Book Fracture Mechanics of Dissimilar Material Bonded Through an Orthotropic Interfacial Zone

Download or read book Fracture Mechanics of Dissimilar Material Bonded Through an Orthotropic Interfacial Zone written by and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this paper the fracture mechanics of orthotropic materials containing collinear interface cracks is considered. The primary objective is to study the influence of the thickness and the structure of the interfacial regions on the crack driving force. The interfacial region is assumed to be a relatively thin orthotropic elastic layer. The stress intensity factors or the strain energy release rates are assumed to be the main measure of the crack driving force. A relatively simple and efficient method is presented to solve the related elasticity problem. The results are obtained for a wide range of actual material combinations. In order to study the influence of the structure of the interfacial zone, the problem is also solved for isotropic and orthotropic materials bonded through a layer with hypothetically selected material properties. The results show that the effect of the thickness, the mechanical properties and the material orientation of the interfacial zone on the strain energy release rate could be very significant. An intersting and a rather useful result obtained from the collinear crack solutions is that the strain energy release rates for multiple cracks in bonded orthotropic materials with or without an interfacial layer may predicted by using the results obtained for an isotropic homogeneous plane provided the normalisation factors are selected properly.

Book Fracture Mechanics for an Interfacial Crack Between Adhesively Bonded Dissimilar Materials

Download or read book Fracture Mechanics for an Interfacial Crack Between Adhesively Bonded Dissimilar Materials written by Charles Yi-jer Wang and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A plate composed of two dissimilar materials, bonded together along a straight line with a center crack was studied. This problem represents an idealization of an adhesive joint or a composite structure with an interfacial flaw or crack caused by faulty joining techniques. Common examples are imperfections, voids, or broken bonds on the composite interface. Combined with the finite element technique, the strain energy method and the J-integral method have been extended to a bi-material problem to calculate the value of the strain energy rate. A general relationship between strain energy rate and total stress intensity factor is then derived using the crack closure technique. The ratio of stress intensity factors was also examined. The numerical analysis concentrated on three categories of composite materials with moduli ratio 1, 20, and 120. These results provide a complete crack-tip stress analysis and are needed for the study and understanding of the fracture mechanics of bi-material problems. Lastly, the compliance method was employed for experimental verification of the numerical results. An aluminum alloy-epoxy bi-material plate with a moduli ratio equal to 20 was examined. This study has yielded useful results in terms of the analytical tools to guide further experimental fracture studies of adhesive joints and composite materials. (Author, modified-PL).

Book Quasibrittle Fracture Mechanics and Size Effect

Download or read book Quasibrittle Fracture Mechanics and Size Effect written by Jia-Liang Le and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2021-11-19 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many modern engineering structures are composed of brittle heterogenous, or quasibrittle, materials. These include concrete, composites, tough ceramics, rocks, cold asphalt mixtures, and many brittle materials at the microscale. Understanding the failure behavior of these materials is of paramount importance for improving the resilience and sustainability of various engineering structures including civil infrastructure, aircraft, ships, military armors, and microelectronic devices. Designed for graduate and upper-level undergraduate university courses, this textbook provides a comprehensive treatment of quasibrittle fracture mechanics. It includes a concise but rigorous examination of linear elastic fracture mechanics, which is the foundation of all fracture mechanics. It also covers the fundamental concepts of nonlinear fracture mechanics, and introduces more advanced concepts such as triaxial stress state in the fracture process zone, nonlocal continuum models, and discrete computational models. Finally, the book features extensive discussion of the various practical applications of quasibrittle fracture mechanics across different structures and engineering disciplines, and throughout includes exercises and problems for students to test their understanding.

Book Advances in Mechanics and Mathematics

Download or read book Advances in Mechanics and Mathematics written by David Yang Gao and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-12-01 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As any human activity needs goals, mathematical research needs problems -David Hilbert Mechanics is the paradise of mathematical sciences -Leonardo da Vinci Mechanics and mathematics have been complementary partners since Newton's time and the history of science shows much evidence of the ben eficial influence of these disciplines on each other. Driven by increasingly elaborate modern technological applications the symbiotic relationship between mathematics and mechanics is continually growing. However, the increasingly large number of specialist journals has generated a du ality gap between the two partners, and this gap is growing wider. Advances in Mechanics and Mathematics (AMMA) is intended to bridge the gap by providing multi-disciplinary publications which fall into the two following complementary categories: 1. An annual book dedicated to the latest developments in mechanics and mathematics; 2. Monographs, advanced textbooks, handbooks, edited vol umes and selected conference proceedings. The AMMA annual book publishes invited and contributed compre hensive reviews, research and survey articles within the broad area of modern mechanics and applied mathematics. Mechanics is understood here in the most general sense of the word, and is taken to embrace relevant physical and biological phenomena involving electromagnetic, thermal and quantum effects and biomechanics, as well as general dy namical systems. Especially encouraged are articles on mathematical and computational models and methods based on mechanics and their interactions with other fields. All contributions will be reviewed so as to guarantee the highest possible scientific standards.
