Book Fracture Strength of Electron Beam Welded Ti6a1 4v and Ti 5a1 2 5sn Alloy Sheet at 423f

Download or read book Fracture Strength of Electron Beam Welded Ti6a1 4v and Ti 5a1 2 5sn Alloy Sheet at 423f written by E. F. KALUZA and published by . This book was released on 1963 with total page 1 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effect of shallow cracks on the fracture strength of parent metal and electron beam welds in annealed Ti-6Al-4V and Ti-5Al-2.5Sn alloys is presented in this report. Shallow cracks of varying size were induced in parent and weld metal specimens which were subsequently tensile tested at -423F. The critical crack depth of parent metal and electron beam welded Ti-6Al-4V was found to be 0.009 inch deep. As the crack depth increased beyond 0.009 inches, the parent metal and weld metal fracture strength decreased at approximate rates of 5,300 psi per 0.001 inch and 8,700 psi per 0.001 inch, respectively. The critical crack depth of parent metal and electron beam welded Ti-5Al-2.5Sn was about 0.008 inch deep. The fracture strength of parent metal and welds decreased at an approximate rate of 6000 psi per 0.001 inch of additional crack depth. Electron beam welds appear to offer no significant improvement in fracture strength properties over TIG welds. The critical crack size and fracture strength slopes were approximately the same for either process, TIG or electron beam. (Author).

Book excerpt: Several conditions of welds in all-beta Ti-13V11Cr-3Al alloy were examined for fracture toughness properties. Similar tests were run on agestrengthened base metal and on annealed welds in samples from another source representing Ti-6Al4V and Ti-13V-11Cr-3Al alloys. The results were included in a summary review of fracture toughness in base metal and in welds of both alloys. At a yield strength to density ratio of approximately one million in., there appeared to be no serious fracture toughness problems with Ti-6Al4V alloy. Under similar conditions, the all-beta base metal (Ti-13V-11Cr-3Al) had somewhat less than optimum fracture toughness so that a construction practice practically eliminating flaws in finished cases would be required. In the allbeta welds, some practices appeared to give satisfactory toughness.

Book Weldability of Formable Sheet Titanium Alloy Ti 15V 3Cr Al 3Sn

Download or read book Weldability of Formable Sheet Titanium Alloy Ti 15V 3Cr Al 3Sn written by A. E. Leach and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 85 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gas-Tungsten-Arc (GTA) and Electron Beam (EB) fusion welding process parameters were established for Ti-15V-3Cr-3Al-3Sn alloy sheet in 0.050-, 0.100- and 0.300-inch thicknesses. The material, purchased from Timet, was characterized by mechanical testing in the following conditions: solution annealed and solution annealed and aged at 900 and 950 F for eight hours. Solution annealed material is very ductile and formable. Aging response of base metal shows that 150 to 170 ksi minimum yield strengths can be achieved. GTA and EB welds were made using a square butt joint configuration in the 0.050- and 0. 100-inch thickness. A 'V' joint configuration was used to weld 0.100-inch thick material wire using the GTA process. 0.300-inch material was welded with the EB process only. All weldments were made using production equipment and there were no anomalies in welding this material. X-ray and dye penetrant tests showed that weldments were crackfree and within porosity limits. Bend and tensile tests made on weldments in the as-welded condition were very ductile and compared favorably to the ductility of solution annealed base metal. Aging response of welded specimens, tensile tested in both longitudinal and transverse directions, was similar to base metal and properties compared favorably to base metal properties. Notched tensile strengths, fracture toughness, and crack growth rates all indicate that Ti-15V-3Cr-3Al-3Sn weldments are satisfactory for structural applications.

Book Effect of Specimen Width on Fracture Toughness of Ti 6A1 4V Plate

Download or read book Effect of Specimen Width on Fracture Toughness of Ti 6A1 4V Plate written by HB. Bomberger and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 19 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From a group of 96 specimens ranging in thickness from 15 to 38 mm (0.60 to 1.50 in.), a regression equation was obtained for Ti-6A1-4V plate relating the fracture toughness, KQ, of 205-mm (8-in.) wide specimens to the variables of specimen thickness and fracture toughness, KQ, for 76-mm (3-in.) width. The fracture toughness value of Ti-6A1-4V plate can be increased appreciably in thin specimens by using an oversized width specimen. The magnitude of this toughness increase diminishes as the thickness increases and approaches 38-mm (1.5-in.). Oversizing the specimen results in a significant reduction in the stress at instability at 2 percent crack extension. The specimen strength ratio, Rsc, essentially remains the same while Kmax and the Pmax/PQ ratio increase.

Book Precracked Charpy Impact Fracture Toughness Properties of Backup Flux Welded Ti 5A1 2 5 Sn Alloy Plate from 320 Degrees to 550 Degrees Fahrenheit

Download or read book Precracked Charpy Impact Fracture Toughness Properties of Backup Flux Welded Ti 5A1 2 5 Sn Alloy Plate from 320 Degrees to 550 Degrees Fahrenheit written by and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A program was conducted to evaluate the effects of a proprietary backup flux-welding technique on the impact fracture toughness properties of Ti-5A1-2.5 Sn alloy plate. The flux was the product of Mitron Research and Development Corporation Precracked Charpy (often called subsize Charpy) specimens were tested under impact loads at -320 degrees F, -100 degrees room temperature, and 550 degrees F. The weld and heat affected zone (HAZ) bad greater fracture toughness resistance than the base metal. The fracture resistance, work per unit area (W/A) decreased with decreasing test temperature. At -320 degrees F the weld and HAZ retained 1/3 of their fracture resistance at room temperature. However, the weld- and HAZ-converted W/A impact fracture resistance at -320 degrees F had a Kc approximately equal 125 ksi square root of in. which indicated good toughness for this temperature. The fracture resistance did not appear to be a function of the specimen's location through the thickness of the plate for a given specimen orientation. In general, the fracture resistance of the weld and HAZ compared to the base metal was excellent.
