Book The French Assault on American Shipping 1793 1813

Download or read book The French Assault on American Shipping 1793 1813 written by Greg H. Williams and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2009-10-21 with total page 543 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic eras, France was plagued by war and crop failures and was desperately in need of supplies. Legally and illegally, French privateers and cruisers took cargo from merchant vessels of every nation, perhaps the United States more than any other. At least 6,479 U.S. claims involving more than 2,300 vessels were filed and these claims give a close approximation of American goods lost to the French. The three main sections of this reference book present a comprehensive accounting of the losses (arranged by ship), descriptions of court cases involving important questions of law, and the disposition of claims. Also included are a glossary, a list of geographical locations mentioned in the text, and an overview of relevant acts of Congress, proclamations, treaties, and foreign decrees.

Download or read book The Merchant Marines of the United States England France and Japan 1900 1912 Classic Reprint written by Frank Bonner Leonard Jr and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-12 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Merchant Marines of the United States, England, France, and Japan, 1900-1912 The American traveller from the United States in Europe or in South America today is noted because of his pride in his country and everything American, and it is often a grievous blow to that pride to note, as he gazes on the forest of masts and the many flags that fly over the ships in the ports of these countries, the absence of the stars and stripes. And this is true not only of Europe, but also of the great American ports of New York, Philadelphia or Boston. So strong has grown the feeling on this subject that both houses of Congress have had since 1904 a merchant marine commis sion investigating conditions and advising as to what may be done to rebuild our foreign merchant marine. It has been generally agreed that if this is done at once, government aid must be invoked, and in this connection that ob noxious word subsidy is most often used. In order to make clear the meaning of some of the common terms that will crop up all through a discussion of this kind, it may be well to define a few of them. A subsidy is any form of government aid given to ship building or ship Operating interests. A postal subvention is money paid to a ship company partly for services rendered in carrying the mails, partly for speed or other conditions, and partly as pure subsidy or aid. Book Forests and French Sea Power 1660 1789

Download or read book Forests and French Sea Power 1660 1789 written by Paul Bamford and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 1956-12-15 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By choosing to concentrate upon discovering what forest resources were available to the French navy during the ancien régime and what use it was able to make of them, Mr. Bamford has not only provided the first monograph on that subject in the English language, but has gone far toward explaining why France was the loser in the long duel with England for the control of commerce and the extension of empire. Two years of research in the Archives Nationales and in the Archives de la Marine in Paris, Toulon, and Rochefort enabled him to draw on contemporary sources of information of which little, if any, use has been made before, and a further year of research in the libraries of New York City, particularly in the rich Proudfit Naval Collection, also yielded new material. It is Mr. Bamford's achievement to have handled this vast store of primary sources with such skill and judgement that the reader, by turning over letters from disgruntled forest proprietors, reports from harassed maîtres on the trickery and recalcitrance of the peasants, instructions from the top echelon of the navy to inspectors in the forests, and a variety bills, receipts, and memoranda, is given at first hand an appreciation of the difficulties faced by the navy in trying to obtain timber and masts of the choice quality required for building ships-of-the-line. The navy had to compete with the merchant marine and with industrial and private users of fuel for supplies that were continually being depleted by mismanagement and by the conversion of forests to arable land. Measures, superficially admirable, for conserving the forests are found on closer examination to be at once over-precise and not properly enforced. Transport, even in a country so abundantly supplied with navigable rivers as France, was expensive and difficult.

Book Between France and New France

Download or read book Between France and New France written by Gilles Proulx and published by Dundurn. This book was released on 1984-01-01 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between France and New France is an absorbing look at life abroad the sailing vessels which plied the North Atlantic during the French colonial era in North America. Focusing on the first half of the eighteenth century and the Seven Years’ War period, this book analyses four major aspects of the crossing: martime traffic and the outfit of vessels; the Atlantic course and navigation; the people and their occupations; and life aboard the ship. Together they present a fascinating view of sea life. Gilles Proulx has used official correspondence between the Minister of marine and the Canadian colonial authorities, and the papers seized on boarded vessels, as well as over one hundred log-books and personal diaries, to obtain a wealth of detail about the rigours of the colonial shipboard experience. In addition, many photographs, both colour and black and white, have been included to illustrate this exciting period in Canadian history.
