Book Fracture Control Procedures for Aircraft Structural Integrity

Download or read book Fracture Control Procedures for Aircraft Structural Integrity written by Howard A. Wood and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report reviews the application of applied fracture mechanics in the design, analysis and qualification of aircraft structural systems. Recent service experiences are cited. Current trends in high strength materials application are reviewed with particular emphasis on the manner in which fracture toughness and structural efficiency may affect the material selection process. General fracture control procedures are reviewed in depth with specific reference to the impact of inspectability, structural arrangement and material on proposed analysis requirements for safe crack growth. The relative impact on allowable design stress is indicated by example. Design criteria, material and analysis requirements for implementation of fracture control procedures are reviewed together with limitation in current available data techniques. A summary of items which require further study and attention is presented.

Book Aircraft Sustainment and Repair

Download or read book Aircraft Sustainment and Repair written by Rhys Jones and published by Butterworth-Heinemann. This book was released on 2017-12-05 with total page 972 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aircraft Sustainment and Repair is a one-stop-shop for practitioners and researchers in the field of aircraft sustainment, adhesively bonded aircraft joints, bonded composites repairs, and the application of cold spray to military and civil aircraft. Outlining the state-of-the-art in aircraft sustainment, this book covers the use of quantitative fractography to determine the in-service crack length versus flight hours curve, the effect of intergranular cracking on structural integrity and the structural significance of corrosion. The book additionally illustrates the potential of composite repairs and SPD applications to metallic airframes. Covers corrosion damage assessment and management in aircraft structures Includes a key chapter on U.S. developments in the emerging field of supersonic particle deposition (SPD) Shows how to design and assess the potential benefits of both bonded composite repairs and SPD repairs to metallic aircraft structures to meet the damage tolerance requirements inherent in FAA ac 20-107b and the U.S. Joint Services

Book Virtual Principles in Aircraft Structures

Download or read book Virtual Principles in Aircraft Structures written by M. Gatewood and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 715 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The basic partial differential equations for the stresses and displacements in clas sical three dimensional elasticity theory can be set up in three ways: (1) to solve for the displacements first and then the stresses; (2) to solve for the stresses first and then the displacements; and (3) to solve for both stresses and displacements simultaneously. These three methods are identified in the literature as (1) the displacement method, (2) the stress or force method, and (3) the combined or mixed method. Closed form solutions of the partial differential equations with their complicated boundary conditions for any of these three methods have been obtained only in special cases. In order to obtain solutions, various special methods have been developed to determine the stresses and displacements in structures. The equations have been reduced to two and one dimensional forms for plates, beams, and trusses. By neglecting the local effects at the edges and ends, satisfactory solutions can be obtained for many case~. The procedures for reducing the three dimensional equations to two and one dimensional equations are described in Chapter 1, Volume 1, where the various approximations are pointed out.

Book Fatigue and Fracture Mechanics of High Risk Parts

Download or read book Fatigue and Fracture Mechanics of High Risk Parts written by Bahram Farahmand and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the preliminary stage of designing new structural hardware that must perform a given mission in a fluctuating load environment, there are several factors the designers should consider. Trade studies for different design configurations should be performed and, based on strength and weight considerations, among others, an optimum configuration selected. The selected design must be able to withstand the environment in question without failure. Therefore, a comprehen sive structural analysis that consists of static, dynamic, fatigue, and fracture is necessary to ensure the integrity of the structure. During the past few decades, fracture mechanics has become a necessary discipline for the solution of many structural problems. These problems include the prevention of failures resulting from preexisting cracks in the parent material, welds or that develop under cyclic loading environment during the life of the structure. The importance of fatigue and fracture in nuclear, pressure vessel, aircraft, and aerospace structural hardware cannot be overemphasized where safety is of utmost concern. This book is written for the designer and strength analyst, as well as for the material and process engineer who is concerned with the integrity of the structural hardware under load-varying environments in which fatigue and frac ture must be given special attention. The book is a result of years of both acade mic and industrial experiences that the principal author and co-authors have accumulated through their work with aircraft and aerospace structures.

Book Bonded Repair of Aircraft Structures

Download or read book Bonded Repair of Aircraft Structures written by A. Baker and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1988-05-31 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The conventional approach to through-life-support for aircraft structures can be divided into the following phases: (i) detection of defects, (ii) diagnosis of their nature and significance, (iii) forecasting future behaviour-prognosis, and (iv) pre scription and implementation of remedial measures including repairs. Considerable scientific effort has been devoted to developing the science and technology base for the first three phases. Of particular note is the development of fracture mechanics as a major analytical tool for metals, for predicting residual strength in the presence of cracks ( damage tolerance) and rate of crack propagation under service loading. Intensive effort is currently being devoted to developing similar approaches for fibre composite structures, particularly to assess damage tolerance and durability in the presence of delamination damage. Until recently there has been no major attempt to develop a science and tech nology base for the last phase, particularly with respect to the development of repairs. Approaches are required which will allow assessment of the type and magnitude of defects amenable to repair and the influence of the repair on the stress intensity factor (or some related parameter). Approaches are also required for the development and design of optimum repairs and for assessment of their durability.
