Book Farewell Babylon

Download or read book Farewell Babylon written by Naïm Kattan and published by David R. Godine Publisher. This book was released on 2007 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In "Farewell, Babylon," Naim Kattan takes readers into the heart of exotic mid-19th-century Baghdad's then-teeming Jewish community. Jews had lived in Iraq for 25 centuries, long before the time of Christ or Muhammad, but anti-Semitism and nationalism were on the rise. In this beautifully written memoir, a young boy comes of age and describes his discoveries -- of work, literature, patriotism, the joys of lazy Sundays swimming in the Tigris. He also talks eloquently of his greatest discovery: women and love. This is a story of roots and exile, of thirst for life and life's experiences. However, more than that it is a tribute to a lost world, an ancient Eastern city in which Iraq's Kurds, Bedouins, Sunnis, Shiites, Chaldeans, Catholics, and Jews all lived together in a rough, rewarding sort of harmony.

Book Transcultural English Studies

Download or read book Transcultural English Studies written by Frank Schulze-Engler and published by Rodopi. This book was released on 2009 with total page 487 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is most strikingly new about the transcultural is its sudden ubiquity. Following in the wake of previous concepts in cultural and literary studies such as creolization, hybridity, and syncretism, and signalling a family relationship to terms such as transnationality, translocality, and transmigration, 'transcultural' terminology has unobtrusively but powerfully edged its way into contemporary theoretical and critical discourse. The four sections of this volume denote major areas where 'transcultural' questions and problematics have come to the fore: theories of culture and literature that have sought to account for the complexity of culture in a world increasingly characterized by globalization, transnationalization, and interdependence; realities of individual and collective life-worlds shaped by the ubiquity of phenomena and experiences relating to transnational connections and the blurring of cultural boundaries; fictions in literature and other media that explore these realities, negotiate the fuzzy edges of 'ethnic' or 'national' cultures, and participate in the creation of transnational public spheres as well as transcultural imaginations and memories; and, finally, pedagogy and didactics, where earlier models of teaching 'other' cultures are faced with the challenge of coming to terms with cultural complexity both in what is being taught and in the people it is taught to, and where 'target cultures' have become elusive. The idea of 'locating' culture and literature exclusively in the context of ethnicities or nations is rapidly losing plausibility throughout an 'English-speaking world' that has long since been multi- rather than monolingual. Exploring the prospects and contours of 'Transcultural English Studies' thus reflects a set of common challenges and predicaments that in recent years have increasingly moved centre stage not only in the New Literatures in English, but also in British and American studies.

Book Fire of Bengal

Download or read book Fire of Bengal written by Rózsa Hajnóczy and published by University Press Limited, Bangladesh. This book was released on 1993 with total page 604 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fire of Bengal plunges us into the midst of life in Rabindranath Tagore's Santiniketan during the late 1920s. Rozsa Hajnoczy, wife of a Hungarian professor, kept a journal of her impression during their three years stay at the ashram. After her death in 1942 this was published in Budapest and became one of the classics of modern Hungarian literature. For through Rozsa's clear yet compassionate eye we witness Tagore's heaven of peace beg torn apart by the tensions that were shaking the foundations of the Raj, by subversion and riot among students and staff, and by the ill-fated East-West marriage between Atany Ray, a professor of English, and his European wife, Himjhuri. For these dramatic events Rozsa Hajnoczy provides a kaleidoscopic background of temples, places, harems and hovels, of mountain, jungle and plain, of princes and beggars, of holy men and revolutionaries. All this, and the portraits of Tagore, Gandhi, and the cosmopolitan characters on the campus, surely contains much that will be a revelation even to those who remember those times.

It compares the American ideal of liberty, equality, individual opportunity and social improvement with the contemporary condition of the regions, states and localities--the ideal American space with its reality as a place. It uses the public standard provided by the official ideology of the United States to see how well things are really going. Agnew and Smith consider the contrast between ideal and reality at local, state and national levels in education, health, and welfare, in community, race, gender, and calss relations, in economic and industrial development, and in the use and exploitation of America's landscape. American Space/American Place provides a series of compelling insights into the current condition of American Society, its natural environment and its place within the world.
