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2013 with total page 373 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Proposing a new methodological approach to documenting languages spoken in multilingual societies, this book retraces the investigation of one unique linguistic space, the Creole varieties referred to as Takitaki in multilingual French Guiana. It illustrates how interactional sociolinguistic, anthropological linguistic, discourse analytical and quantitative sociolinguistic approaches can be integrated with structural approaches to language in order to resolve rarely discussed questions systematically (what are the outlines of the community, who is a rightful speaker, what speech should be documented) that frequently crop up in projects of language documentation in multilingual contexts. The authors argue that comprehensively documenting complex linguistic phenomena requires taking into account the views of all local social actors (native and non native speakers, institutions, linguists, non-speakers etc.), applying a range of complementary data collection and analysis methods and putting issues of ideology, variation, language contact and interaction centre stage. This book will be welcomed by researchers in sociolinguistics, linguistic anthropology, fieldwork studies, language documentation and language variation and change.

Download or read book Language Change and Language Contact in Pidgins and Creoles written by John H. McWhorter and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2000 with total page 518 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book collects a selection of fifteen papers presented at three meetings of the Society for Pidgin and Creole Linguistics in 1996 and 1997. The focus is on papers which approach issues in creole studies with novel perspectives, address understudied pidgin and creole varieties, or compellingly argue for controversial positions. The papers demonstrate how pidgins and creoles shed light on issues such as verb movement, contact-induced language change and its gradations, discourse management via tense-aspect particles, language genesis, substratal transfer, and Universal Grammar, and cover a wide range of contact languages, ranging from English- and French-based creoles through Portuguese creoles of Africa and Asia, Sango, Popular Brazilian Portuguese, West African Pidgin Englishes, and Hawaiian Creole English.

Download or read book Decolonizing Translation written by Kathryn Batchelor and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-04-08 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The linguistically innovative aspect of Francophone African literature has been recognized and studied from a variety of angles over recent decades, yet little attention has been paid to what happens to such literature when it is translated into another language. Taking as its corpus all sub-Saharan Francophone African texts that have ever been published in English, this book explores the ways in which translators approach innovative features such as African-language borrowings, neologisms and other deliberate manipulations of French, depictions of sociolinguistic variation, and a variety of types of wordplay. The implications of their translation decisions are drawn out with reference to the broader significances that are often accorded to postcolonial literature, and earlier critics' calls for a decolonized translation practice are explored from both a practical and theoretical angle. These findings are used to push towards a detailed investigation of the postcolonial turn in translation studies, drawing on the work of key postcolonial theorists such has Homi K. Bhabha and Gayatri Spivak. This is a timely and incisive critical assessment of contemporary discourses on the ethics and politics of translation.

Download or read book A reader in French sociolinguistics written by M. H. Offord and published by Multilingual Matters. This book was released on 1996 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings together twenty-eight important extracts relating to French sociolinguistics. It is divided into four sections: the French language in France today, linguistic diversity in France, French outside France, and French and gender. The extracts have been drawn from a host of sources and have been selected to illustrate a wide range of attitudes and approaches to the role of French in France and elsewhere in the world. Government decrees and circulars, historical analyses, descriptions by contemporary sociolinguistics in Europe and further afield, and documents produced by organisations which exist to protect the French language all appear. The emphasis of the book is upon objective assessment, but also included are official statements and more stridently chauvinistic appraisals. Certain themes occur - particularly the perennial rivalry between English and French, as well as concern that French is losing its influence in many parts of the world and that it is escaping the authoritarian control that used to be exercised on it. A more recent concern is the charge that French is essentially a sexist language to which speakers need to be more and more sensitised.

Download or read book 2000 ans de rire written by Mongi Madini and published by Presses Univ. Franche-Comté. This book was released on 2002 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Download or read book Les langues r gionales de France written by Philippe Blanchet and published by Peeters Publishers. This book was released on 1999 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
