Book Fracture Toughness Characterization of shipbuilding steels

Download or read book Fracture Toughness Characterization of shipbuilding steels written by J. R. Hawthorne and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 47 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New fracture control guidelines for welded ship hulls have been proposed as a result of an investigation sponsored by the Ship Structure Committee of the Maritime Transportation Research Board. These guidelines include fracture toughness requirements in terms of the Drop Weight-NDT temperature Dynamic Tear (DT) energy. To aid the implementation of these criteria an exploratory program was undertaken to characterize the dynamic fracture toughness of ordinary-strength shipbuilding steels, namely, ABS Grades A, B, C, D, E, and CS. Test materials (plate) were obtained at random from several shipyards and steel mills in an effort to characterize the products of current steel making practice. Fracture toughness trends were defined by means of Drop Weight-NDT, 1-in. DT and standard Charpy V-notch tests and the observed toughness characteristics were compared with the proposed toughness criteria. (Modified author abstract).

Book Advances in Fracture Toughness Characterization Procedures and in Quantitative Interpretations to Fracture safe Design for Structural Steels

Download or read book Advances in Fracture Toughness Characterization Procedures and in Quantitative Interpretations to Fracture safe Design for Structural Steels written by W. S. Pellini and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The state of knowledge of fracture-safe design for steels is examined in relation to the requirements for achieving practical solutions to general engineering problems. Analytical procedures evolved from fracture mechanics theory are demonstrated to provide for quantitative interpretations of engineering fracture toughness tests. It is thus possible to couple the procedural simplicity which is inherent to engineering tests with the analytical advantages of fracture mechanics theory. The coupling of these two approaches provides for practical advances in fracture-safe design which cover the totality of general engineering problems and requirements. The Charpy V test is shown to have applicability for use in the described fashion primarily in relation to the strength transition for high strength steels. The combined diagrams should serve the needs of both the materials and design fields. (Author).

Book Fracture Toughness Characteristics of the New Weldable Steels of 180 to 210 Ksi Yield Strengths

Download or read book Fracture Toughness Characteristics of the New Weldable Steels of 180 to 210 Ksi Yield Strengths written by Peter P. Puzak and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The yield strength range for steels from 180 to 210 ksi is currently covered by four weldable alloys of the following nominal chemical analysis: 18%Ni-8%Co-3%Mo maraging steel, 12%Ni-5%Cr-3%Mo maraging steel, 9%Ni-4%Co-0.20%C quenched and tempered (Q and T) steel, and 10%Ni-8%Co-2%Cr-1%Mo-0.10%C Q and T steel. Broad ranges of fracture resistance have been reported for these materials based on various fracture tests, and this report presents information for material selection and design guidance by providing an analysis of the interactions between the metallurgical and mechanical parameters that contribute to the fracture resistance of plate products. Definitions of the interaction between the metallurgical and the mechanical aspects are developed with the use of the Dynamic Tear (DT) test and the Ratio Analysis Diagram (RAD). (Author).

Book Fracture Toughness Characterization of Selected Ultra High Carbon Steels

Download or read book Fracture Toughness Characterization of Selected Ultra High Carbon Steels written by James Louis Taylor and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 75 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This effort, part of an ongoing program examining the microstructural and mechanical properties of extensively warm-worked ultra high carbon (UHC) steels, was directed at measurement of the fracture toughness of these steels. A facility was constructed to test bend-type fracture toughness specimens in accordance with the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) Standard E399-78; several UHC steel alloys were evaluated and the results correlated with microstructural and other mechanical test results. With one exception, processing failed to eliminate coarse carbides from the microstructures of these materials and fracture toughness, K(IC), values were accordingly low. A commercial alloy, AISI 52100, processed similarly to the other experimental alloys, did not have the coarse carbides present to as great an extent, and was significantly tougher, as manifested by a strength ratio twice that of the other alloys.
