Hezekiah followed not in the sinful way of his father Ahaz, but "he did that which was right in the sight of the Lord " (2 Chron. xxix. 2), not only turning to the Lord and removing the idols, but" in the first year of his reign in the first month he opened the doors of the house of the Lord, and repaired them" (v. 3), commanding the Levites to commence the cleansing of the holy place, and after they had accomplished the work in eight days the temple services were again carried on. Once more the sin offering, the burnt offering, and the offering for thanksgiving were slain and burnt upon the altar according to the commandment, and "so the service of the house of the Lord was set in order" (2 Chron. xxix. 35). Then followed the keeping of the passover with the feast of unleavened bread, when " the Levites and the priests praised the Lord day by day, singing with loud instruments unto the Lord," which resulted in such gladness that they "took counsel to keep other seven days." This they did, "and all the congregation of Judah, with the priests and the Levites and all the congregation that came out of Israel and the strangers that came out of the land of Israel, and that dwelt in Judah, rejoiced. Beginning with a presentation of the silk finds in the Oseberg burial, the richest Viking burial find ever discovered, the other silk finds from high status graves in Scandinavia are discussed along with an introduction to the techniques used to produce raw silk and fabrics. Later chapters concentrate on trade and exchange, considering the role of silk items both as trade objects and precious gifts, and in the light of coin finds. The main trade routes of silk to Scandinavia along the Russian rivers, and comparable Russian finds are described and the production and regulation of silk in Persia, early Islamic production areas and the Byzantine Empire discussed. The final chapter considers silk as a social actor in various contexts in Viking societies compared to the Christian west.
