Book Small Angle X Ray and Neutron Scattering with Applications to Geomaterials

Download or read book Small Angle X Ray and Neutron Scattering with Applications to Geomaterials written by Yixin Zhao and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2023-06-02 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Small Angle X-Ray and Neutron Scattering with Applications to Geomaterials provides techniques for the analysis of geomaterials, which is of great significance for humans because geomaterials are related to earthquake, resource development, underground spaces, carbon dioxide storage, and more. The book introduces the fundamental theory of small angle X-ray and neutron scattering and covers pore accessibility characterization for natural rocks from four aspects, including quantitative evaluation of pore structure heterogeneity and anisotropy, quantification of pore modification in coals due to pulverization, estimation and modeling of coal pore accessibility, and nanoscale coal deformation and alteration of porosity and pore orientation under uniaxial compression. Finally, interactions between pore structures and fluid behaviors in geomaterials are introduced, along with the connections between small-angle scattering and other techniques (NMR cytophotometry, Transmission Electron Microscopy and synchrotron radiation SAXS and nano-CT) described. Covers both theory and applications of small angle X-ray and neutron scattering as related to geomaterials Provides context for using the techniques described in the book in connection with other well-known techniques Includes analysis methods of interactions between pore structures and fluid behaviors in geomaterials

Book Pattern Formation in Diffusion limited Crystal Growth

Download or read book Pattern Formation in Diffusion limited Crystal Growth written by Klaus Kassner and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1996 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reviews the current state of the theory of pattern formation by a liquid-solid interface during crystal growth. It gives a pedagogical introduction to the subject, including experimental results, mathematical modeling and linear stability analysis. After highlighting the success of the theory in resolving the selection problem of dendritic growth, various new directions of research are presented in which progress has been made recently. These are the formation of nondendritic seaweed-like structures, growth of lamellar eutectics and rapid solidification. The interplay between analytic methods on the one hand (scaling arguments, asymptotic analysis, similarity equation, Sivashinsky singular expansion) and numerical calculations on the other (Newton method, dynamical schemes) is emphasized.

Book NEITHER MIND NOR BRAIN

Download or read book NEITHER MIND NOR BRAIN written by CJ ROY and published by CJ Roy. This book was released on 2020-12-12 with total page 621 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an interdisciplinary theoretical effort to explain the mind-body problem. Conscious mind is the hard problem to be explained and is the utmost existential question for any scientific mind. Neither a reductionist identity theory nor a commonsense-religious dualism can answer the problem. Human cognitive system can have a natural explanation rather than a religious description. To reduce the mind as what the brain does is too premature and to separate the mind and brain as two independent realities is too trivial. The hypothesis of the book identifies the conscious mind with the emergent functionality of the human brain. And, this is definitely an approximate guess. This informed guess is a challenge to many previously established theories and is an invitation for further research. It demystifies the age old homunculus mind and does not explains it away. To elaborate the theme, the author has incorporated themes such as complex system dynamics, evolution, cosmology, thermodynamics, information and emergence. The philosophical discussion on the first three chapters govern as an intuitive background for the theoretical development in further chapters. It affirms that the mind and brain are neither two dichotomized substances nor are they one and same substance. Chapters from four to eight deal with various themes from natural science with respect to the theme of mind-brain. they involve system dynamics, cosmology, thermodynamics, evolutionary theory and information model. Last chapter assimilates the discussions of previous chapters to propose the key hypothesis of the book viz. mind-brain is the emergent functionality of the human brain which is the matter-energy-information complex system. The universe, which itself is a matter-energy-information system, at least in one occasion, becomes conscious of itself through humans.

Book excerpt: HORIZON: GREG JOHNS, SCULPTURES 1970-2002 traces the ideas and career of the Adelaide-based artist from his first commission in the late 1970s through to participation in recent exhibitions in New York and Bahrain. The story is told by noted Adelaide writer and art critic, John Neylon of the Art Gallery of South Australia. His text examines all aspects of the artist's development as a creator of large-scale public sculptures and explains the philosophy that has shaped the work. The reader is led through a rich array of ideas and images relating to the use of sculptural form as a language in which the works serve as metaphors for the human psyche and the natural/cosmic systems that define our world. A number of key sculptures are examined in detail - as are issues surrounding public art and its reception within the community. The processes of commissioning, creating and installing the sculptures are described along with intimate glimpses into the creation of each work as it proceeds from the artist's studio, to the engineering works where it is fabricated, and then on to its intended site.

Book First Steps in Random Walks

Download or read book First Steps in Random Walks written by J. Klafter and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2011-08-18 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The name "random walk" for a problem of a displacement of a point in a sequence of independent random steps was coined by Karl Pearson in 1905 in a question posed to readers of "Nature". The same year, a similar problem was formulated by Albert Einstein in one of his Annus Mirabilis works. Even earlier such a problem was posed by Louis Bachelier in his thesis devoted to the theory of financial speculations in 1900. Nowadays the theory of random walks has proved useful in physics and chemistry (diffusion, reactions, mixing flows), economics, biology (from animal spread to motion of subcellular structures) and in many other disciplines. The random walk approach serves not only as a model of simple diffusion but of many complex sub- and super-diffusive transport processes as well. This book discusses the main variants of random walks and gives the most important mathematical tools for their theoretical description.
