Book Ontological Aspects of Early Jewish Anthropology

Download or read book Ontological Aspects of Early Jewish Anthropology written by Tyson L. Putthoff and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2016-11-28 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Ontological Aspects of Early Jewish Anthropology, Tyson L. Putthoff explores early Jewish beliefs about how the human self reacts ontologically in God’s presence. Combining contemporary theory with sound exegesis, Putthoff demonstrates that early Jews widely considered the self to be intrinsically malleable, such that it mimics the ontological state of the space it inhabits. In divine space, they believed, the self therefore shares in the ontological state of God himself. The book is critical for students and scholars alike. In putting forth a new framework for conceptualising early Jewish anthropology, it challenges scholars to rethink not only what early Jews believed about the self but how we approach the subject in the first place.

  • Author : Alvin Boyd Kuhn
  • Publisher : Book Tree
  • Release : 2007-09
  • ISBN : 1585093181
  • Pages : 513 pages

Download or read book Who is This King of Glory written by Alvin Boyd Kuhn and published by Book Tree. This book was released on 2007-09 with total page 513 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reveals that much of Christianity and its beliefs had originated in ancient Egypt rather than the Middle East. The author presents us with how, where and why many spiritual Egyptian beliefs were adopted into Christian form and accepted as "history", as opposed to being carried over in their original mythological form. Kuhn states, "The gospels are not and never were histories. They are now proven to have been cryptic dramas of the spiritual evolution of humanity and of the history of the human soul in its earthly tabernacle of flesh." For Christianity to be expressed in the way it was first intended, as experienced during the first two centuries of its existence, one must first acknowledge its pagan roots. This is too much of a leap for most people, but they have not read this book. The author reveals how things were altered in the third century by the existing priesthood and why.

Book The Great University of Life

Download or read book The Great University of Life written by Foster Laverne Harding and published by Red Wheel/Weiser. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Great University of Life is about waking up to a remarkably expanded view of life on Planet Earth. It shares a soul journey many millennia in the making and how the author became aware of his "soul history." He explains that a unique soul history is just the nature of creation. Being engaged in an eternal soul journey is perfectly normal and common to each of us. The only unusual aspect of the soul journey described in The Great University of Life is awareness of it during earthly life. Your soul already knows these things. The author shared his transformation in life understanding, and offers insights to help readers open awareness of their own soul story. He believes that life is created to hold meaning and joy, and advises us to relax and trust the process.

Book Battling the Gods

    Book Details:
  • Author : Tim Whitmarsh
  • Publisher : Knopf Publishing Group
  • Release : 2015
  • ISBN : 0307958329
  • Pages : 306 pages

Download or read book Battling the Gods written by Tim Whitmarsh and published by Knopf Publishing Group. This book was released on 2015 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The absence of centralized religious authority made for an extraordinary variety of perspectives on sacred matters, from the devotional to theatheos, or "godless." Whitmarsh explores this kaleidoscopic range of ideas about the gods, focusing on the colorful individuals who challenged their existence. Among these were some of the greatest ancient poets and philosophers and writers, as well as the less well known: Diagoras of Melos, perhaps the first self-professed atheist; Democritus, the first materialist; Socrates, executed for rejecting the gods of the Athenian state; Epicurus and his followers, who thought gods could not intervene in human affairs; the brilliantly mischievous satirist Lucian of Samosata. Before the revolutions of late antiquity, which saw the scriptural religions of Christianity and Islam enforced by imperial might, there were few constraints on belief.

Book The First German Philosopher

Download or read book The First German Philosopher written by Cecilia Muratori and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-03-31 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book investigates Hegel’s interpretation of the mystical philosophy of Jakob Böhme (1575-1624), considered in the context of the reception of Böhme in the 18th and 19th centuries, and of Hegel’s own understanding of mysticism as a philosophical approach. The three sections of this book present: the historical background of Hegel’s encounter with Böhme’s writings; the development of two different conceptions of mysticism in Hegel’s work; and finally Hegel’s approach to Böhme’s philosophy, discussing in detail the references to Böhme both in published writings and manuscripts. According to Hegel, Böhme is “the first German philosopher”. The reason for placing Böhme at the very beginning of German philosophy is that Hegel considers him to be a profound thinker, despite his rudimentary education. Hegel’s fascination with Böhme mainly concerns the mystic’s understanding of the symbiotic relation between God and his opposite, the Devil: he considers this to be the true speculative core of Böhme’s thought. By interpreting Böhme, Hegel intends to free the speculative content of his thought from the limitations of the inadequate, barbarous form in which the mystic expressed it, and also to liberate Böhme from the prejudices surrounding his writings, placing him firmly in the territory of philosophy and detaching him from the obscurity of esotericism. Combining historical reconstructions and philosophical argumentation, this book guides the reader through an important phase in German philosophy, and ultimately into an inquiry about the relationship between mysticism and philosophy itself.

Book Greek Praise Poetry and the Rhetoric of Divinity

Download or read book Greek Praise Poetry and the Rhetoric of Divinity written by Felix J. Meister and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2019-11-14 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The polar dichotomy between man and god, and the insurmountable gulf between them, are considered a fundamental principle of archaic and classical Greek religion. Greek Praise Poetry and the Rhetoric of Divinity argues that poetry produced between the eighth and the fifth centuries BC does not present such a uniform view of the world, demonstrating instead that particular genres of poetry may assess the distance between humans and gods differently. Discussion focuses on genres where the boundaries appear to be more flexible, with wedding songs, victory odes, and selected passages from tragedy and comedy taken as case studies that illustrate that some human individuals may, in certain situations, be presented as enjoying a state of happiness, a degree of beauty, or an amount of power comparable to that of the gods. A central question throughout is whether these presentations stem from an individual poet's creative ingenuity or from the conventional ideological repertoire of the respective genre, and how this difference might shape the comparison of a human with the gods. Another important question concerns the ritual contexts in which some of these songs would have been performed, expanding the scope of the analysis beyond merely a literary device to encompass a fundamental aspect of archaic and classical Greek culture.
