Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chance, in addition to the unavoidable ambiguity caused by time, is one of the main guilty parties in the transmission of ancient texts – or lack thereof. However, the same cannot be said for what concerns the mechanisms of selection and loss of historical and literary memory, where the voluntary awareness of obscuring is often part of a precise aim, thus leading the cultural memory of a literate society to become fragmented. The present volume explores the devices and criteria of selection and loss in Ancient and Medieval texts and the subsequent fragmentation of such literature, but it also addresses the questions of the damnatio memoriae, of literary strategies such as reticence and omission, as well as of known texts deemed lost but re-found thanks to state-of-the-art methods in digitization. The many and diverse nuances of the concepts of omission, selection, and loss throughout Ancient and Medieval literature and history are illustrated through a number of case studies in the four sections of this volume, each examining a different facet of the topic: ‘Mechanisms and criteria of textual loss and selection’, ‘Lost texts re-discovered’, ‘Voluntary omissions and desire for oblivion’, and ‘Re-working the known’.

Book Memory Fragmentation from Below and Beyond the State

Download or read book Memory Fragmentation from Below and Beyond the State written by Anne Bazin and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-05-22 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume suggests a model of collective memory that distinguishes between two conceptual logics of memory fragmentation: vertical fragmentation and horizontal fragmentation. It offers a series of case studies of conflict and post-conflict collective memory, shedding light on the ways various actors participate in the production, dissemination, and contestation of memory discourses. With attention to the characteristics of both vertical and horizontal memory fragmentation, the book addresses the plurality of diverging, and often conflicting, memory discourses that are produced within the public sphere of a given community. It analyzes the juxtaposition, tensions, and interactions between narratives produced beyond or below the central state, often transcending national boundaries. The book is structured according to the type of actors involved in a memory fragmentation process. It explores how states have been trying to produce and impose memory discourses on civil societies, sometimes even against the experiences of their own citizens, and how such efforts as well as backlash from actors below and beyond the state have led to horizontal and vertical memory fragmentation. Furthermore, it considers the attempts by states’ representatives to reassert control of national memory discourses and the subsequent resistances they face. As such, this volume will appeal to sociology and political science scholars interested in memory studies in post-conflict societies.

Book Fragmentation in Sleep and Mind Linking Dissociative Symptoms Sleep and Memory

Download or read book Fragmentation in Sleep and Mind Linking Dissociative Symptoms Sleep and Memory written by Sue Llewellyn and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2018-03-27 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fragmented, dissociated consciousness can characterize the mind in both wake and sleep states. Dissociative symptoms, during sleep, include vivid dreaming, nightmares, and alterations in objective sleep parameters (e.g., lengthening of REM sleep). During waking hours, dissociative symptoms exhibit disparate characteristics encompassing memory problems, excessive daydreaming, absentmindedness, and impairments and discontinuities in perceptions of the self, identity, and the environment. Llewellyn has theorized that a progressive and enduring de-differentiation of wake and dream states of consciousness eventually results in schizophrenia; a lesser degree of de-differentiation may have implications for dissociative symptoms. Against a background of de-differentiation between the dream and wake states, the papers in this volume link consciousness, memory, and mental illness with a special interest for dissociative symptoms.

Book Understanding Operating Systems

Download or read book Understanding Operating Systems written by Ida M. Flynn and published by Cengage Learning. This book was released on 2001 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: UNDERSTANDING OPERATING SYSTEMS provides a basic understanding of operating systems theory, a comparison of the major operating systems in use, and a description of the technical and operational tradeoffs inherent in each. The effective two-part organization covers the theory of operating systems, their historical roots, and their conceptual basis (which does not change substantially), culminating with how these theories are applied in the specifics of five operating systems (which evolve constantly). The authors explain this technical subject in a not-so-technical manner, providing enough detail to illustrate the complexities of stand-alone and networked operating systems. UNDERSTANDING OPERATING SYSTEMS is written in a clear, conversational style with concrete examples and illustrations that readers easily grasp.

Book Korean Memories and Psycho Historical Fragmentation

Download or read book Korean Memories and Psycho Historical Fragmentation written by Mikyoung Kim and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-09-09 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This pioneering book is the first English volume on Korean memories. In it, Mikyoung Kim introduces ‘psycho-historical fragmentation’, a concept that explains South Korea’s mnemonic rupture as a result of living under intense temporal, psychological and physical pressure. As Korean society has undergone transformation at unusual speed and intensity, so has its historical memory. Divided into three sections, on lingering colonial legacies, the residuals of the Cold War and Korean War, and Korea’s democracy movement in the 1980s, Korean Memories and Psycho-Historical Fragmentation aims to tell multi-layered, subtle and lesser-known stories of Korea’s historical past. With contributions from interdisciplinary perspectives, it reveals the fragmentation of Korean memory and the impact of silencing.

Book excerpt: An autobiographical novel, set in the early 20th century, about the life of a boy born to a poor family in northern Syria. Fragments of Memory offers a picture of reality that is simple, direct, and quite emotional... an image of Syrian society in the thirties and forties through the struggle of an impoverished family- of an origin that is neither rural nor urban- which moves from the city to the countryside, only to be forced back unwillingly, groping for survival. Khaldoun Shamaa's Fragments of Memory is an autobiographical novel about the life of a boy born to a poor family in northern Syria. Mina sets these personal events against a richly detailed description of events in the history of early 20th century Syria, as the silkworm industry gave way to modern foreign technology. The mode of life described is one of a bygone era.

Book From Fragmentation to Coherence

Download or read book From Fragmentation to Coherence written by Sacha van Rood and published by Eburon Uitgeverij B.V.. This book was released on 2014-11-24 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In From Fragmentation to Coherence, the author Sacha van Rood presents a theory for the genesis of autism and the disorder known as "derealization/depersonalization" by demonstrating the connections between them and tracing the roots to events in early childhood. She discusses the crucial importance of creating a functional perception of reality in the early months and years of life, and the environmental conditions that must be present for this process to succeed. She identifies certain factors in modern lifestyles that may hamper the creation of a functional perception of reality, leading in the most extreme cases to a disastrous rupturing of a child's development. Van Rood's theory, which gives an explanation for the experience of unreality that is intrinsic to derealization and depersonalization, also suggests possible paths to the prevention -- and in some cases possibly even a cure -- for the disorder known as autism.

Book Complete Guide To The Fragment Molecular Orbital Method In Gamess From One Atom To A Million At Your Service

Download or read book Complete Guide To The Fragment Molecular Orbital Method In Gamess From One Atom To A Million At Your Service written by Dmitri G Fedorov and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2023-02-17 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fragment molecular orbital (FMO) method is a fast linear-scaling quantum-mechanical method employed by chemists and physicists all over the world. It provides a wealth of properties of fragments from quantum-chemical calculations, a bottomless treasure pit for data mining and machine learning. However, there is no user-friendly description of its usage in the widely employed quantum-chemical open-source software GAMESS, nor is there any book covering the usage of GAMESS in general. This leaves very many interested users to their own devices to get through a variety of problems with very cryptic descriptions of keywords in the program manual and no guide whatsoever as to what options should be set for particular scientific tasks. This book is the panacea to many frustrations. The main focus of the book is to build a solid bridge connecting FMO users to GAMESS, by giving a helpful introduction of various FMO methods as needed for particular problems found in computational chemistry, and describing in detail how to do these simulations and understand the results from the output of the program. The book also covers parallelization strategies for attaining high parallel efficiency in massively parallel computations, and provides means to analyze performance and design a solution for overcoming performance bottlenecks. A special section is devoted to dealing with problems in executing GAMESS, arising from computational environment and user errors. Finally, 14 carefully selected types of applications are discussed in detail, describing the input keywords and explaining where to find the main results in the text-based output.

Book The Poetics of Fragmentation in Contemporary British and American Fiction

Download or read book The Poetics of Fragmentation in Contemporary British and American Fiction written by Vanessa Guignery and published by Vernon Press. This book was released on 2019-12-02 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The last decades have seen a revival of fragmentation in British and American works of fiction that deny linearity, coherence and continuity in favour of disruption, gaps and fissures. Authors such as Ali Smith, David Mitchell and David Shields have sought new ways of representing our global, media-saturated contemporary experience which differ from modernist and postmodernist experimentations from which the writers nevertheless draw inspiration. This volume aims to investigate some of the most important contributions to fragmentary literature from British and American writers since the 1990s, with a particular emphasis on texts released in the twenty-first century. The chapters within examine whether contemporary forms of literary fragmentation constitute a return to the modernist episteme or the fragmented literature of exhaustion of the 1960s, mark a continuity with postmodernist aesthetics or signal a deviation from past models and an attempt to reflect today’s accelerated culture of social media and over-communication. Contributors theorise and classify literary fragments, examine the relationship between fragmentation and the Zeitgeist (influenced by globalisation, media saturation and social networks), analyse the mechanics of multimodal and multimedial fictions, and consider the capacity of literary fragmentation to represent personal or collective trauma and to address ethical concerns. They also investigate the ways in which the architecture of the printed book is destabilised and how aesthetic processes involving fragmentation, bricolage and/or collage raise ontological, ethical and epistemological questions about the globalised contemporary world we live in and its relation to the self and the other. Besides the aforementioned authors, the volume makes reference to the works of J. G. Ballard, Julian Barnes, Mark Z. Danielewski, David Markson, Jonathan Safran Foer, David Foster Wallace, Jeanette Winterson and several others.

Book Data Structures and Algorithms in Java

Download or read book Data Structures and Algorithms in Java written by Michael T. Goodrich and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2014-01-28 with total page 736 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The design and analysis of efficient data structures has long been recognized as a key component of the Computer Science curriculum. Goodrich, Tomassia and Goldwasser's approach to this classic topic is based on the object-oriented paradigm as the framework of choice for the design of data structures. For each ADT presented in the text, the authors provide an associated Java interface. Concrete data structures realizing the ADTs are provided as Java classes implementing the interfaces. The Java code implementing fundamental data structures in this book is organized in a single Java package, net.datastructures. This package forms a coherent library of data structures and algorithms in Java specifically designed for educational purposes in a way that is complimentary with the Java Collections Framework.
