Book excerpt: Tinsley Faulkner loves art more than anything in the world. She’s a painter and owns an art gallery in the small town of Shadows Landing. But suddenly her life is changed when a man walks into the gallery looking to sell some art—art she knows is stolen. What she thinks is just a one-time thing quickly escalates into something so dangerous people have died for decades to protect it. Now Tinsley finds herself fighting for more than just her life, but to correct a historical wrong that’s affected generations of people. FBI Special Agent Paxton Kendry had just been transferred, against his will, to the Art Crimes division in Charleston from Atlanta’s violent gang task force. Something about his transfer never sat right with him, and he’s determined to get to the bottom of it. Only Tinsley Faulkner keeps sidetracking him. Instead of ignoring the feisty artist, he finds their verbal sparring matches invigorating. Until one day Tinsley stumbles onto something bigger than either of them could imagine. Now it’s up to Paxton to protect Tinsley as she finds herself in the middle of the most dangerous art heist of the century. But can he protect his heart along with her life, or will they disappear like the art Tinsley is willing to die to protect?

Book excerpt: Each of these Analysing Architecture Notebooks is devoted to a particular theme in understanding the rich and varied workings of architecture. They can be thought of as addenda to the foundation volume Analysing Architecture, which first appeared in 1997 and has subsequently been enlarged in three further editions. Examining these extra themes as a series of Notebooks, rather than as additional chapters in future editions, allows greater space for more detailed exploration of a wider variety of examples, whilst avoiding the risk of the original book becoming unwieldy. Shadows may be insubstantial but they are, nevertheless, an important element in architecture. In prehistoric times we sought shade as a refuge from the hot sun and chilling rain. Through history architects have used shadows to draw, to mould form, to paint pictures, to orchestrate atmosphere, to indicate the passing of time ... as well as to identify place. Sometimes shadow can be the substance of architecture.

Book The Shadow in The Frame

Book excerpt: In the heart of modern-day London, where the prestigious art world intersects with the city's shadowy underworld, renowned detective Eleanor "Ellie" Sinclair and her partner, Inspector Daniel "Danny" Morgan, find themselves drawn into a tangled web of mystery and obsession. A series of daring art thefts have left the city's elite collectors reeling, and the crimes are so meticulously executed that they seem to defy all logic. As Ellie and Danny delve deeper into the investigation, a pattern emerges – the stolen masterpieces are all connected to Julian Marlowe, a enigmatic artist from the early 20th century whose works have been lost to time for decades. Whispers abound that these pilfered paintings hold the key to locating Marlowe's greatest and most infamous creation, the cursed masterpiece known as "The Shadow in the Frame." This haunting work of art was said to drive its viewers to the brink of madness before vanishing into thin air, much like its creator, who disappeared under mysterious circumstances long ago. Enter Sebastian Grey, a charming and elusive art thief whose very existence seems to taunt Ellie and Danny at every turn. But Sebastian is no ordinary criminal – he is an aficionado with a profound knowledge of art history and an insatiable hunger for the thrill of the chase. His daring heists are not motivated by greed or fame, but by a personal mission to uncover the truth about Marlowe and his final, enigmatic work. As the detectives pursue Sebastian through a labyrinth of clues hidden within the stolen paintings, they find themselves navigating the treacherous waters of the art world, where corrupt dealers, obsessive collectors, and deadly rivals lurk in every shadow. The lines between hunter and prey blur, and Sebastian becomes an unlikely ally as they confront a far more formidable foe – a powerful secret society determined to keep Marlowe's final work, and its dark secrets, buried forever.

Book Quantum Invariants of Knots and 3 Manifolds

Download or read book Quantum Invariants of Knots and 3 Manifolds written by Vladimir G. Turaev and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2016-07-11 with total page 620 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Due to the strong appeal and wide use of this monograph, it is now available in its third revised edition. The monograph gives a systematic treatment of 3-dimensional topological quantum field theories (TQFTs) based on the work of the author with N. Reshetikhin and O. Viro. This subject was inspired by the discovery of the Jones polynomial of knots and the Witten-Chern-Simons field theory. On the algebraic side, the study of 3-dimensional TQFTs has been influenced by the theory of braided categories and the theory of quantum groups. The book is divided into three parts. Part I presents a construction of 3-dimensional TQFTs and 2-dimensional modular functors from so-called modular categories. This gives a vast class of knot invariants and 3-manifold invariants as well as a class of linear representations of the mapping class groups of surfaces. In Part II the technique of 6j-symbols is used to define state sum invariants of 3-manifolds. Their relation to the TQFTs constructed in Part I is established via the theory of shadows. Part III provides constructions of modular categories, based on quantum groups and skein modules of tangles in the 3-space. This fundamental contribution to topological quantum field theory is accessible to graduate students in mathematics and physics with knowledge of basic algebra and topology. It is an indispensable source for everyone who wishes to enter the forefront of this fascinating area at the borderline of mathematics and physics. Contents: Invariants of graphs in Euclidean 3-space and of closed 3-manifolds Foundations of topological quantum field theory Three-dimensional topological quantum field theory Two-dimensional modular functors 6j-symbols Simplicial state sums on 3-manifolds Shadows of manifolds and state sums on shadows Constructions of modular categories

Out there, she wasn’t an heiress and her ability wasn’t constantly questioned. Instead, she was just another jumper. Until one day everything in her life changed. An unknown man threatens Willa and those she loves for access to her company’s confidential and powerful technology. She thinks everything she’s worked so hard for is lost when faced with a no-win scenario unfolding around her. That’s when Porter Davies falls into her lap, literally. Book Framing Faust

    Book Details:
  • Author : Inez Hedges
  • Publisher : SIU Press
  • Release : 2009-03-10
  • ISBN : 0809386534
  • Pages : 262 pages

Download or read book Framing Faust written by Inez Hedges and published by SIU Press. This book was released on 2009-03-10 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this interdisciplinary cultural history that encompasses film, literature, music, and drama, Inez Hedges follows the thread of the Faustian rebel in the major intellectual currents of the last hundred years. She presents Faust and his counterpart Mephistopheles as antagonistic—yet complementary—figures whose productive conflict was integral to such phenomena as the birth of narrative cinema, the rise of modernist avant-gardes before World War II, and feminist critiques of Western cultural traditions. Framing Faust: Twentieth-Century Cultural Struggles pursues a dialectical approach to cultural history. Using the probing lens of cultural studies, Hedges shows how claims to the Faustian legacy permeated the struggle against Nazism in the 1930s while infusing not only the search for socialist utopias in Russia, France, and Germany, but also the quest for legitimacy on both sides of the Cold War divide after 1945. Hedges balances new perspectives on such well-known works as Thomas Mann’s Dr. Faustus and Jack Kerouac’s Dr. Sax with discussions of previously overlooked twentieth-century expressions of the Faust myth, including American film noir and the Faust films of Stan Brakhage. She evaluates musical compositions—Hanns Eisler’s Faust libretto, the opera Votre Faust by Henri Pousseur and Michel Butor, and Alfred Schnittke’s Faust Cantata—as well as works of fiction and drama in French and German, many of which have heretofore never been discussed outside narrow disciplinary confines. Enhanced by twenty-four illustrations, Framing Faust provides a fascinating and focused narrative of some of the major cultural struggles of the past century as seen through the Faustian prism, and establishes Faust as an important present-day frame of reference.
