Book Fracture Zone A Mid Atlantic Ridge 37 Deg N A Near Bottom Geophysical Study

Download or read book Fracture Zone A Mid Atlantic Ridge 37 Deg N A Near Bottom Geophysical Study written by Robert S. Detrick and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 14 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A near-bottom geophysical survey has been made of a small transform fault, designated Fracture Zone A, located on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge near 37N. Morphologically, Fracture Zone A is defined by a broad U-shaped valley that is widest and deepest near its intersection with the adjacent rift valleys. The walls of Fracture Zone A are structurally complex with both E-W and N-S trending scarps; however, the main trend of the transform fault valley is determined by several prominent E-W trending scarps giving the valley a graben-like appearance. While the transform fault valley itself is several kilometers in width, the actual zone of decoupling across Fracture Zone A presently occurs over a very narrow and readily identifiable zone. Structural lineations mapped within the transform fault valley generally parallel the trend of the rift valley, indicating that this crust was probably generated by normal sea-floor spreading processes.

Book Plate Tectonics A Very Short Introduction

Download or read book Plate Tectonics A Very Short Introduction written by Peter Molnar and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2015 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: La 4e de couv. indique : "The concept of plate tectonics is relatively new - it was only in the 1960s that the idea that continents drifted with respect to one another came to be accepted. Plate tectonics now forms one of geology's basic principles and explains much of the large-scale structure and phenomena we see on Earth today. In this Very Short Introduction Peter Molnar explores the impact that plate tectonics has had on our understanding of Earth : how the ocean floor forms, widens, and disappears ; why earthquakes and volcanoes are found in distinct zones ; and how the great mountain ranges of the world were built. As the Himalaya continues to grow, the Atlantic widens, and new ocean floor is forming, the mechanisms of plate tectonics continue to alter the surface of our planet."

Book Mantle and Lower Crust Exposed in Oceanic Ridges and in Ophiolites

Download or read book Mantle and Lower Crust Exposed in Oceanic Ridges and in Ophiolites written by R.L.M Vissers and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume follows a Specialized Symposium on "Mantle denudation in slow spreading ridges and in ophiolites", held at the XII EUG Meeting in Strasbourg, spring 1993. During the meeting it was felt that the contribu tions to the Symposium justified a volume presenting its main scientific achievements. The present title of the volume shows that the center of inter est has slightly shifted with respect to the initial objective: in order to under stand the processes involved in accretion taking place at oceanic ridges, it is crucial to study the interaction between uppermost mantle and lower crust. The approach favored here is that of petrological and structural analysis of oceanic rocks in present-day oceanic ridges combined with similar studies in ophiolites. Rock specimen collected by submersibles or dredge hauls in oceanic ridge environments provide a "ground truth". However, except for areas such as the MARK (Mid-Atlantic Ridge ne ar Kane fracture zone) where, thanks to multiple submersible dives, the local geology is known with aprecision even better than in many onshore ophiolites, mutual rela tionships between uppermost mantle and lower crust are poorly known. In contrast, onshore ophiolites provide a necessary large-scale picture built up over many years of structural and petrological mapping.

Book Bottom Gravity Currents and Overflows in Deep Channels of the Atlantic Ocean

Download or read book Bottom Gravity Currents and Overflows in Deep Channels of the Atlantic Ocean written by Eugene G. Morozov and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-01-01 with total page 505 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is dedicated to the analysis of bottom waters flows through underwater channels of the Atlantic Ocean. The study is based on recent observations of the authors, analysis of historical data, numerical modeling, and literature review. For example, studying both the measurements from the World Ocean Circulation experiment in the 1990s and recent measurements reveals the decadal variations of water properties in the ocean. Seawater is cooled at high latitudes, descends to the ocean bottom, and slowly flows to the tropical latitudes and further. This current is slow in the deep basins, but intensifies in the abyssal channels connecting the basins. The current overflows submarine topographic structures and sometimes forms deep cataracts when water descends over slopes by several hundred meters. The flow of Antarctic Bottom Water (AABW) is studied on the basis of CTD sections combined with Lowered Acoustic Doppler Profiling (LADCP) carried out annually, and long-term moored measurements of currents. This book is a collection of oceanographic data, interpretation, and analysis, which can be used by field oceanographers, specialists in numerical modeling, and students who specialize in oceanography.

Book Abyssal Channels in the Atlantic Ocean

Download or read book Abyssal Channels in the Atlantic Ocean written by Eugene G. Morozov and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-09-10 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is dedicated to the study of structure and transport of deep and bottom waters above and through underwater channels of the Atlantic Ocean. The study is based on recent observations, analysis of historical data, and literature reviews. This approach allows us to understand how water transport and water mass prop- ties have changed over the last years and decades. The focus of our study is on the propagation of bottom waters in the Atlantic Ocean based on new field data at key points. At the end of the 1920s, the first integral study of water masses and bottom topography of the Central and South Atlantic was carried out from the German - search vessel Meteor. This German Atlantic Expedition was one of the first cruises equipped with the newly developed echo sounder (fathometer): an obligatory p- requisite for the investigation of bottom morphology in the deep sea on an - erational base. The results of the expedition were published by Wüst, Defant, and colleagues in the multivolume METEOR publication series starting with the cruise report by the ship’s commander (Spiess 1928, 1932). Historically, this series of p- lications, intermittently interrupted by World War II, was the basis for many years of research into the development of modern concepts about Atlantic water masses and their circulation schemes.
