Book Fracture Toughness of Ductile Iron and Cast Steel

Download or read book Fracture Toughness of Ductile Iron and Cast Steel written by WL. Bradley and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The dynamic fracture behavior of ductile cast iron and cast steel has been studied to better explain why blunt notched Charpy bars indicate ductile iron has a quite inferior fracture toughness compared with cast steel with similar tensile properties (15 versus 75 J) while fracture mechanics tests indicate a much less significant difference in fracture toughness between the two materials. Using standard and fatigue precracked side-grooved Charpy specimens, it has been shown that the different predictions are due to a difference in constraint, the standard Charpy bar experiencing loss of constraint for the cast steel but remaining fully constrained for the ductile iron. For fatigue precracked and side-grooved Charpy specimens, initial crack extension occurred in both materials under conditions of full constraint, and the cast steel upper shelf fracture toughness was found to be only modestly better than the upper shelf fracture toughness of the ductile iron. Because of its lower ductile-to-brittle transition temperature, ductile iron has been found to have a superior fracture toughness to cast steel with similar tensile properties at temperatures below ambient.

Book Strength and Toughness of Materials

Download or read book Strength and Toughness of Materials written by Toshiro Kobayashi and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the shift from the Metal Age progresses, materials engineers and materials scientists seek new analytical and design methods to create stronger and more reliable materials. Based on extensive research and developmental work done at the author’s multi-disciplinary material laboratory, this graduate-level and professional reference addresses the relationship between fracture mechanisms (macroscale) and the microscopic, with the goal of explaining macroscopic fracture behavior based on a microscopic fracture mechanism. A careful fusion of mechanics and materials science, this text and monograph systematically considers an array of materials, from metals through ceramics and polymers, and demonstrates lab-tested strategies to develop desirable high-temperature materials for technological applications.

Book Fracture Toughness Testing of Ductile Cast Irons

Download or read book Fracture Toughness Testing of Ductile Cast Irons written by WL. Bradley and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 17 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fracture toughness of ferritic, spheroidal graphite ductile cast iron has been measured by a single-specimen J-integral technique. The method used a servohydraulic test frame in the displacement control mode, with overall test control and data acquisition managed by a minicomputer. Digitized load and displacement values were combined to calculate incremental crack lengths based on measured crack length-compliance calibrations. Plots of J versus change in crack length were generated, and values of JIc (and equivalent KIc) were determined using ASTM Test for JIc, a Measure of Fracture Toughness (E 813). This technique thus provided a means of determining the plane-strain fracture toughness (KIc) using small samples (2.5 cm thick) at temperatures from -150 to +25°C. Previous attempts to measure KIc directly on similar materials had produced invalid results for all tests except those performed at very low temperatures (-60°C and below).

Book Evaluation of the Fracture Toughness of Ductile Iron Using Fatigue Precracked Charpy Dynamic Tear and Compact Tension Specimens

Download or read book Evaluation of the Fracture Toughness of Ductile Iron Using Fatigue Precracked Charpy Dynamic Tear and Compact Tension Specimens written by WL. Bradley and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 14 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fracture toughness of ductile iron has been studied using dynamic tear, fatigue precracked (FPC) Charpy, and compact tension (CT) specimens. Specimens were fractured both quasi-statically and dynamically. Initial crack extension was found to occur at maximum load for both the compact tension specimens and the FPC Charpy specimens. However, initial crack extension occurred prior to maximum load for the dynamic tear specimens. Upper-shelf KJIc values determined from the compact tension specimens and the FPC Charpy specimens were similar (83 and 76 MPa ?m) while the J-value at maximum load for the dynamic tear specimens was found to fit nicely on the J-R curve from the CT specimens. The shift in ductile-to-brittle transition temperature with strain rate (comparing quasi-static with impact loading) was similar to what has been observed for structural steel with a similar yield strength.

Book Fracture Toughness of Unalloyed Austempered Ductile Cast Iron ADI

Download or read book Fracture Toughness of Unalloyed Austempered Ductile Cast Iron ADI written by SK. Putatunda and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The influence of microstructure on the tensile properties and the plane strain fracture toughness (KIc) of unalloyed austempered ductile cast iron (ADI) was examined in room temperature ambient atmosphere. The crack growth mechanism during fracture toughness tests was determined through detailed fractographic studies. Compact tension and round cylindrical specimens were prepared from unalloyed ADI and were given four different austempering heat treatments to produce four different microstructures. Tensile properties and fracture toughness of these four differently heat-treated materials as well as cast materials were determined as per relevant ASTM standards.

Book Effects of Sample Size and Loading Rate on the Transition Behavior of a Ductile Iron DI Alloy

Download or read book Effects of Sample Size and Loading Rate on the Transition Behavior of a Ductile Iron DI Alloy written by R. Salzbrenner and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The measurement and understanding of the fracture toughness of ductile irons (DI) are critical to the analysis of nuclear transportation casks made from these alloys. Cask containment must be assured for all loading events from normal handling to accidents during which high loads can be delivered at elevated rates. Cask walls are commonly in the range of 20 to 50 cm thick (or greater) in order to provide requisite nuclear shielding, and this requires that associated mechanical constraint effects must be considered. At elevated temperatures (that is, in the vicinity of ambient), DI behaves in an elastic-plastic manner, even for large section sizes (thickness > 20 cm) and moderately high loading rates. However, as the temperature is lowered or the loading rate is increased, ferritic DI alloys exhibit a relatively sharp transition to linear elastic behavior, with a significant decrease in the fracture toughness.

Book Determination of Lower Bound Fracture Toughness for Heavy Section Ductile Cast Iron DCI and Estimation by Small Specimen Tests

Download or read book Determination of Lower Bound Fracture Toughness for Heavy Section Ductile Cast Iron DCI and Estimation by Small Specimen Tests written by T. Arai and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 14 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spent nuclear fuel transport and/or storage casks (100-ton class) must maintain their structural integrity even when subjected to hypothetical transportation or handling accidents at storage facilities. For ductile cast iron (DCI) to be used as a cask containment boundary material, adequate fracture toughness and associated ductile behavior must be demonstrated at service temperatures and impact loading conditions of concern.
