Book excerpt: In recent years there has been a clear rise in scientific collaboration, as well as in studies on the subject. While most scholars examine disciplines traditionally known to be collaborative, such as physics and space research, this book focuses on biology. It investigates the growing collaboration in the life sciences, or the emergence of what is called 'big biology'. While the Human Genome Project is often presented as the first large-scale research project in biology, cooperation in the life sciences has a longer history. A comparison between centralised 'big physics' and 'big biology' reveals how the latter has a networked structure, which evolved in interaction with the integration of information and communication technologies. By concentrating on the construction of these networks, three contemporary large-scale research collaborations are analysed: the Census of Marine Life that aims to make an inventory of life in the oceans, the Silicon Cell initiative that wants to design a replica of a cell in a computer, and the VIRGO consortium, which investigates host-virus interaction to develop a new therapy against influenza. This book demonstrates how the process of making science bigger, or the 'supersizing of science', transforms the ways in which science is organised while it also changes the work of scientists involved. As such, this has both scholarly and professional implications for the next generation of scientists.

Book excerpt: Report of the British Nutrition Foundation’s Task Force Chairman of the Task Force: Professor Malcolm Jackson, University of Liverpool Plants: Diet and Health is an extremely timely publication comprising the comprehensive and authoritative independent report of the British Nutrition Foundation’s Task Force concentrating on bioactive substances and antioxidant nutrients in plant foods. The book focuses on the present state of knowledge and the effect on good health through the intake of these substances in an appropriate diet, looking in detail at any possible protection afforded the body by these substances - against chronic disorders, particularly cancer and cardiovascular disease. This landmark publication includes chapters covering the classification, mechanisms of action and bioavailability of bioactive substances in plants, as well as in-depth coverage of the major plant foods: fruit, vegetables, cereals, nuts and pulses. Important chapters also cover the influence of the gut microflora, the effect of agronomy, storage, preservation, processing and cooking on bioactive substances, and the public health nutrition implications of all the issues raised. The final sections of the book cover the conclusions of the Task Force and the important recommendations made, which should be considered by all those involved in this area. There is also a questions and answers chapter covering topical media issues. Plants: Diet and Health provides essential core information for a wide range of health professionals, including dietitians, nutritionists, general and family practitioners and community nurses (e.g. school nurses, practice nurses and health visitors). Personnel in the food industry responsible for product development, production and packaging will find this landmark publication to be an extremely valuable reference, as will all those involved in the production of dietary supplements in the food and pharmaceutical industries. Lecturers, undergraduates, postgraduates and postdoctoral researchers in nutrition, dietetics, plant sciences, biochemistry, food science and food technology, public health, pharmacy, pharmacology and medicine will also find this book to be of great value in their work.

Book excerpt: How can the Internet and world wide web improve my long-term competitive advantage? This book helps answer this question by providing a better understanding of the technologies, their potential applications and the ways they can be used to add value for customers, support new strategies, and improve existing operations. It is not just about e-commerce but the broader theme of e-business which affects products, business processes, strategies, and relationships with customers, suppliers, distributors and competitors. To cover future trends, the editors have collected papers from authors operating at the frontiers of the developments so the reader can more appreciate the directions in which these technologies are heading. The resulting 165 essays have been collated into ten sections, which have been grouped in three parts: key issues, applications areas and applications, tools and technologies. A business rarely makes radical changes but is constantly making adjustments to circumstances. Businesses must now adapt to the global implications of the Internet and world wide web. This book hopes to aid awareness of the implications so that the changes are managed wisely.
