Book The Private Orations of Themistius

Download or read book The Private Orations of Themistius written by Robert J. Penella and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2023-12-22 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Themistius was a philosopher, a prominent Constantinopolitan senator, and an adviser to Roman emperors during the fourth century A.D. In this first translation of Themistius's private orations to be published in English, Robert J. Penella makes accessible texts that shed significant light on the culture of Constantinople and, more generally, the eastern Roman empire during the fourth century. The sixteen speeches translated here are equipped with ample annotations and an informative introduction, making them a valuable resource on the late antique period, as well as on Greek intellectual history and oratory. In Themistius's public orations, he played the role of imperial panegyrist, but in the "private" or unofficial orations presented here, the senator concerns himself with apologetics, rhetorical and philosophical programs, material of autobiographical interest, and ethical themes. The speeches are valuable as evidence for the political, social, philosophical, religious, and literary history of fourth century Byzantium, and as examples of pagan ideology and eloquence in the newly Christianized court. Themistius argues, among other things, that the philosopher should be involved in public affairs, that the lessons of philosophy should be broadcast to the masses, and that it is appropriate for the philosopher to be an effective orator in order to circulate his teachings.

Book International Perspectives on Teaching and Learning Mathematics with Virtual Manipulatives

Download or read book International Perspectives on Teaching and Learning Mathematics with Virtual Manipulatives written by Patricia S. Moyer-Packenham and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-06-21 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores terminology, frameworks, and research being conducted worldwide on virtual manipulatives. It brings together international authors who provide their perspectives on virtual manipulatives in research and teaching. By defining terminology, explaining conceptual and theoretical frameworks, and reporting research, the authors provide a comprehensive foundation on the study and use of virtual manipulatives for mathematics teaching and learning. This foundation provides a common way for researchers to communicate about virtual manipulatives and build on the major works that have been conducted on this topic. By discussing these big ideas, the book advances knowledge for future research on virtual manipulatives as these dynamic tools move from computer platforms to hand-held, touch-screen, and augmented platforms.

Book Innovation and Technology Enhancing Mathematics Education

Download or read book Innovation and Technology Enhancing Mathematics Education written by Eleonora Faggiano and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-10-14 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses key issues of Technology and Innovation(s) in Mathematics Education, drawing on heterogeneous ways of positioning about innovation in mathematical practice with technology. The book offers ideas and meanings of innovation as they emerge from the entanglement of the various researchers with the mathematical practice, the teacher training program, the student learning and engagement, or the research method that they are telling stories about. The multiple theoretical or empirical perspectives capture a rich landscape, in which the presence of digital technology entails the emergence of new practices, techniques, environments and devices, or new ways of making sense of technology in research, teaching and learning.

Book Uses of Technology in Primary and Secondary Mathematics Education

Download or read book Uses of Technology in Primary and Secondary Mathematics Education written by Lynda Ball and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-05-14 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides international perspectives on the use of digital technologies in primary, lower secondary and upper secondary school mathematics. It gathers contributions by the members of three topic study groups from the 13th International Congress on Mathematical Education and covers a range of themes that will appeal to researchers and practitioners alike. The chapters include studies on technologies such as virtual manipulatives, apps, custom-built assessment tools, dynamic geometry, computer algebra systems and communication tools. Chiefly focusing on teaching and learning mathematics, the book also includes two chapters that address the evidence for technologies’ effects on school mathematics. The diverse technologies considered provide a broad overview of the potential that digital solutions hold in connection with teaching and learning. The chapters provide both a snapshot of the status quo of technologies in school mathematics, and outline how they might impact school mathematics ten to twenty years from now.

Book From Text to Lived Resources

Download or read book From Text to Lived Resources written by Ghislaine Gueudet and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-09-06 with total page 365 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What kinds of curriculum materials do mathematics teachers select and use, and how? This question is complex, in a period of deep evolutions of teaching resources, with the proficiency of online resources in particular. How do teachers learn from these materials, and in which ways do they ‘tailor’ them for their use and pupil learning? Teachers collect resources, select, transform, share, implement, and revise them. Drawing from the French term « ingénierie documentaire »,we call these processes « documentation ». The literal English translation is « to work with documents », but the meaning it carries is richer. Documentation refers to the complex and interactive ways that teachers work with resources; in-class and out-of-class, individually, but also collectively.

Book Digital Curricula in School Mathematics

Download or read book Digital Curricula in School Mathematics written by Meg Bates and published by Information Age Publishing. This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The mathematics curriculum - what mathematics is taught, to whom it is taught, and when it is taught - is the bedrock to understanding what mathematics students can, could, and should learn. Today's digital technology influences the mathematics curriculum in two quite different ways. One influence is on the delivery of mathematics through hardware such as desktops, laptops, and tablets. Another influence is on the doing of mathematics using software available on this hardware, but also available on the internet, calculators, or smart phones. These developments, rapidly increasing in their availability and decreasing in their cost, raise fundamental questions regarding a mathematics curriculum that has traditionally been focused on paper-and-pencil work and taught in many places as a set of rules to be practiced and learned. This volume presents the talks given at a conference held in 2014 at the University of Chicago, sponsored by the Center for the Study of Mathematics Curriculum. The speakers - experts from around the world and inside the USA - were asked to discuss one or more of the following topics: - changes in the nature and creation of curricular materials available to students - transformations in how students learn and how they demonstrate their learning - rethinking the role of the teacher and how students and teachers interact within a classroom and across distances from each other The result is a set of articles that are interesting and captivating, and challenge us to examine how the learning of mathematics can and should be affected by today's technology.
