Book Dielectric Relaxation in Biological Systems

Download or read book Dielectric Relaxation in Biological Systems written by Valerica Raicu and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2015-07-23 with total page 451 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of dielectric properties of biological systems and their components is important not only for fundamental scientific knowledge but also for its applications in medicine, biology, and biotechnology. The associated technique - known as dielectric spectroscopy - has enabled researchers to quickly and accurately acquire time- or frequency-spectra of permittivity and conductivity and permitted the derivation and testing of realistic electrical models for cells and organelles. This text covers the theoretical basis and practical aspects of the study of dielectric properties of biological systems, such as water, electrolyte and polyelectrolytes, solutions of biological macromolecules, cells suspensions and cellular systems. The authors' combined efforts provide a comprehensive and cohesive book that takes advantage of the expertise of multiple scientists involved in cutting-edge research in the specific sub-fields of bio-dielectric spectroscopy while maintaining its self-consistency through numerous discussions. The first six chapters cover theoretical, methodological and experimental aspects of relaxation and dispersion in biological dielectrics at molecular, cellular and cellular aggregate level. Applications are presented in the following chapters which are organized in the order of increased complexity, beginning with pure water, amino acids and proteins, continuing with vesicles and simple cells such as erythrocytes, and then with more complex, organelle-containing cells and cellular aggregates. Due to its broad coverage, the text could be used as a reference book by researchers, and as a textbook for upper-level undergraduate classes and graduate classes in (bio) physics, medical physics, quantitative biology, and engineering.

Book Fractional Kinetics in Solids

Download or read book Fractional Kinetics in Solids written by Vladimir Uchaikin and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2013 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, a novel approach using equations with derivatives of fractional orders is applied to describe anomalous transport and relaxation in disordered semiconductors, dielectrics and quantum dot systems. A relationship between the self-similarity of transport, the Levy stable limiting distributions and the kinetic equations with fractional derivatives is established. It is shown that unlike the well-known Scher-Montroll and Arkhipov-Rudenko models, which are in a sense alternatives to the normal transport model, fractional differential equations provide a unified mathematical framework for describing normal and dispersive transport. The fractional differential formalism allows the equations of bipolar transport to be written down and transport in distributed dispersion systems to be described.

Book On the Fractal Language of Medicine

Download or read book On the Fractal Language of Medicine written by Bruce J. West and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2024-07-17 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On the Fractal Language of Medicine bridges a very clear gap among the knowledge gained over the last 20 years in the physical and life sciences on network theory, organ synchronicity and communication, the understanding of fractal signatures in health and disease and the importance of fractional calculus in integrating these concepts. The authors opine that the field of medicine has not appreciated this hard-won knowledge and has suffered greatly as a result. This book addresses this perceived deficiency by introducing medical researchers, clinicians, residents, first-year medical students and members of allied fields to the work of the so-called hard sciences. It seeks to facilitate effective communication between empiricists and theorists by making interdisciplinary efforts to explain complex mathematical concepts to physicians and, equally important, to elucidate complex medical concepts to physicists or mathematicians. This book will be of great interest to medical students, professionals and academics, as well as students and researchers of applied mathematics, especially those interested in fractional calculus and fractals.

Book Dynamics of Glassy Crystalline and Liquid Ionic Conductors

Download or read book Dynamics of Glassy Crystalline and Liquid Ionic Conductors written by Junko Habasaki and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-10-19 with total page 614 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses the physics of the dynamics of ions in various ionically conducting materials, and applications including electrical energy generation and storage. The experimental techniques for measurements and characterization, molecular dynamics simulations, the theories of ion dynamics, and applications are all addressed by the authors, who are experts in their fields. The experimental techniques of measurement and characterization of dynamics of ions in glassy, crystalline, and liquid ionic conductors are introduced with the dual purpose of introducing the reader to the experimental activities of the field, and preparing the reader to understand the physical quantities derived from experiments. These experimental techniques include calorimetry, conductivity relaxation, nuclear magnetic resonance, light scattering, neutron scattering, and others. Methods of molecular dynamics simulations are introduced to teach the reader to utilize the technique for practical applications to specific problems. The results elucidate the dynamics of ions on some issues that are not accessible by experiments. The properties of ion dynamics in glassy, crystalline and liquid ionic conductors brought forth by experiments and simulations are shown to be universal, i.e. independent of physical and chemical structure of the ionic conductor as long as ion-ion interaction is the dominant factor. Moreover these universal properties of ion dynamics are shown to be isomorphic to other complex interacting systems including the large class of glass-forming materials with or without ionic conductivity.By covering the basic concepts, theories/models, experimental techniques and data, molecular dynamics simulations, and relating them together, Dynamics of Glassy, Crystalline and Liquid Ionic Conductors will be of great interest to many in basic and applied research areas from the broad and diverse communities of condensed matter physicists, chemists, materials scientists and engineers. The book also provides the fundamentals for an introduction to the field and it is written in such a way that can be used for teaching courses either at the undergraduate or graduate level in academic institutions.

Book Recent Advances in Broadband Dielectric Spectroscopy

Download or read book Recent Advances in Broadband Dielectric Spectroscopy written by Yuri P. Kalmykov and published by Springer. This book was released on 2012-10-19 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume considers experimental and theoretical dielectric studies of the structure and dynamics of complex systems. Complex systems constitute an almost universal class of materials including associated liquids, polymers, biomolecules, colloids, porous materials, doped ferroelectric crystals, nanomaterials, etc. These systems are characterized by a new "mesoscopic" length scale, intermediate between molecular and macroscopic. The mesoscopic structures of complex systems typically arise from fluctuations or competing interactions and exhibit a rich variety of static and dynamic behaviour. This growing field is interdisciplinary; it complements solid state and statistical physics, and overlaps considerably with chemistry, chemical engineering, materials science, and biology. A common theme in complex systems is that while such materials are disordered on the molecular scale and homogeneous on the macroscopic scale, they usually possess a certain degree of order on an intermediate, or mesoscopic, scale due to the delicate balance of interaction and thermal effects. In the present Volume it is shown how the dielectric spectroscopy studies of complex systems can be applied to determine both their structures and dynamics.
