Book Fracture Toughness Testing of Polyethylene Pipe Materials

Download or read book Fracture Toughness Testing of Polyethylene Pipe Materials written by WL. Bradley and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 10 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Multiple-specimen J-integral tests, which are defined in the ASTM Test for JIc, A Measure of Fracture Toughness (E 813-81), have been conducted on side-grooved compact tension specimens of medium- and high-density polyethylene. The specimens were precracked with a razor blade, as has been common practice to date, or were fatigue precracked. Tests were performed over a 50 range of crosshead rates in the quasi-static regime. Results indicated that the razor notching gives a J-R curve which is significantly higher than that obtained using fatigue precracked specimens. A significant variation in the J-R curve was noted for changes in the displacement rate due to the viscoelastic character of the polyethylene. The orientation of the specimens, which were cut from actual pipe, was found to have a significant effect on the fracture toughness. The fracture toughness results were correlated with fractographic results, and the behavior of side-grooved and non-side-grooved specimens was compared.

Book Fracture Toughness Testing of HDPE Plastic Pipe

Download or read book Fracture Toughness Testing of HDPE Plastic Pipe written by P. Fueler and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 17 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A program to investigate the applicability of fracture toughness test methods to high density polyethylene pipe is described. Fracture toughness test specimens cut from pipe material were tested in a precracked three-point bending test at different rates. The load versus crack opening displacement record was used in an attempt to judge the validity of the test and to determine the fracture load. This method appears to need further development for this class of materials, as the results were difficult to interpret. Use of the maximum force for tests which appeared to fail in a quasibrittle manner resulted in calculation of a fracture toughness value which generally did not satisfy validity conditions. This value was used to predict the burst pressure of pipes containing surface cracks in the longitudinal direction. The prediction of burst pressure was slightly conservative, but in agreement with the trend of the experimental results. Fractographic analysis indicates three modes of crack propagation: ductile, quasibrittle, and brittle.
