Book excerpt: The exposed Tertiary carbonates of the Dammam Dome present an opportunity to study fractures in outcrops within the oil-producing region of Eastern Saudi Arabia. The study focuses on: 1) the characterization of fractures, 2) interpretation of their fracturing mechanism, and 3) the implications for the deep carbonate reservoirs of the Dammam Dome. The characterization of the outcrop fractures is integrated with structural analysis of the near-surface horizons mapped from reflection seismic and well data. Fractures are observed within all exposed carbonate units, but predominantly within the widely exposed Middle Rus unit. The fractures are opening-mode, bed-bound joints that form orthogonal sets (NW-SE and NE-SW trending joints). The trends of through-going, primary NW-SE trending joints do not correlate with the trends of remote regional stress associated with compression of Zagros uplift, suggesting they did not develop due to that orogenic event. The primary joints also seem to have developed independently of the observed karst features and interpreted near-surface faults. The analysis of joint pattern and their spacings generally seem to reflect the fold growth of the strata, position on fold and mechanical stratigraphy. The study results provide a first-order conceptual fracture model for the subsurface reservoirs to guide future development.

The dome is characterized by different types of fractures extending from the apex to the periphery of the dome. These fractures are present in the four formations of the Dammam Dome, such as the Rus Formation, Dammam Formation, Hadrukh Formation, and Dam Formation. The fractures within the Dammam Dome can be classified based on size, trend, and extension into: major, minor, and very small size-localized fracture. However, they could also be classified based on principal stresses (sigma 1, sigma 2, and sigma 3) into: mode I, mode II, mode III, and mixed mode fracture. In addition, cross cutting relationship indicates that minor fractures are younger than the major fractures within the Dammam Dome.

Book excerpt: This memoir provides a thorough review of the geology of the rimmed Arabian Intrashelf Basin, reconciling differing interpretations of lithostratigraphy, sequence stratigraphy and biostratigraphy. Variation of energy levels and facies due to its setting in the SE palaeotradewind belt are described. The roles subtle tectonism played in developing the basin and in the Late Jurassic creating restriction by uplift and exposure of the Tethys shelf are evaluated. The intrashelf basin formed during rising sea level as a single rimmed carbonate intrashelf basin. A possible global cooling phase resulted in a lowstand which restricted the basin, resulting in petrographically unique carbonate source rock facies dominated by cyanobacterial deposition. Two subsequent 3rd order carbonate sequences largely filled the basin. Eustatic change concomitant with uplift of the Tethys shelf resulted in alternation of carbonates and evaporites (gypsum-anhydrite) across the region. The end result was a sealed intrashelf basin which preserved early-formed porosity and confined generated hydrocarbons within the intrashelf basin facies.

Outcrop and subsurface observations of syndepositional fractures in carbonate mound complexes and platforms cannot be used to directly identify the mechanism or controlling factors behind their formation, because these observations represents the end state of potentially long and complex stress and diagenetic history. The limitations of outcrop observations are overcome by using a finite-element and combined finite-discrete forward models to simulate differential compaction and subsequent fracture development in carbonate mound complexes. Differential compaction deformation is modeled at the mound scale (tens of meters) and at an isolated platform-scale (kilometers). Numerical models are used to (1) quantify amount of differential subsidence required to develop fractures, (2) predict areas susceptible to fracture development, and (3) identify the most critical factors controlling differential compaction fracturing. 2D and 3D models are constructed based on classic outcrops of Late Pennsylvanian carbonate mounds in the Sacramento Mountains and age-equivalent Canyon and Cisco formations in the Midland Basin, West Texas. Modeling results are consistent with fracture observations in outcrops and the subsurface. Geometry of lithified antecedent topography and the overlying strata controls the location of differential compaction fractures. Fractures develop in strata overlying antecedent topography in transitional crest-to-off-mound/platform areas. Another location for fracture development corresponds to strata overlying the mound/platform slope-to-off-mound/basinal setting transition. Modeling results demonstrate that only a minor amount (cm -10s cm scale) of differential subsidence is required to develop fractures in early lithified carbonates. This suggests that differential compaction fractures in carbonate systems may be generally underestimated. Fracture intensity is found to be proportional to the amount of differential subsidence. A greater control on fracture intensity is the bedding contact nature. Fracture development in strata with bedding contacts that are resistant to layer-parallel slip display almost double the fracture intensity of strata with contacts favoring slip. Layer-parallel slip is concluded to be a major mechanism for dissipating stress during compaction-driven folding. The process-based modeling approach applied by this work provides fundamental understanding of differential compaction fracture development in carbonate mound complexes, which is valuable to prediction of fractures in subsurface reservoirs.
